Traversal Techniques Guide — Movement, Climbing & Exploration Skills
Traversal Techniques Guide — Getting Anywhere Fast
TotK gives Link more ways to move through the world than any previous Zelda. Between the four core abilities, the Paraglider, horses, and Zonai devices, there's almost no terrain that can't be crossed efficiently once you know the techniques. This guide covers all major traversal methods and when to use each.
The Core Traversal Toolkit
1. Paraglider (Aerial)
Best for: Long horizontal distances from elevation Efficiency: Excellent for downward or level travel; poor for upward without updrafts
Paraglider tips:
- Launch from ANY height advantage — towers, cliffs, sky islands
- Stamina management: Deploy paraglider BEFORE stamina runs out during a fall
- Tulin Gust chain: Activate Tulin Gust while paragliding → extend range indefinitely
- Updraft use: Fire sources (campfires, Zonai Flame Emitters) create updrafts — ride them for free altitude
- Bullet time: Draw bow while paragliding → enter slow motion → shoot. Best for hitting moving targets or landing precise shots during flight.
2. Climbing
Best for: Vertical ascent on any surface Limitation: Stamina-limited; wet surfaces (rain) can't be climbed
Climbing efficiency:
- Climbing Gear armor (3 shrine chest pieces in Necluda) increases climb speed — major QoL upgrade
- Ledge jump: At the top of any climbed surface, jump (press B) to gain extra reach — often allows reaching the top without a full stamina wheel
- Crouch-sprint before cliff: Run toward a cliff, crouch briefly at the base, then jump upward — the crouch before a jump gives slightly extra upward momentum
- Rain bypass: Can't climb in rain. Wait for rain to pass, cook a meal, or use Ascend to pass through the surface from below
3. Ascend
Best for: Vertical shortcut through any solid surface above you One of TotK's most powerful abilities — lets you bypass entire sections of terrain
Ascend tricks:
- Mountain traversal: Find a rock overhang → Ascend through it to jump above the cliff
- Dungeon shortcuts: Many temple floors can be Ascended through — significant puzzle bypass potential
- Enemy fort infiltration: Ascend through the floor of a skull fortress from below — instant interior access without fighting the gate
- Mine/cave travel: Ascend through cave ceilings → emerge on surface. Great for exiting caves quickly
- Stone structures: Any stone wall, ceiling, or floor is Ascend-eligible if you're close enough
4. Recall
Best for: Reversing object movement for platforms and problem-solving Also useful for traversal:
- Recall ascending platform: If a rock or platform fell nearby, Recall it → reverse-travel upward by standing on it
- Recall enemy projectile: Enemy throws a boulder → Recall it mid-flight and jump on top as it travels back to sender
- Falling stone: Find any recent avalanche or dropped stone → Recall → instant elevator
5. Ultrahand (Movement Applications)
- Build a bridge: Ultrahand a log or plank across a gap → walk across
- Platform creation: Any flat surface can become a floating platform (throw it off a cliff → Recall → ride it up)
- Construct a ladder: Stack Ultrahand-moved objects vertically to create a climbable structure
Transportation Modes
Horse
Best for: Long ground travel on flat terrain Speed: Fast on roads; normal off-road Access: Register at any stable, summon from any subsequent stable
Horse tricks:
- Horse jumping: Horses can jump small obstacles — hold forward + tap B at the edge
- Mountain horses: Not useful on steep terrain. Dismount and climb.
- Horse with Zonai attachment: Horses can pull wagons with Ultrahand — useful for mass item transport in early game
Hoverbike (Zonai)
Best for: All terrain — fastest transit once Autobuild is unlocked Build: 2× Fan + Steering Stick → save to Autobuild → instant recall anywhere
Hoverbike advantages over horse:
- Works over water, mountains, the Depths (with lighting), and the sky
- No terrain restriction
- Battery-limited but rechargeable via Zonai device supply
Boat (Zonai)
Best for: Large water bodies (Lake Hylia, Zora's Domain, Faron coast) Build: Raft platform + 2× Fan (rear-facing) + Steering Stick
Walking/Sprinting
When to use: Short distances, caves, indoor areas where vehicles don't fit Efficiency upgrade: Hasty Elixir (Hightail Lizard + monster part) = speed boost. Combine with Snowquill Night Speed bonus for maximum foot speed.
Region-Specific Traversal
Mountains (Hebra, Eldin, Akkala Highlands)
- Find a tower or tall cliff with a west-facing slope (updraft side)
- Paraglide up the updraft with Tulin assist
- At peak altitude: shift to hoverbike for horizontal transit
- Repeat for continuous mountain-to-mountain travel
Underground/Depths
- Drop into any chasm entrance
- Hoverbike through the Depths (carry Brightbloom Seeds for visibility)
- Ascend through the ceiling at your destination to emerge on the surface
- Depths shortcut: Travel underground is often faster than surface routes for crossing mountains
Gerudo Desert
- Sand seals for quick desert transit (hold a shield, sand seal pulls you)
- Hoverbike above the sand (avoids Molduga encounter zones)
- Lightning warning: Equip Desert Voe or Rubber Armor during storms — lightning prevents combat otherwise
Water (Lanayru, Zora's Domain)
- Zora Armor: Swim faster + swim up waterfalls
- Boat: Build or recall hoverbike (hovers over water too)
- Cryonis equivalent (TotK): Ice Fruit on ground creates ice surface — walk on water briefly
Fast Travel Network Optimization
Fast travel is your most powerful traversal tool:
Priority shrine activation by region:
- Lookout Landing Shrine (auto-activated)
- One shrine per region hub (Kakariko, Hateno, Rito Village, Goron City, Gerudo Town, Tarrey Town)
- Shrines near each dungeon entrance
- Fill in regional gaps with Sensor+ shrine hunting
Travel Medallion: Places one custom fast travel point anywhere. Use it at your most-visited farming location (Blood Moon farming spot, Lynel circuit, Zonaite cave). See Fast Travel Guide.
Quick Tips
- Ascend is underused — most players use it only when the game forces them to. It's actually a universal shortcut tool for any solid surface above you.
- Tulin Gust + high altitude = infinite gliding — the combination of a high launch point and chained Tulin Gusts makes the paraglider effectively limitless.
- Hoverbike saves everything — once you have it saved in Autobuild, your mental model of "how to get there" becomes: launch from nearby tower → hoverbike → done.
- Depths as shortcut highway — traveling underground in the Depths is often faster than navigating surface terrain. Drop in from a chasm, travel underground, Ascend out at the destination.
- Sand seal in Gerudo — grabbing a sand seal while holding a shield is one of the most underrated speed boosts in the early game. Fast, fun, and free.
