Thunderstorm Survival Guide — Lightning, Shelters, and Storm Farming
Thunderstorm Survival Guide
Thunderstorms in Tears of the Kingdom are more than a nuisance — they're a farming opportunity and a combat variable that can kill you instantly if you're not prepared. Understanding when storms occur, how to avoid lightning, and which enemies to hunt during them will make you a significantly more efficient player.
How Thunderstorms Work
Storm Frequency and Timing
Thunderstorms in TotK are weather-cycle based, not purely random. Each region has its own weather probability table, and storms cycle on a roughly 3–5 real-minute rotation when conditions align (which translates to longer in-game cycles). Key facts:
- Thunderhead Isles and the area above them are in a permanent storm — lightning strikes continuously regardless of time of day
- Faron Grasslands and the Lanayru Wetlands have the highest surface-level storm frequency
- Eldin (Death Mountain) has frequent lightning but it is visually distinct — volcanic lightning, not storm-based
- Storms are most common at night in Faron and Necluda
- You cannot predict storms by looking at a clock — watch the sky transition from cloudy overcast to dark rolling clouds
Visual Storm Warnings
Before lightning begins, you will see:
- Sky color shifts from blue/golden to a flat gray overcast
- Clouds thicken and become dark purple-gray
- Thunder sound effects begin (rumbling without lightning)
- After 15–30 seconds, active lightning starts striking
If you are carrying metal equipment when lightning begins, unequip it immediately.
Metal Equipment and Lightning Danger
What Attracts Lightning
Any metal item in your hand or on your body increases lightning strike probability. This includes:
- Metal swords, spears, claymores in your hand
- Metal shields on your back
- Metal bows equipped
- Armor pieces with metal components (Royal Guard set, Soldier's armor, Zora armor)
You do not need to be the highest point in the area. Lightning homes in on metallic items even if trees, rocks, or enemies are nearby. This is the #1 cause of sudden death in open-field storms.
How to Stay Safe
Option 1 — Unequip all metal gear. Switch to wooden weapons (Boko Club, Wooden Shield, or any fused wooden weapon). Wood does not conduct. Keep a wooden backup set in your inventory for storm situations.
Option 2 — Get indoors. Any cave, stable, or building interior blocks lightning entirely.
Option 3 — Use Rubber Armor. The Rubber Armor set (found in Woodcutter's House east of Lookout Landing, Lightning Temple reward, and Rito Village vendor) gives Shock Resistance. The full 3-piece set grants Unshockable, making you completely immune to lightning strikes. This is the best permanent solution for storm regions.
Option 4 — Crouch and wait. Crouching behind large rocks reduces (but does not eliminate) lightning risk. Useful for brief pauses during combat but not a reliable long-term strategy.
Lightning Strike Damage
A direct lightning strike deals approximately 8 hearts of damage and launches Link into the air. If you have fewer than 8 hearts or are near a cliff edge, a strike is typically lethal. Lightning also ignites flammable materials — wooden shields, wooden weapons, and nearby vegetation will catch fire.

Lanayru Wetlands
Lanayru is particularly dangerous during storms because the shallow water conducts electricity and enemies use shock attacks. Shelters:
- Zora's Domain (covered walkways throughout)
- Lanayru Wetlands Caves — scattered small caves with 2–5 room depth
- East Reservoir Lake cliffs — rocky overhangs above waterline
Thunderstorm Farming
Shock Fruit Farming
Shock Fruit grows on Stormbranch Trees, which appear predominantly in:
- Faron Grasslands (northeast of Faron Tower)
- Necluda hillsides near Lake Hylia
- Akkala forest patches
Shock Fruit spawns are fixed and reset with Blood Moons. During a storm, Shock Fruit becomes slightly more visible due to the faint electrical glow of the trees. It does not grow faster during storms — the weather simply makes them easier to spot at night.
