Minetha Shrine — Water Redirection Puzzle

Location: Lanayru Region, near Zora's Domain Coordinates: 2647, 0314, 0102 Abilities Required: Ultrahand Type: Puzzle Shrine — water gate mechanics Difficulty: Medium

Overview

Minetha Shrine is a water gate redirection shrine — three connected rooms where you control the flow of water by opening and closing valves and repositioning divider blocks. Water flowing into the correct basin activates pressure plates that open doors. The final room requires water reaching two basins simultaneously — the most complex configuration in the shrine. Completing Minetha gives excellent intuition for all water-pressure and water-gate puzzles in Lanayru, including the Water Temple's lock mechanisms.

Location Details

The shrine is in the Lanayru lowlands east of Zora's Domain, near the East Reservoir waterway. From Zora's Domain, head east and descend the canyon toward the main river — the shrine marker appears at coordinates 2647, 0314. The area has Lizalfos near the water; either bypass or clear them before entering. No special protection needed for the approach.

Preparation

  • Ultrahand required for all gate and divider manipulation
  • No combat inside — no armor preparation needed
  • Zora Armor not required (water inside is shallow)

Detailed Walkthrough

Understanding the System

The shrine has one water source (top of the room) flowing through a network of channels. Gates are vertical barriers you open or close with Ultrahand. Pressure plates activate when water fills their basin. Each door requires its corresponding pressure plate to be active (filled with water).

Key rules:

  • Water always flows to the lowest available point
  • Closing one gate redirects flow to other open channels
  • Only the specified pressure plate for each door activates that door
  • The final door requires both plates active simultaneously

Room 1 — Left Channel Gate

  1. Enter Room 1. A water source at the top feeds into two possible channels — Left and Right. A gate blocks the Left channel.
  2. Use Ultrahand to grab the left gate and pull it open (slide it horizontally or vertically to clear the channel).
  3. Water flows left, filling the Left Basin. The pressure plate in the Left Basin activates (glows).
  4. Door 1 opens — proceed to Room 2.
  5. Leave the Left Gate open. The Left channel must remain active.

Room 2 — Sequential Gate Switching

  1. Room 2 has two more channels: Center and Right. Gate 2 blocks the Center channel, Gate 3 blocks the Right.
  2. You need to fill the Center Basin (not the Right, not the Left — that's already done).
  3. Open Gate 2 (Center channel) with Ultrahand.
  4. Water splits from the Source: Left channel (already open) and Center channel (now open) both receive flow.
  5. Center Basin fills → Pressure Plate B activatesDoor 2 opens.

Chest access: Before proceeding to Room 3, look right — Gate 3 (Right channel) has a small alcove behind it when closed. The alcove contains a Treasure Chest (common contents: Strong Construct Bow, Zonaite material, or Opal gem). To access: use Ultrahand to open Gate 3 briefly, allowing water to drain from the side, then quickly enter the alcove. The water rushing out won't impede you.

Room 3 — Simultaneous Dual Activation

  1. Room 3 has two pressure plates (Plate C and Plate D) that must both be active at the same time to open Door 3.
  2. Two separate channels exist. A movable divider block sits at the water junction.
  3. Current state: Water flows entirely to one side. Only one plate is active.
  4. Use Ultrahand to grab the divider block and position it at the center of the water junction — splitting the flow equally between both channels.
  5. When positioned correctly, water flows to both basins simultaneously → both pressure plates activate (both glow) → Door 3 opens permanently.
  6. Even if the flow isn't perfectly equal, both plates activate as long as they receive some water — don't over-optimize placement.

Altar Chamber

Walk through Door 3 into the single-room altar chamber. Interact with Rauru's statue for your Light of Blessing.

Chest Location

The treasure chest is in Room 2's right alcove — open Gate 3 (Right channel) briefly and enter the now-accessible alcove behind it. Collect before proceeding to Room 3.

Tips

  • Water ripple tracking: Follow the water's ripple pattern downstream from the source — ripples show exactly where flow is currently going, saving time on trial-and-error gate switching.
  • Divider precision: In Room 3, the divider block doesn't need exact center placement — any position that allows some water to each basin satisfies both pressure plates. Rough centering is sufficient.
  • Gate state persistence: Gates you open stay open when you move to the next room. Be intentional about which gates are open as you progress — you can't close a gate from a different room without going back.
  • Cryonis alternative (if unlocked): Cryonis ice blocks can temporarily dam a channel without moving gates — useful for redirecting flow without Ultrahand if you have the ability from a previous game.
  • Water Temple preview: Minetha's water gate mechanics mirror the Water Temple's lock-wheel puzzles. The core skill — managing multiple water flows simultaneously — applies directly to the temple.

Nearby Points of Interest

  • Zora's Domain — west; main city of the Zora with the Zora Set shop, inn, and Sidon's questline
  • Lanayru Great Spring — the main water source for all of Lanayru; connected to the East Reservoir visible from the shrine's surface location
  • East Reservoir Lake — east; fishing spot with Voltfin Trout for shock-resistance meals
  • Mipha's memorial — northwest in Zora's Domain; part of the region's backstory for Calamity-era events
  • Lanayru Sky Island — above Zora's Domain; location of the Water Temple entrance
