Zora Region Guide: Lanayru Wetlands and Zora's Domain
The Zora Region encompasses the Lanayru Wetlands, Zora's Domain, and the surrounding waterways of eastern Hyrule. It's the starting point for the Zora-related main quest and home to Sidon, the Zora prince whose water ability is essential for combat across the rest of the game. This guide covers how to reach the Domain, every major location in the region, the main and side quests, and tips for navigating the area efficiently.
Getting to Zora's Domain
Zora's Domain sits in the northeast quadrant of the map, elevated in the Lanayru region at approximately coordinates 3300, 540. When you first arrive, the Domain is covered in sludge raining down from above — a consequence of the Gloom spreading from Hyrule Castle that also corrupted the sky islands overhead.
The fastest early-game route on foot:
- From Lookout Landing, head northeast along the road toward Kakariko Village
- Continue north past Kakariko into Lanayru Wetlands — watch for Blue Chuchus in the flooded lower sections
- Follow the road signs east and then north — the path climbs through Zora's Domain Gate at the base of the cliffs
- Use Ascend through the stone arch pillar sections to bypass the climbing sections and reach the Domain platform faster
Alternatively, activate the Lanayru Tower to unlock the regional map and glide northeast, or fast-travel to any previously visited shrine in the wetlands and approach from there.
The Sludge Crisis
When Link first arrives at Zora's Domain, everything is coated in thick purple-black sludge falling from above. This is not just cosmetic — the sludge damages Link on contact and has disrupted Zora society. King Dorephan is missing, the Zora are unable to use their waterways, and trade has halted.
The sludge source is Mucktorok, the monster occupying the Water Temple floating above the Domain. Defeating Mucktorok in the Water Temple clears the sludge permanently — the Domain transforms dramatically, the waterfalls run clean, and a large portion of side quests unlock.
Key NPCs
- Prince Sidon: The main quest companion. Sidon is the most directly useful companion in the game — his water ability coats enemies in water, dramatically amplifying Shock Emitter damage and making wet-shock combos the most efficient damage strategy in the game
- King Dorephan: The missing king becomes a critical quest target. Finding him requires descending to the Ancient Zora Waterworks in the Depths
- Yona: Sidon's fiancée. She manages the Domain in Sidon's absence and directs Link toward the stone tablets
- Jiahto: A Zora scholar who has decoded the historical tablets. He provides the "Clues to the Sky" intel that guides Link upward to the Water Temple entrance
- Trello, Bazz, Muzu: Named Zora guards and merchants with their own side quests and lore dialogue — talking to all of them fills in the history of Zora's Domain from the BotW era
Key Locations in the Region
- Zora's Domain: The main hub at the top of the cliff waterfall system. After clearing sludge, it becomes the most visually dramatic location in the Lanayru region
- Ralis Pond: South of the domain — a fishing spot yielding rare Voltfin Trout used in armor upgrades and elixirs
- Mikau Lake and Luto's Crossing: Wetlands landmarks with Korok seeds and shrines
- Lanayru Wetlands: The flooded area south of the domain has multiple caves, Korok seeds, Blue Chuchus (valuable for shock resistance elixirs), and the road entrance to the Domain
- Mipha Court: A ruined memorial platform east of the Domain, commemorating the BotW Champion Mipha. Required for the "Restoring Mipha's Statue" side quest
- Upland Zorana: The elevated rocky terrain northeast of the Domain with cave systems and ore deposits
- Floating Scales Island: The sky island directly above Zora's Domain, accessible via the Domain's natural updraft. Contains a Zonai device dispenser
- Wellspring Island: The sky island housing the Water Temple entrance. The massive waterfall structure visible from the Domain is your target
Reaching the Water Temple
The Water Temple is accessed from Wellspring Island in the sky above Zora's Domain. The path up:
- Read the four "Clues to the Sky" stone tablets in the Domain (Jiahto marks them on your map)
- Each tablet describes a waterfall stone pillar — activate all four pillars using Sidon's water ability to direct water at the glowing symbols on each pillar
- Activating all four pillars raises a massive geyser from the Domain floor — ride the updraft with your paraglider high into the sky
- Reach Wellspring Island and locate the Water Temple entrance at the top of the island's water structure
The temple itself uses Sidon's ability extensively — every major puzzle involves directing water flows using his water coating and Link's Ultrahand.
Zora Armor Set
The Zora Armor set is the signature equipment of the region:
- Zora Armor (chest): Obtained from Yona as a main quest reward. Dramatically increases swim speed and allows Link to swim up waterfalls — essential for navigating the Domain's verticality and reaching certain sky island updraft points
- Zora Helm: Hidden in an underwater chest in Toto Lake (north of Zora's Domain). Increases swim speed further and adds bonus damage to spin attacks while swimming — notably the charged spinning attack in water
- Zora Greaves: Requires completing the "Restoring Mipha's Statue" side quest chain at Mipha Court
The full three-piece set bonus makes Link the fastest swimmer in the game and enables waterfall climbing from ground level to sky island updraft access points.
Side Quests and Activities
- Sidon of the Zora (main quest): Follow Sidon's trail north, clear sludge from the waterways, reach the Water Temple
- Restoring Mipha's Statue: Talk to Ledo at Mipha Court. Requires gathering materials and returning to the ruins — rewards include the Zora Greaves
- Ancient Zora Waterworks: An underground area in the Depths directly below Zora's Domain. Accessible via a whirlpool drain in the Domain. Contains Lightroots, rare materials, and the clue to King Dorephan's location
- A Token of Friendship (King Dorephan quest): Finding the king in the Depths rewards a heart container upgrade item
- Zora Historical Stone Tablets: Ten stone tablets scattered across the region tell Zora history from the BotW era to the present. Reading all ten completes a side quest and provides lore context for the sludge crisis
- Korok Seeds: Dense in the Lanayru Wetlands and around the Domain — look for seed puzzles on the water surface, under lilypads, and atop the cliff structures
Regional Tips
- Zora Armor lets Link swim up waterfalls — get the chest piece from Yona immediately after arriving to unlock the region's full vertical traversal
- Shock arrows and Shock Emitter capsules are available from Domain merchants and Lanayru sky island dispensers — stock up before the Water Temple
- Lanayru is consistently rainy, which makes all outdoor enemies wet. Plan combat during storms and bring Shock Emitters for maximum wet-shock efficiency
- Rubber Armor (from Akkala Highlands) negates electricity self-damage — useful if you're operating Shock Emitters around water near Link's position
- The Lanayru Shrines include some of the most puzzle-intensive designs in the game — particularly those involving water flow mechanics tied to Ultrahand