Farming route: Faron Tower area has the highest Stormbranch Tree density. Collect all fruit on foot, fast-travel to Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower (different region), collect there, then return to Faron after a Blood Moon. Average yield: 20–40 Shock Fruit per full route.
Uses: Shock Fruit fused to arrows = Shock Arrows (stun enemies, activate electric mechanisms). Shock Fruit cooked with meat = Electro Elixirs (electric damage resistance).
Yellow Lizalfos Farming During Storms
Yellow Lizalfos (also called Electric Lizalfos) become more active and aggressive during thunderstorms and spawn in higher densities in storm-prone regions. Best storm farming locations:
- Lanayru Wetlands — Yellow Lizalfos patrol the waterways in groups of 2–4
- Faron Grasslands — south end, near the giant Lake Floria
- Necluda Coast — cliff edges facing east
Combat strategy during storms: Do NOT use metal weapons against Yellow Lizalfos in storms — the Lizalfos will absorb ambient lightning and become temporarily immune to electric damage while reflecting it back. Use:
- Fire-fused arrows to break their electric shield
- Bomb Flowers attached to arrows for reliable non-electric damage
- Keese Eyeball arrows for homing accuracy in poor visibility
Yellow Lizalfos drops:
- Yellow Lizalfos Tail — fuse to weapons for electric damage, or cook into Electro Elixirs
- Yellow Lizalfos Horn — moderate cooking ingredient
- Electric Lizalfos Talon (rare) — higher-value crafting item
Thunderwing Butterfly Farming
Thunderwing Butterflies are found in Faron and Eldin regions, appearing more frequently during and immediately after thunderstorms. They rest on flowers and tall grass — watch for the faint blue electrical shimmer on their wings.
Best farming spots:
- Faron Grasslands center (around 0800, -2800 area) — 6–10 butterflies per route
- Eldin Canyon lower slopes — sheltered from Death Mountain heat, butterflies cluster near water seeps
- East Necluda hillsides near Kakariko Village
Do not run when approaching Thunderwing Butterflies — they flee from rapid movement. Walk slowly or use Stealth Armor + Sneakstrike approach to collect without scattering them.
Uses: Thunderwing Butterfly + Lizard Tail cooked = Electro Elixir (grants Shock Resistance for 3:00–12:30 depending on potency). These elixirs are essential for Vah Naboris-tier combat and any water-region boss.
Electric Lizalfos Ambush Strategy During Storms
Storms give you a powerful offensive tool: environmental lightning as a weapon.
The Metal Bait Technique
- Drop a metal weapon or shield on the ground near a Yellow Lizalfos patrol route
- Move away to a safe distance (15–20 meters)
- Wait for storm lightning to strike the metal item
- The lightning bolt will arc to nearby Lizalfos, dealing massive damage or instant-killing lower-tier variants
- Loot the stunned or killed enemies safely
This requires no resources and works reliably in open fields during active storms.
Elevated Platform Ambush
Yellow Lizalfos in Lanayru Wetlands cluster near elevated stepping-stone platforms. During storms:
- Position yourself on a high wooden platform (Ultrahand a wooden crate or flat plank if needed)
- Lizalfos below are hit by more lightning due to water conductivity
- Use a Shock Fruit arrow to trigger an initial stun, then switch to non-metal melee
- Chain kills during the stun window before they recover their electric shield
Quick Reference Card
| Situation | Action | |-----------|--------| | Storm starts, you have metal gear | Immediately unequip to wooden weapons | | Storm, no shelter nearby | Find cave entrance or crouch behind rocks | | Want full immunity | Equip 3-piece Rubber Armor set | | Farming Shock Fruit | Faron Grasslands route, check Stormbranch Trees | | Farming Yellow Lizalfos | Lanayru Wetlands, fire/bomb arrows only | | Farming Thunderwing Butterfly | Walk slowly in Faron center, no running | | Metal bait trick | Drop metal weapon, wait for lightning arc |
