Uthabek Shrine — Recall in the Desert Heat

Location: Gerudo Desert, northern region near Kara Kara Bazaar Coordinates: (-3028, -2086, 0054) Type: Puzzle Shrine Difficulty: Easy

Overview

Uthabek Shrine is a Recall ability tutorial in the Gerudo region — one of TotK's foundational skill shrines that demonstrates how reversing an object's trajectory in time solves puzzles that appear impossible at first glance. The shrine is set against the Gerudo Desert's northern edge, where temperatures are fierce but the terrain is relatively accessible. For players who haven't fully explored Recall's potential, Uthabek is the shrine that opens their eyes to how powerful time-reversal is in TotK's puzzle ecosystem. All four rooms present a variation on the same theme: something moves, you miss it, Recall brings it back.

Preparation

  • Recall ability — must be unlocked from a Sky Island before this shrine is accessible
  • No weapons, armor, or food resources needed inside — purely a puzzle shrine
  • Desert Voe Set or chilly elixirs for the exterior desert approach
  • Calm, observational mindset — watch each object's movement pattern before applying Recall
  • No time pressure inside the shrine — take as long as needed to understand each mechanism

Walkthrough

Step 1: The Departing Platform

The first room has a stone platform that launches from a catapult on the north side, flies across a gap, and lands on the far side before stopping. The gap is too wide to jump. Wait for the platform to complete its full arc and land, then activate Recall on it — the platform reverses its path, flying back across the gap (now in reverse). Jump onto it while it's mid-air during the recall arc and ride it to the far platform. Step off when it arrives at the far side.

Step 2: The Falling Rock Bridge

The second room has a series of stone slabs that fall from overhead onto pins — creating stepping stones that are only present for a few seconds after falling. Recall each slab after it falls to restore it to its original elevated position, then use the suspended slabs as a temporary bridge. Three slabs must be Recalled in sequence: left, center, right. Cross quickly while all three are suspended — they resume falling after 6-8 seconds each.

Step 3: The Fired Arrow Problem

The third room has a giant Zonai-powered arrow launcher that fires arrows across a chamber — the arrows embed in a distant target and open a gate, but the gate closes when the arrows stop. The launcher has limited ammo and stops after 5 shots. Once it has stopped, Recall any embedded arrow — it reverses its flight path back to the launcher, reloads it, and triggers another cycle. The gate reopens. Cross during the active firing cycle.

Step 4: The Retreating Wall

The final room has a moving wall that pushes Link backward as it advances. The wall cannot be stopped by conventional means. Wait for the wall to fully advance (pushing Link to the back of the room), then apply Recall to the wall itself — it reverses its advance and retreats, clearing a path to the altar door. Walk through while the wall is mid-retreat.

Step 5: Altar

Proceed through the altar door. Collect your Light of Blessing. The chest in the corner contains Recall Insight — a lore tablet describing the ancient Zonai's relationship with time and how Recall was rediscovered by Link through his bond with Rauru.

Tips

  • Recall persists for a set duration based on how long you observed the object's movement — it won't reverse longer than the object moved
  • The platform in Step 1 must be Recalled while it's at rest on the far side — it must complete its arc first
  • In Step 2, Recalling all three slabs before crossing is the most efficient approach — brief coordination before execution
  • Recall on the arrow in Step 3 works on any embedded arrow, not just the most recent one
  • The retreating wall in Step 4: apply Recall the moment the wall finishes its advance for maximum retreat distance
