Temple Tips Guide — All 5 Temples & Boss Strategies

TotK's 5 main temples replace BotW's Divine Beasts — each is a full dungeon with a unique mechanic and mini-boss gauntlet ending in a main boss. This guide covers the key puzzle approaches and boss strategies for all 5, without spoiling the full walkthrough.

Recommended Completion Order

| Order | Temple | Sage Unlocked | Priority | |-------|--------|--------------|---------| | 1 | Wind Temple (Rito) | Tulin — Wind Gust | Highest — Tulin unlocks sky traversal | | 2 | Fire Temple (Goron) | Yunobo — Rock Charge | Eldin Zonaite + battery access | | 3 | Water Temple (Zora) | Sidon — Water Shield | Zora Armor + eastern exploration | | 4 | Lightning Temple (Gerudo) | Riju — Lightning | Gerudo region access | | 5 | Spirit Temple (Depths) | Mineru — Construct | Post-game equivalent content |

Why Wind first: Tulin's Gust is used in almost every sky island approach and makes Paraglider traversal dramatically more efficient. Getting Tulin early transforms how you explore the entire sky layer.

Wind Temple (Rito Village / Hebra)

Access: Complete Tulin's introduction quests at Rito Village → find the massive storm above Hebra Mountains → ascend into it

Core mechanic: The temple is inside a massive tornado. Tulin's Gust ability (press Y while gliding) is the primary tool — use it to reach platforms, blow obstacles, and solve wind-based puzzles.

Puzzle approach:

  • All 5 sub-mechanisms require reaching elevated positions using Tulin + Paraglider
  • Work counterclockwise around the temple's central floor
  • Each mechanism: find the locked mechanism → clear surrounding ice → use Tulin to reach upper platform → interact

Preparation:

  • Cold resistance required (2 wheels with Snowquill at ★★, or strong Spicy food)
  • 2+ stamina wheels for extended gliding in the temple interior
  • Fire weapons to melt ice blocks quickly

Boss: Colgera (Ice Phantom)

Phase 1: Colgera orbits the arena as three stacked ring sections. Shoot the glowing eyes on each ring as they pass overhead.

  • Bullet time (jump + ZR) for precision shots
  • Keese Eyeball arrows for homing targeting
  • Must hit all eyes on a ring section in one pass before they reset

Phase 2: Colgera dives from above — fly upward with Tulin's Gust to meet it and shoot eyes while falling past it.

Best approach: Paraglider + Tulin Gust + Keese Eyeball Fused arrows = easiest run. You'll be mostly aerial for the entire fight.

Fire Temple (Goron City / Eldin)

Access: Complete the Goron City questline → follow Yunobo's trail → enter the Fire Temple mine entrance

Core mechanic: Yunobo can be commanded to roll like a ball — charging through cracked walls and activating large wheel mechanisms. The temple is a multi-floor mine with gongs that must be activated.

Preparation:

  • Flamebreaker Armor required — the temple is filled with fire hazards
  • Fireproof Elixir recommended for boss phase
  • 5+ Bomb Flowers for cracked wall shortcuts

Puzzle approach:

  • 5 gongs spread across different floors must all be struck to unlock the boss room
  • Each gong area has a cracked wall nearby — Yunobo breaks it for a passage
  • Work floor-by-floor using the mine cart rails when possible (Yunobo can ride carts)

Boss: Marbled Gohma (Spider)

Phase 1: Gohma hangs on the ceiling covered in stone armor. Aim Yunobo (press Y) at the glowing orange eye on its body — Yunobo's rock ball cracks the armor.

  • After enough Yunobo hits, Gohma falls to the floor — melee the exposed eye
  • Gohma drops stalactites from the ceiling — dodge by watching their shadows

Phase 2: Gohma enters the lava temporarily, then re-emerges. Same mechanic — Yunobo shots to crack armor, then melee.

Best approach: Position near Gohma's eye trajectory for fast Yunobo releases. Time releases with Gohma's arm swings for cleaner hits.

Water Temple (Zora's Domain / Lanayru)

Access: Complete the Sidon questline → clear Hyrule's water supply → the Water Temple floats as a sky island above Lanayru

Core mechanic: The temple is a circular water platform with 4 water spout mechanisms. Sidon's Water Shield can store and release water — used to clear Sludge (dark mud) blocking mechanism access.

Preparation:

  • Zora Armor helps but is not strictly required for the temple interior
  • Bomb Arrows for one specific mechanism unlock
  • Shock Fruit or electric weapon for Sludge enemy encounters

Puzzle approach:

  • 4 water spout terminals must be activated clockwise around the central basin
  • Each terminal has Sludge blocking it — use Sidon's water burst to clean Sludge
  • Some terminals require accessing upper platforms via the water spouts themselves

Boss: Mucktorok (Sludge creature)

Phase 1: Mucktorok rides a Sludge shark around the arena. Hit Sidon's Water Shield + release burst at Mucktorok to stagger it — then melee the exposed creature.

