Thunder Helm Guide — How to Get the Gerudo Thunder Helm in TotK
Thunder Helm Guide — Gerudo's Lightning-Proof Helmet
The Thunder Helm is one of the most powerful single-piece armor items in TotK — it grants full Lightning-Resistance by itself, eliminating all lightning damage from storms and thunder-based enemies. Worn by Riju (Chief of the Gerudo), it was stolen by the Yiga Clan and must be retrieved through the Gerudo Resistance questline.
Thunder Helm Stats
| Stat | Value | |------|-------| | Defense | 3 (base) | | Effect | Lightning Resistance (full protection, single piece) | | Upgradeable? | No — the Thunder Helm cannot be upgraded at Great Fairies | | Set Bonus | Not part of a set — it's a standalone helm |
What Lightning Resistance does: You take no damage from lightning strikes. This is critical in:
- Gerudo Desert during thunderstorms
- Gerudo Highlands and Necluda storms
- Fighting Thunder Gleeoks
- Fighting Queen Gibdo (Phase 2 lightning phase)
How to Get the Thunder Helm
The Thunder Helm is a quest reward — you cannot buy or find it in a chest. You must complete the Gerudo Resistance side questline.
Step 1 — Enter Gerudo Town
Gerudo Town requires disguising as a Vai (female). To enter:
- Talk to a Gerudo merchant outside the gate, or find someone selling vai clothing
- Purchase the Desert Voe set or Gerudo outfit from the secret shop
- Equip the outfit and pass through the gate
Alternative: The Lightning Temple main quest will naturally bring you to Gerudo Town. Complete the Desert Voe entry step as part of reaching Riju.
Step 2 — Start the Gerudo Resistance Quest
Inside Gerudo Town:
- Speak with Captain Teake in the barracks (lower section of Gerudo Town)
- She explains that the Thunder Helm was stolen by the Yiga Clan
- She requests help to track down the four squad leaders of the Gerudo Resistance who went to retrieve the helm — and haven't come back
Quest name: "The Missing Owner" chain, or tracked as part of the Gerudo side adventure series.
Step 3 — Rescue the Four Resistance Members
Four Gerudo soldiers went out to find the Thunder Helm and each got captured or stopped. Find and rescue them:
Recruit 1 — Merina (Kara Kara Bazaar area)
- Location: Near Kara Kara Bazaar, north of Gerudo Town
- Situation: Confronting Yiga Clan soldiers at the oasis
- Help her defeat the Yiga ambush
- Reward: One lead on the Thunder Helm's location
Recruit 2 — Leena (Gerudo Canyon)
- Location: In Gerudo Canyon Pass, northeast of Gerudo Town
- Situation: Pinned down, surrounded by Yiga Clan
- Help her fight off the Yiga
- Reward: Another lead
Recruit 3 — Flaxel (East Barrens / Wasteland Tower region)
- Location: In the eastern desert, near the wasteland area
- Situation: Fought Yiga and taken the helm back, but still in danger
- Help her escape
- Reward: Partial helm recovery
Recruit 4 — Canolo (Gerudo Town underground)
- Location: In the Gerudo Town cellar/underground area
- Situation: Discovered Yiga Clan infiltrators in the town itself
- Help her clear the underground
After rescuing all four, return to Captain Teake in the barracks.
Step 4 — Confront the Yiga Mastermind
After all four rescues, the trail leads to the primary Yiga Clan operative in Gerudo Town. This fight takes place in or near the Gerudo Town underground area.
Enemy: Yiga Clan Blademaster (enhanced variant)
- High HP, teleports frequently
- Uses Claymores and Windcleavers
- Weak to: burst damage (Bomb Arrows), Flurry Rush after dodge
Defeat the Yiga operative to fully recover the Thunder Helm.
Step 5 — Return the Helm to Riju
Bring the Thunder Helm back to Riju (Chief of the Gerudo) — she's in her throne room in Gerudo Town.
Reward: Riju gives you the Thunder Helm as thanks for your help. It goes directly into your armor inventory.
Using the Thunder Helm
Gerudo Desert Storms
The desert regularly has lightning storms, especially in the Gerudo Highlands. The Thunder Helm alone blocks all lightning:
- No need to de-equip metal weapons during storms
- Can use metal bows and shields freely
- Safe to stand in open desert during thunderstorms
Thunder Gleeok Fights
Thunder Gleeoks shoot lightning balls in Phase 2. With the Thunder Helm equipped, you take zero damage from their projectile lightning attacks. Use it alongside Rubber Armor for stacking (though one-piece Lightning Resistance is already full protection).
Queen Gibdo — Phase 2
In the Lightning Temple boss fight, Gibdo Phase 2 calls down lightning strikes from the arena ceiling. The Thunder Helm eliminates all lightning damage, making Phase 2 significantly safer.
Thunder Helm vs. Rubber Armor
| Option | Pieces Required | Defense Total | Other Benefits | |--------|----------------|--------------|---------------| | Thunder Helm alone | 1 piece | 3 | Frees up body + boots slots | | Full Rubber Armor set | 3 pieces | 9 (base) | Shock damage boost set bonus |
Verdict:
- Thunder Helm wins for flexibility — one piece gives full protection, freeing two armor slots for other sets
- Rubber Armor wins for combat — better defense and the Unshockable set bonus makes you deal more electric damage
For exploration and boss fights: Thunder Helm. For full lightning-build combat: Rubber Armor set.
Thunder Helm + Lightning Build
Pair the Thunder Helm with:
- Topaz weapon fusions (your arrows and melee deal electric damage while you're immune)
- Electric-element Zonai devices (electric emitters, stun attacks)
- Queen Gibdo fights (single most useful item for that dungeon)
