Weather & Environment Guide — Rain, Cold, Heat, Lightning in TotK
Weather & Environment Guide — Surviving Every Climate in Hyrule
Tears of the Kingdom's world is divided into distinct climate zones that affect traversal, combat, and survival. Rain prevents climbing, extreme cold and heat drain hearts, and lightning can one-shot you if you're holding metal. Understanding weather is essential for efficient exploration.
Quick Reference
| Hazard | Effect | Counter | |--------|--------|---------| | Rain | Climb grip reduced to near-zero | Wait it out, use Ascend, find shelter | | Cold | Heart drain over time | Cold Resistance food/elixir, warm gear | | Extreme Cold | Rapid heart drain | High-tier Cold Resistance (Level 2+) | | Heat | Heart drain over time | Heat Resistance food/elixir, cool gear | | Lightning | Instant massive damage | Remove metal gear, use wooden weapons | | High Altitude Wind | Stamina drain climbing | Wind-resistant routes, Ascend |
Rain
What Rain Does
Rain reduces climbing grip to nearly nothing — Link slides off walls almost immediately unless you have the Climbing Gear set bonus or use Ascend through terrain. Rain is the single biggest traversal obstacle in TotK.
What rain blocks:
- Normal wall climbing (grip ~10% of normal)
- Tree/cliff face climbing
- Extended wall traversal
What rain does NOT block:
- Ascend (works through any surface regardless of rain)
- Paraglider flight
- Movement on flat ground
- Swimming
Dealing With Rain
Option 1: Wait it out Stand under shelter, crouch near a fire, or fast-travel to a shrine. Weather cycles every 5-20 minutes of real time.
Option 2: Use Ascend Ascend works through stone, earth, and most surfaces rain or not. Route your traversal through caves, ruins, or surfaces where Ascend can bypass rain-blocked cliffs.
Option 3: Climbing Gear The Climbing Gear set (Tunic of Climbing + Climbing Boots + Climbing Bandanna) reduces the grip penalty significantly. The full 3-piece set bonus "Climb Speed Up" partially compensates for rain.
Option 4: Flame Emitter / Fire Fire-based tools briefly dry nearby surfaces, but this effect is minimal and impractical for sustained climbing.
Rain Zones
Rain is most frequent in:
- Lanayru Wetlands / Zora's Domain area — nearly constant light rain
- Faron Grasslands — frequent tropical showers
- Necluda Region — regular rainfall
Rain is rare in:
- Gerudo Desert — essentially never rains (sandstorms instead)
- Hebra Mountains — precipitation falls as snow
- Eldin Volcano — near-zero rain
Cold Environments
Cold Damage Mechanics
Cold deals progressive heart damage when Link is in a cold zone without protection. The damage rate depends on the cold tier:
| Cold Level | Location Examples | Damage Rate | |------------|------------------|-------------| | Mild Cold | Hebra foothills, high altitude at night | Slow drain | | Severe Cold | Deep Hebra, Lanayru Mountain, Snowfield Stable area | Moderate drain | | Extreme Cold | Hebra Peak summit, Pikida Stonegrove | Fast drain |
Cold damage depletes yellow (bonus) hearts first, then red hearts.
Cold Protection Sources
Armor (Best for Exploration)
| Armor | Cold Resistance Level | Notes | |-------|----------------------|-------| | Snowquill Set | ★★ (Level 1), ★★★ (set bonus) | Best cold armor, Rito Village shop | | Archaic Warm Greaves | ★ | Early game, Great Sky Island only | | Ember Set (Goron) | ★ (warmth, not cold resist) | Less effective for cold |
Food / Elixirs (Best for Short Expeditions)
Any meal containing Warm Darner, Summerwing Butterfly, or Spicy Peppers grants Cold Resistance. Duration scales with ingredient count.
Spicy Pepper + any base meal → Cold Resistance Level 1 (3-5 min)
3x Warm Darner elixir → Cold Resistance Level 2 (5-8 min)
The Warming Effect (Early Game) On the Great Sky Island before getting armor, cook Spicy Peppers into Spicy Sautéed Peppers for immediate cold resistance.
