Ascend Guide — Through Any Ceiling, Anywhere

Ascend is TotK's most revolutionary traversal tool — it lets Link pass upward through any solid surface directly above him. What sounds like a simple traversal shortcut becomes, with mastery, a tool for reaching sky islands, skipping dungeons, bypassing mountains, and solving puzzles in seconds. This guide covers every application.

How Ascend Works

Activation: Hold the Ascend button → Link swims upward through the ceiling of any solid surface overhead.

Requirements:

  • A solid ceiling must be directly above Link (within a specific height range)
  • Link can't Ascend through water, air, or empty space
  • The surface must be part of the game world (not an enemy or NPC)

Visual indicator: When Ascend is available, a circular indicator appears overhead. If no indicator = no valid surface above.

Uses per instance: Unlimited — there's no stamina cost and no cooldown. Ascend as many times as you need.

Surface Types That Work

Confirmed Ascend surfaces:

  • Stone and rock (natural cliff walls with ledges above)
  • Wood (wooden floors, platforms, bridge planks)
  • Metal (Zonai structures, castle floors)
  • Dirt/earth (cave ceilings with land above)
  • Zonai devices (platforms, large constructs)
  • Tree trunks (Ascend through tall trees to emerge at the canopy)
  • Ice formations
  • Roofs of buildings and structures

Does NOT work through:

  • Water (liquid surfaces)
  • Air or empty space
  • Very thin surfaces (some thin puzzle tiles — surface must have thickness)
  • Moving enemy bodies

Traversal Applications

Mountain and Cliff Shortcuts

The most immediate use: skip long climbing routes by Ascending through cliff overhangs.

Technique:

  1. Find a cliff face with an overhang or rock protrusion above
  2. Position directly under the overhang
  3. Ascend → emerge on top of the cliff

This converts a 2-minute climb into a 3-second Ascend. Works on almost every cliff and mountain in Hyrule.

Death Mountain shortcut: Multiple rocky overhangs around Death Mountain allow direct Ascend access to higher elevations without navigating the winding path.

Hebra peaks: Northern cliff faces often have multiple Ascend points stacked. Chain Ascends (emerge, immediately Ascend again through the next ceiling) to rapidly gain altitude.

Sky Island Access

Sky islands with rock undersides are directly Ascendable from below:

  1. Stand beneath a sky island (you need to be close enough — the indicator appears)
  2. Ascend → pass through the rock bottom → emerge on the island

This bypasses the need for a rocket-launch, Zonai fan platform, or Recall-debris method. Any sky island with solid rock underneath is directly accessible this way.

Great Sky Island: Heavily used in the tutorial — the designers built the entire beginning around Ascend + Recall. Revisiting Great Sky Island with mastered Ascend reveals how fast all those puzzles become.

Cave Traversal

Ascending from inside caves is one of the most useful techniques:

  • From inside a cave → Ascend → emerge in the field above
  • Bypasses finding and navigating cave exits
  • Particularly useful: If you fall into a cave accidentally, Ascend back to the surface rather than finding the exit

Cave-top Korok seeds: Several Korok seeds are on cliff tops directly above caves. Drop into the cave, complete the Korok puzzle at cave level, Ascend out the top.

Building and Structure Access

Ascending through floors and roofs:

  • Castle towers: Ascend through each floor rather than climbing stairs
  • Bokoblin Forts: Ascend through the fort's base platform to emerge inside
  • Enemy towers with locked doors: Ascend through the bottom to bypass the door entirely

Enemy camp infiltration: Almost every enemy camp has a floor or platform that can be Ascended. Enter from below rather than fighting through the front.

Puzzle Applications

Shrine Ceiling Puzzles

Many shrines have upward-facing puzzles solvable only with Ascend:

Ceiling chest: Some shrines have chests embedded in the ceiling. Ascend through the floor above and emerge where the chest is accessible.

Bypass puzzle floor: If you solve a shrine's required puzzle but have a shortcut Ascend point, you can sometimes skip sections. (Note: some shrine items require completing the puzzle — Ascend doesn't substitute for puzzle completion itself.)

Multi-floor shrine shortcuts: Chain Ascends through multiple shrine floors to reach the blessing faster.

Pit Escape

If you fall into a pit or deep area:

  1. Ascend through whatever is above you
  2. Often this leads to the surface or a higher level

This is particularly useful in the Depths — if you fall into a lower Depths chamber, Ascend through the ceiling (which may lead to a higher Depths area or back to the surface chasm).

Creative Uses

Enemy Stagger

Ascending under an enemy standing on a surface above:

  • If an enemy is on a thin platform and you Ascend through it → you emerge directly at the enemy's position
  • Instant close-range attack on emergence
  • Works particularly well on Bokoblin watchtowers

Mining from Below

Ascend through ore deposit floors to access deposits above without climbing:

  • Some ore deposits are on top of rock formations with cave access below
  • Ascend from the cave → mine the top deposits → drop back down

Skipping Boss Entry Puzzles

Several Depths boss arenas have difficult entry puzzles. Ascend shortcuts may exist:

  • Check if the boss chamber has solid ceiling directly accessible from below
  • If it does, Ascend bypasses the entry puzzle entirely

Quick Tips

  • Look for the indicator first — before committing to a long climb, walk under every nearby ledge and check for the Ascend indicator. Hyrule is designed with Ascend points deliberately placed. If a ledge seems climbable, there's often also an Ascend point.
  • Chain Ascends for maximum altitude — emerge from one Ascend, immediately check for another surface above, Ascend again. Rapid altitude gain with no stamina cost.
  • Tree Ascend is underused — thick forest trees can be Ascended. If you need height quickly in a forested area and there's no cliff, tree Ascend + paraglide from the canopy.
  • Sky island rock detection — some sky islands have thin rock undersides that don't show the indicator from maximum range. Get as close as possible (even if you can't see the island) to trigger the indicator.
  • Bokoblin fort infiltration — Ascend is the silent entry method. You bypass the front entrance entirely, emerge inside, and engage on your terms.
