Water Temple Guide — Sidon, Water Wheel Terminals & Mucktorok Boss
Water Temple Guide — Sidon's Water Bubble & Mucktorok
The Water Temple is a sky structure above Lanayru — a series of interconnected water chambers where Sidon's water bubble mechanic is central to puzzle-solving and combat. This guide covers the full walkthrough, all 5 terminals, and the Mucktorok boss.
Prerequisites
- Complete the Zora's Domain questline — investigate the sludge, find Sidon, clear the mudfall investigation
- Zora Armor (recommended) — swimming speed in the Water Temple's water channels is dramatically better with Zora Armor. The chest piece is the minimum (enables waterfall swimming which is used extensively)
- Shock resistance — some Water Temple enemies are electric
Getting to the Water Temple
The Water Temple is a sky island above Lanayru.
Method — Water Geyser Launch:
- Complete the Zora's Domain questline far enough that Sidon joins you
- Travel to the sky launch point (quest marker) north of Zora's Domain
- Four water geysers must be cleared of sludge to create upward jets
- Each geyser: use Sidon's water bubble to wash the sludge off the geyser caps
- All 4 clear → they fire simultaneously → water column launches Link and Sidon into the sky
- Glide to the Water Temple entrance
Returning:
- Shrine at temple entrance for fast travel
- Repeat the geyser launch from ground level
Sidon's Water Bubble — How It Works
Sidon's sage power: He creates a water bubble around Link that can be hurled at targets.
Key mechanics:
- Sludge removal: The water bubble instantly washes Gloom-sludge off surfaces, enemies, and mechanisms. Core to all Water Temple puzzles.
- Water shield: The bubble provides brief protection from incoming attacks
- Splash damage: Throwing the bubble at enemies deals water damage and removes any fire enhancement from Lizalfos/Bokoblins
- Waterwheel activation: Directing the water bubble at waterwheels spins them to open gates
Temple Overview
The Water Temple is built around a central pillar of rising water, with 5 terminal chambers arranged around it on multiple levels. Many chambers are partially flooded — Zora Armor makes these sections significantly faster to traverse.
Terminal Locations
Terminal 1 — South Chamber (Waterwheel)
- Enter the temple → head south
- A large waterwheel blocks a gate
- Call Sidon → aim the water bubble at the waterwheel → throw → wheel spins → gate opens
- Terminal 1 is in the chamber beyond
Terminal 2 — East Chamber (Sludge Gate)
- Head east from the central pillar
- A gate is sealed with Gloom-sludge covering the mechanism
- Sidon's bubble washes the sludge off → mechanism activates → gate opens
- Terminal 2 is in the alcove
Terminal 3 — North Chamber (Rising Platform)
- North section has a water-powered rising platform — currently non-functional (waterflow blocked by sludge)
- The water inlet pipe has sludge in the opening
- Sidon bubble into the pipe inlet → sludge cleared → water flows → platform rises
- Ride the platform up to the terminal level → Terminal 3
Terminal 4 — West Chamber (Waterfall Swim)
- West section: a waterfall flowing down from a high chamber
- Terminal 4 is at the top of the waterfall, not the bottom
- Zora Armor required (chest piece minimum): Swim into the base of the waterfall → Zora Armor lets Link swim upward
- Climb the waterfall → Terminal 4 at the top
Without Zora Armor: You must find an alternate route — a climbable wall on the west side of the chamber provides access to the top, but it's significantly harder.
Terminal 5 — Central Top (Double Mechanism)
- Access the central pillar chamber (requires completing Terminals 1-4 to unlock the central shaft)
- Two simultaneous mechanisms: a waterwheel AND a sludge-sealed lever must be triggered at the same time
- Puzzle: Ultrahand the lever to touch the waterwheel mechanism while Sidon's bubble activates the wheel
- Or: water bubble removes the sludge from the lever (one action) → pull lever → waterwheel activates separately
- Terminal 5 is at the top of the central pillar
Mucktorok — Boss Fight
With all 5 terminals active → the boss chamber opens at the top of the central pillar → Mucktorok
Mucktorok is a small, fast creature that swims through Gloom-sludge and summons a shark-shaped sludge construct.
Phase 1 — Shark Mode
Mucktorok hides inside a large sludge shark that moves rapidly around the arena.
Phase 1 strategy:
- The sludge shark circles and charges at Link
- When the shark charges → throw Sidon's water bubble at the shark's mouth
- The water washes away the sludge → Mucktorok is exposed and stunned
- Sprint to Mucktorok → melee combo while it's stunned
- It quickly summons a new sludge shark → repeat
Sludge floor: The arena floor gradually fills with Gloom-sludge as the fight progresses. This slows movement and drains hearts. Sidon's bubble temporarily clears a section of floor — use it to maintain safe footing.
Shark charge dodge: The sludge shark charges in a straight line. Dodge sideways. If it hits, Link takes sludge damage and Gloom heart reduction.
Phase 2 — Enraged (Below Half HP)
Mucktorok becomes faster and summons two sludge constructs simultaneously:
- Two sharks circling at different speeds and angles
- Must identify which one contains Mucktorok (the real one glows slightly)
- Other is a decoy — washing it with water reveals it's empty
Phase 2 pattern:
- Scan both sharks — the real one moves slightly erratically vs the decoy's smooth circling
- Throw water bubble at the suspected real shark → if it exposes Mucktorok, attack
- If it was the decoy, quickly locate the real shark before it charges
- Once Mucktorok is exposed in Phase 2: attack with stronger weapons — the exposed window is shorter
Rewards
- Heart Container (or Stamina Vessel exchange)
- Sidon Sage's Vow — he permanently joins; his water bubble available anywhere
- Water Temple Clear — Zora's Domain questline resolved; the sludge mudfall stops
Quick Tips
- Zora Armor before the temple — get the Zora Armor chest piece from King Dorephan before entering. Terminal 4 is accessible without it but dramatically harder. The armor transforms the Water Temple experience.
- Sludge floor management — in the Mucktorok fight, use Sidon's bubble proactively to maintain clean floor space, not just to attack the shark. Losing safe standing room is how people die in this fight.
- Sidon can shield — Sidon's water bubble has a brief defensive use when timed to incoming damage. If the sludge shark is about to connect and you can't dodge, trigger the bubble for damage reduction.
- Identify the real shark — in Phase 2, watch for subtle movement differences. The real Mucktorok shark makes slightly tighter turns. The decoy moves in a wider, more mechanical circle.
- Terminal 4 is the hardest navigation — if you don't have Zora Armor, the west chamber alternative climbing route is obscure. Check the walls above the waterfall base carefully — there's a climbable section on the left side.
