Polorus Shrine — Flight Above the Flames

Location: Eldin region, Death Mountain north slope Coordinates: (2212, 3014, 0412) Type: Puzzle Shrine Difficulty: Medium

Overview

Polorus Shrine sits at high elevation on Death Mountain's north slope — a dramatic location with volcanic vents, lava flows visible in the distance, and strong thermal updrafts rising from the heated volcanic rock below. The shrine uses these thermal updraft mechanics alongside Zonai Fan devices to create flight-based puzzles. Link must construct and ride Zonai gliders or fan-driven vehicles upward through the updraft columns, navigating obstacles and targeting elevated platforms. The shrine is a natural continuation of TotK's sky and flight mechanics applied to a volcanic context.

Preparation

  • Flamebreaker Armor — mandatory for Death Mountain approach; the north slope has intense heat
  • Zonai Fans — provided inside the shrine, but bring extras from capsule dispensers if you have them
  • Paraglider — used for controlled descent between fan-powered ascent sections
  • Energizing Elixirs for stamina during any extended gliding sequences
  • Full hearts — the Eldin exterior has fire jets and enemy camps

Walkthrough

Step 1: Thermal Glider Construction

The first room has a wide gap with a thermal updraft rising from a vent in the floor. A rectangular glider board and two Zonai Fans are on the material shelf. Attach both Fans to the board's underside, pointing downward. Ride the glider over the thermal vent — the updraft and Fan thrust combine to lift the board high enough to reach the far ledge. The thermal vent's invisible column rises 15 meters — time your crossing through the column's center for maximum lift.

Step 2: Obstacle Navigation

The second section has two thermal columns with a stone barrier between them. Build a Fan-glider as in Step 1, ride the first column upward, maneuver around the barrier at peak altitude, then catch the second column for sustained flight. The barrier is 6 meters wide — at the first column's peak height, you can paraglide over it before the thermal lift fades.

Step 3: Targeted Landing Platform

The third room has a small elevated landing platform — 10 meters up and offset to the right of the main thermal column. A single Fan attached to the left side of the glider provides lateral thrust while the thermal lifts upward. The combined effect: the glider rises and drifts right, intersecting the platform. Position the Fan carefully — too far left and you overshoot, too far right and you miss the column's center.

Step 4: Lava Crossing

The final section has a lava flow crossing — no safe ground, only a lava lake between Link and the altar. Build a Fan-glider powerful enough to cross the full width (two Fans for this distance). Ride the thermals from the lava lake's edge — hot air rises from the lava surface, providing extra lift. Cross without dropping into the lava. The distance is approximately 20 meters — double-fan gliders cover it with altitude to spare.

Step 5: Altar

The altar is on the far side of the lava lake. Collect your Light of Blessing. The chest contains Zonai Fan Capsule x2 — additional fan devices for external construction projects.

Chest Summary

| # | Contents | Location | |---|----------|----------| | 1 | Zonai Fan Capsule x2 | Step 5 — on the altar platform after the lava lake crossing. |

Tips

  • Thermal columns are invisible but rise directly above vents — the vent's heat shimmer effect identifies column centers
  • Double-fan gliders have twice the thrust of single-fan — always use both fans for lava crossings
  • The lateral fan in Step 3: attach it perpendicular to the glider's direction of travel for pure sideways drift
  • Death Mountain's thermals are stronger at higher elevation — gain as much altitude as possible before horizontal maneuvering
  • Flamebreaker at Level 2+ provides fire immunity — removes the urgency from potential lava proximity incidents during glider construction
