Tarrey Town Extended Guide — Building the Town & All Services
Tarrey Town Extended Guide — Building and Finishing the Town
Tarrey Town is TotK's signature side quest chain — rebuilding a community from scratch by recruiting residents from across Hyrule. It started in Breath of the Wild with Hudson, and TotK continues the story. Completing the questline unlocks unique services, rare gear, and one of the game's most touching story moments. This guide walks through every step and every reward.
Location and Access
Tarrey Town location: Akkala Highlands, northeast Hyrule — on a lake island (Lake Akkala).
How to reach:
- Hoverbike across Lake Akkala to the island
- Or use the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab area → travel south to the lake
Questline start: Speak to Hudson at the construction site (or Rhondson in the partially-built town if you're mid-quest from a previous save).
The Building Questline
Phase 1 — Foundation
Quest: "A New Lease on Life" or equivalent (quest names may vary slightly)
Task: Help Hudson recruit builders. Speak to NPCs with names ending in "-son" across Hyrule.
Recruitable characters: Various named NPCs found at stables, towns, and along roads. Their names contain "son" — the game usually hints at their general region.
Rewards per recruit: Small progress on the town; new building section appears
Phase 2 — Expansion
Task: More recruits, more building. New shop types unlock as population grows.
Key recruit locations:
- Stable workers (multiple stables have eligible NPCs)
- Hateno Village (Hateno-area "son" NPCs)
- Lookout Landing area workers
Tracking: The quest log tracks how many recruits you've found vs. needed.
Phase 3 — Wedding
Quest: Hudson's marriage ceremony — Rhondson and Hudson's wedding at Tarrey Town
Trigger: After collecting all required recruits, speak to Hudson
The ceremony: A story scene plays — one of the most emotional moments in the side quest catalog
Reward: The town is now fully operational with all services
Tarrey Town Services (Fully Built)
General Store
Sells:
- Common cooking ingredients (difficult to find elsewhere)
- Basic arrows
- Ore materials at standard prices
Ore and Materials Shop
Most valuable service: Sells rare ore at fixed prices.
| Item | Approximate Price | |------|-----------------| | Flint | Low | | Amber | Low | | Opal | Moderate | | Topaz | High | | Ruby | High | | Sapphire | High | | Diamond | Very High |
Buy vs. farm: For early game players who need gems for armor upgrades, the Tarrey Town ore shop is more time-efficient than farming.
Armor Shop
Sells specific armor pieces not easily found elsewhere:
- Radiant Armor set pieces (or access to them)
- Other mid-game armor options
Inn
Standard inn service — sleep to advance time, restore health.
Blacksmith (Pelison's Shop)
Unique service: Pelison can remove Fuse materials from your weapons without breaking either component.
- Cost: 20 rupees per removal
- The Fuse material is lost (not returned)
- The base weapon is kept
- Essential for re-fusing weapons when you have a better material but still want the base weapon
Why this matters: You might have fused a Lizalfos Tail to a Royal Sword before finding a Lynel Blade. Pelison lets you unfuse the Tail and re-fuse with the Lynel Blade — preserving the Royal Sword.
Gondola (Ferry Service)
After the town is built, a gondola service operates across Lake Akkala — free transportation between the island and the shore.
Hidden Quests and Secrets
Post-Wedding Follow-Up
After the wedding, Hudson and Rhondson have additional dialogue that reveals their future plans. Speak to them regularly — new dialogue appears after major story milestones.
Town Expansion Chests
As the town expands, chests appear in newly built sections:
- Check every new building as it's constructed
- Some chests contain rare weapons or materials tied to the recruits' backgrounds
Malanya Nearby
Malanya (the Horse God) is accessible near Tarrey Town's region. If your horse dies, visit Malanya for revival (costs materials + rupees).
Tips for Efficient Completion
Do this mid-game: Tarrey Town becomes much easier to complete once you have a hoverbike and know the major town locations. Early game completion is possible but slower.
Recruit in batches: Plan a route hitting multiple recruit locations in one loop rather than individual trips. The quest doesn't expire — take your time.
Visit after each recruitment: Each recruit you bring to Tarrey Town adds a new building section. Visiting after each one shows progress and sometimes triggers new chests or dialogue.
The ore shop is worth it: Even if you farm gems effectively, the Tarrey Town ore shop is faster for specific quantities needed for armor upgrades (Great Fairy upgrades often need specific gem types).
Quick Tips
- Pelison is the only Fuse-removal service — this is Tarrey Town's most practically valuable service. If you're late-game with several weapons you want to re-fuse with better materials, Pelison makes it possible without losing the base weapon.
- "-son" names are scattered widely — don't expect to find recruits in one region. The questline sends you across all of Hyrule. Use the stable network to hit multiple regions efficiently.
- Ore shop for armor upgrades — Great Fairies require specific gems for star upgrades. Rather than mining for specific gem types, check Tarrey Town's ore shop to fill the gap faster.
- Wedding is worth watching — don't skip the ceremony cutscene. It's one of TotK's best side story moments, especially if you played BotW and remember Hudson starting the town from scratch.
- Post-wedding Rhondson and Hudson dialogue — after the wedding, both NPCs have ongoing dialogue that hints at future town expansion and their relationship. Worth checking in periodically.