Cold Strategy
- Wear Snowquill set in Hebra — it covers all cold zones below the summit
- Hebra Peak summit requires Cold Resistance Level 2 or higher (either upgraded Snowquill or elixir)
- Night temperatures in any mountain region are colder than day — plan accordingly
Hot Environments
Heat Damage Mechanics
Heat works identically to cold — progressive heart drain in hot zones without protection. The volcano region and some desert caves require heat protection.
| Heat Level | Location Examples | Notes | |------------|------------------|-------| | Warm | Eldin foothills, southern Faron at midday | Minor discomfort | | Hot | Eldin Volcano lower slopes, Death Mountain | Moderate drain | | Extreme Heat | Eldin Volcano crater, Death Mountain summit | Fast drain |
Heat Protection Sources
Armor
| Armor | Heat Resistance | Notes | |-------|----------------|-------| | Flamebreaker Set | ★★ (upgraded), ★★★ (set bonus) | Goron City shop, essential for volcano | | Desert Voe Set | ★★ | Gerudo Secret Club — also protection against heat | | Snowquill Set | None | Does NOT protect from heat |
Food / Elixirs
Ingredients with cooling effects:
- Chillshroom — Chilly Mushroom Skewer grants Heat Resistance
- Cold Darner / Winterwing Butterfly — elixir base for heat resistance
- Hydromelon / Cool Safflina — food-based heat protection
Heat vs Flame Damage
Heat damage (from climate zones) is different from Fire damage (from enemies, lava, fire arrows). The Flamebreaker Set protects from both. Eating a Fireproof Elixir only prevents catching fire — it does not prevent heat drain from climate zones.
Lightning
Lightning Mechanics
During thunderstorms, lightning randomly strikes the highest conductive point near Link. If Link is holding metal weapons, wearing metal armor, or standing in an open elevated area, he is at extreme risk of a direct strike.
Lightning damage: ~4-6 hearts (can one-shot on low health) Lightning paralysis: Brief stun when struck, leaving Link vulnerable
Lightning Zones
Thunderstorms occur in:
- Lanayru area — most frequent, especially near Zora's Domain
- Faron Grasslands — regular storms
- Central Hyrule — occasional storms
Thunderstorms do NOT occur in:
- Gerudo Desert (sandstorms instead)
- Hebra (snow, not lightning)
- Underground / Depths / Caves
Lightning Safety Rules
Rule 1: Drop metal weapons Open your inventory and drop metal swords, spears, and shields before entering open terrain in a storm. Wooden weapons are completely safe.
Rule 2: Equip non-metal armor Flamebreaker Armor and Zora Armor are metal — swap to Snowquill, Hylian, or fabric sets during storms.
Rule 3: Use lightning offensively Standing near metal enemy weapons or metal enemy armor during a storm will redirect lightning to them, dealing massive damage. This is especially effective against Lynels and Bokoblins with metal gear.
Rule 4: Lightning Rod Trick Hold a metal weapon and stand near an enemy during a storm — the lightning strike will chain to nearby enemies. Drop the weapon before the bolt lands to avoid self-damage. Advanced tech for clearing camps.
Sandstorms (Gerudo Desert)
Sandstorms are unique to the Gerudo Desert and are not the same as weather in other regions.
Sandstorm effects:
- Reduces visibility significantly
- Reveals Gibdo Hives (they glow through the haze)
- Does NOT damage Link directly
- Reduces the range of the Sensor+
Navigating sandstorms:
- Use the Purah Pad compass and map rather than visual landmarks
- Gibdos are more active during sandstorms — maintain awareness
- The Voe Set's heat protection works normally in sandstorms
Altitude and Wind
High Altitude Effects
At extreme altitudes (Great Sky Islands, high sky platforms), strong winds affect:
- Paraglider control — updrafts and crosswinds push Link off course
- Arrow trajectory — arrows curve significantly in high wind
- Stamina drain — not directly, but wind gusts interrupt climbing
Working with updrafts:
- Many sky island areas have natural updrafts that launch Link skyward with the paraglider
- Look for spinning dust columns, rising embers, or flapping flags to identify updraft locations
- Fire sources (Flame Emitters, burning grass) create temporary updrafts
Night Cold at Altitude
Any elevated area — towers, sky islands, mountains — becomes cold at night even if it was comfortable during the day. When climbing to a Skyview Tower at night, carry a warming elixir or wear the Snowquill set.
Cooking for Climate
Priority Buff Recipes by Zone
For Hebra Expedition:
5x Spicy Pepper → Spicy Sautéed Peppers (Level 1 Cold Resist, ~10 min)
3x Warm Darner + 1 Monster Part → Level 2 Cold Resist Elixir (8-12 min)
For Death Mountain / Eldin Volcano:
5x Chillshroom → Chilly Mushroom Skewer (Level 1 Heat Resist, ~10 min)
3x Cold Darner + 1 Monster Part → Level 2 Heat Resist Elixir (8-12 min)
Emergency Cold (Great Sky Island early game):
1x Spicy Pepper + anything → Level 1 Cold Resist (~3-5 min)
Environmental Cooking Bonuses
Rain and storms have one hidden benefit: cooking during a Blood Moon always produces a critical success. Regular cooking (at any pot) has a small chance of a critical success (bonus effect or duration). You cannot time this to weather normally, but Blood Moon is guaranteed.
The temperature of your cooking environment does NOT affect recipe outcomes. Cold = same as hot = same results.