  • When Mucktorok enters the Sludge pool — use Sidon's burst to drive it out
  • 3 hits per phase exposes the true form

Phase 2: Mucktorok creates multiple Sludge pools across the arena. Same mechanic but with more evasion required between hits.

Best approach: Sidon burst at close range deals more consistent damage than long-range. Stay mobile to avoid the Sludge shark charges.

Lightning Temple (Gerudo Desert)

Access: Complete the Riju questline → reach the Lightning Temple beneath the sand → navigate underground

Core mechanic: The temple is underground, partially dark, and filled with ancient mechanisms. Riju's Lightning Circle (press Y) electrifies enemies and unlocks lightning-activated devices.

Preparation:

  • Rubber Armor or Shock Resistance elixir for electric hazard rooms
  • Brightbloom Seeds for dark sections
  • High-attack weapon for Gibdo encounters (key enemies here)

Puzzle approach:

  • The temple is a grid of rooms — many have locked doors that open when specific lightning targets are activated
  • Use Riju's lightning on metal orbs or targets to unlock doors
  • Gibdo (undead enemies) block key pathways — they're weak to Riju's lightning and fire
  • Look for the light shaft through the ceiling — this is the central navigation landmark

Boss: Queen Gibdo (Giant Moth)

Phase 1: Queen Gibdo summons Gibdo minions from sandstorm columns. Destroy the 4 sandstorm generators with Riju's lightning first — this clears minion spawns and exposes the boss.

  • After clearing generators: use Riju's Circle on Queen Gibdo → electric armor falls off → melee the exposed carapace

Phase 2: Queen Gibdo's pattern becomes more aggressive with larger AoE moth wing slams. Same mechanic — destroy generators as they reform, then burst Riju's circle on the boss.

Best approach: Focus generators immediately — fighting the boss with active minion spawns is unsustainable. Lightning Fuse arrows help destroy generators faster.

Spirit Temple (Depths)

Access: After all 4 main temples — find Mineru's research lab in the Depths → complete the Construct rebuild quest

Core mechanic: Mineru operates as a giant mechanical Construct body. You control the Construct from its head while Mineru provides power. Uses Ultrahand to interact with the temple environment at scale.

Preparation:

  • Full exploration of Central Depths helpful for navigation
  • 3+ battery cells for extended Construct operation
  • Sundelion meals for Gloom recovery (the Depths approach has Gloom)

Puzzle approach:

  • The temple has 4 terminals like the other temples, but Mineru's Construct is used for heavy lifting, platform bridging, and combat
  • All mechanisms involve the Construct picking up and moving giant objects
  • Construct can be equipped with Zonai weapons — equip a flame emitter for fire-type locks

Boss: Master Kohga (4th encounter)

This is the final Kohga fight — the Yiga Clan leader's last stand. The fight uses Mineru's Construct abilities.

  • Same three-phase pattern as previous Kohga fights but scaled to Construct size
  • Throw objects at Kohga using Ultrahand — time the release with his teleport
  • Phase 3: Kohga builds his own contraption — destroy its components with Construct melee before destroying Kohga's device

General Temple Preparation

| Preparation Item | Which Temples | |-----------------|--------------| | Cold resistance food/armor | Wind Temple | | Flamebreaker armor | Fire Temple | | Stamina food (2+ wheels) | Wind Temple, Water Temple | | Brightbloom Seeds (15+) | Lightning Temple, Spirit Temple | | Bomb Arrows (20+) | All temples for shortcuts | | Fire arrows (10+) | Fire Temple, Lightning Temple (Gibdo) | | Keese Eyeball Fused arrows | All temples (boss phases) | | Sundelion meals (10+) | Spirit Temple (Depths approach) |

Quick Tips

  • Temple prep over portal rush — Don't enter temples immediately after getting the marker. Prepare cold/fire resistance and stamina food first.
  • Yunobo and Riju have combat cooldowns — use their abilities when cooldown is zero (indicated by the ability timer). Don't save them — use them constantly.
  • Shrine sensors in temple regions — Sensor+ set to Shrine helps find the specific path shrines near each temple that give story context
  • Photo every mechanism — use the Camera to photograph mechanisms when confused. Reviewing the photo outside combat helps spot what you missed.
  • Kill all Gibdo before fighting Queen Gibdo — leaving minions active when the boss phase starts creates chaos. Clear the room first.
