Advanced Zonai Builds Guide — Vehicles, Combat & Contraptions

Ultrahand + Zonai devices create some of the most creative problem-solving in any Zelda game. Beyond the basic hoverbike, there's an entire engineering space: combat turrets, automated bomb dispensers, sky bridges, underwater vehicles, and more. This guide covers the best builds and the principles behind efficient Zonai construction.

Core Build Principles

Before building, understand these fundamentals:

  1. Battery drain is your constraint — every Zonai device drains the Energy Cell. Builds with multiple devices drain faster. Know your battery limit before committing to a build.
  2. Stability matters — asymmetric builds tip over. Balance fans on opposite sides; balance weight.
  3. Friction kills momentum — builds that drag on the ground lose speed. Use wheels or lift devices to minimize friction.
  4. Autobuild is your build library — any structure you create can be saved to Autobuild for instant recall. Use it.

Best Vehicles

Hoverbike (Standard)

Components: 2× Fan + 1× Steering Stick Description: The most efficient general-purpose aerial vehicle in TotK

Build:

  1. Place a Fan flat (horizontal) as the base platform
  2. Attach a second Fan perpendicular on the side (vertical — provides lift)
  3. Attach Steering Stick on top for control

Operation: Mount the Steering Stick, tilt forward to move, tilt to steer. Ascends and travels indefinitely within battery range.

Battery consumption: Moderate — 1 full Energy Cell per 3-5 minutes of flight Speed: Fast horizontal travel — fastest surface-to-sky transit method

Speed Boat (Water)

Components: 2× Fan + 1× Steering Stick + flat raft/platform Description: Fast water traversal for Zora's Domain area or Lake Hylia

Build:

  1. Find or Fuse a raft/flat surface (fallen boards, construct platforms)
  2. Attach 2 Fans facing backward at the rear of the raft
  3. Attach Steering Stick at the front

Alternative: 1 Fan angled at 45 degrees backward on any flat surface works similarly.

Best use: Crossing Lake Hylia, navigating Lanayru River, Zora's Domain water sections.

Glider (Low Power)

Components: 1× Wing + 1× Fan Description: Long-distance low-power glider for slow exploration

Build:

  1. Ultrahand a Zonai Wing (the large glider device)
  2. Attach 1 Fan at the rear
  3. Mount the Wing

Advantage: Very low battery drain — the Wing provides lift naturally, Fan just provides thrust. Excellent for long cross-map flights when battery is limited.

Disadvantage: Slow. Not good for combat or rapid transit.

Tank (Ground Combat)

Components: 2× Wheel + 1× Steering Stick + 1× Cannon or Laser Description: Mobile ground combat vehicle with an attached weapon

Build:

  1. Place 2 Wheels on either side of a flat surface
  2. Attach Steering Stick for control
  3. Attach Cannon or Laser facing forward

Use case: Dealing with enemy camps from a distance — the tank's weapon fires while you steer. Effective against Bokoblin camps and mid-tier enemies.

Submarine (Underwater)

Components: 2× Fan (angled down) + airtight construct platform + Steering Stick Description: Controlled underwater descent — niche but useful for ocean floor chests

Build: Complex — requires Zonai device placement to angle thrust downward while remaining stable. Easier to use Zora Armor for most underwater sections.

Best use: Very deep ocean chests or the Zora's Domain underwater areas.

Combat Builds

Laser Turret (Stationary)

Components: 1× Laser + 1× construct frame (stable base) Description: Automated damage dealer — laser fires continuously at enemies

Build:

  1. Place a construct frame or stable platform
  2. Attach a Laser facing toward the enemy area
  3. Activate — laser fires continuously

Best use: Long-range harassment of Gloom Hand areas, Bokoblin camps, or while you engage in close combat elsewhere. The Laser hits independently of your actions.

Bomb Dispenser (Area Denial)

Components: 1× Time Bomb + platform + Recall Description: Bomb on a delay — use Recall to return it to starting position for repeated detonations

Concept: Place a Time Bomb on a ramp. Recall reverses the bomb's travel — letting it bounce back and forth near enemies.

Best use: Cave entrances, tight corridors where enemies funnel through.

Flying Sword (Sky Combat)

Components: Fuse a large cutting wheel to a flying platform Description: Spinning blade that flies into enemies — automated melee damage

Build: Attach a Saw Blade (Zonai or scavenged) to a Fan platform that flies toward enemies. The spinning blade hits anything in its path.

Autobuild — Building Library

Autobuild (obtained from Robbie's quest in the Depths) lets you:

  • Save any structure you've built to a library (up to 32 designs)
  • Recall any saved build instantly using Zonaite currency
  • Build from memory — Autobuild reconstructs even if you don't have the parts nearby (using Zonaite to compensate for missing pieces)

Best Builds to Save

  1. Hoverbike — save immediately after first successful build. Recall it from anywhere.
  2. Boat — save a basic water vehicle for Zora's Domain
  3. Combat turret — save your laser + platform configuration for quick deployment
  4. Ladder system — if you build a vertical ascent structure (fans + platforms for climbing), save it

Autobuild Tips

  • Label your builds — the library names them automatically but they're identifiable by shape. Keep your library pruned to the 10-15 most useful.
  • Recall in the Depths — Autobuild is especially powerful in the Depths where building materials are scarce. Recall your hoverbike from Zonaite instead of searching for fans.

Battery Upgrade Priority

More battery = longer Zonai device use. Priority upgrades:

Crystallized Charges → Large Zonai Charge → Battery upgrade:

  1. Collect Crystallized Charges (sky island supply depots, Depths mining)
  2. Exchange 100 Crystallized Charges for 1 Large Zonai Charge at a Crystal Refinery (Great Sky Island)
  3. Exchange Large Zonai Charges at the Construct chief for a battery slot upgrade

Each battery slot adds: 1 additional ring to your Energy Cell Max batteries: Several full rings can be added — plan for a minimum of 3 full battery rings for sustained hoverbike use.

Advanced Techniques

Infinite Gliding (Near-Infinite)

Hoverbike over a strong updraft → the updraft recharges your altitude without battery use. Circle updraft columns (storms, mountains) to sustain indefinite altitude.

Recall + Fan Combo

Attach a Fan to a projectile (rock, ball). Launch it. Use Recall to return it at high speed toward enemies — instant projectile weapon.

Magnesis Tower (Ultrahand Stacking)

Ultrahand multiple metallic objects to create tall towers for vantage points or cliff scaling. Recall can stabilize a swaying tower in mid-construction.

Bomb Launching

A Cannon attached to a pivot device launches bomb arrows or Time Bombs at extreme range — useful for long-range Gloom Hand harassment.

Quick Tips

  • Save hoverbike to Autobuild first — this is the single most impactful Autobuild action. Having instant hoverbike access from anywhere transforms exploration.
  • Battery before complexity — more complex builds need more battery. Don't build 4-device contraptions until you have at least 3 battery rings.
  • Fans stick better on flat surfaces — wobbly builds are usually caused by attaching fans to non-flat surfaces. Always use a stable flat base.
  • Zonai device capsules from sky — the most efficient way to stock device capsules is sky island supply depots. Visit them regularly.
  • One fan hoverbike is enough — a single fan + steering stick can function as a crude hoverbike if you're out of parts. Not as good, but usable.
