Horriblin Locations Guide — Cave Ceiling Enemies

Horribleins are the cave-dwelling enemies of Tears of the Kingdom — humanoid monsters that cling to cave ceilings and walls, dropping on Link when he passes below. Unlike most enemies, they begin combat from above, requiring upward awareness in cave exploration. They come in 4 color tiers and have specific wall-climbing movement that changes how you approach the fight.

Horriblin Tiers

| Color | HP | Special | First Location | |-------|----|---------|---------------| | Red | 80 | Basic drop attack | Caves around Great Sky Island | | Blue | 160 | Faster, multi-drop | Mid-game caves | | Black | 320 | Rock throw, ground slam | Post-dungeon caves | | Silver | 600 | All abilities, elite | Blood Moon scaling, deep caves |

Wall-Climbing Mechanic

Horribleins walk on ceilings and walls using suction cup hands. They:

  1. Crawl across ceilings looking for targets below
  2. Drop-attack when Link is directly beneath them
  3. Return to ceiling after taking damage (if not killed)
  4. Throw rocks while clinging to the wall (Blue+ variants)

Knocking them down:

  • Bow shot while they're on the wall — any direct hit staggers them off the ceiling
  • Bomb below them — explosion knockdown
  • Ultrahand to grab a rock and throw at their position on the ceiling
  • Ascending through the floor they're standing on — Ascend through rock below them and hit them from above as you emerge

Where to Find Horribleins

| Location | Variants | Notes | |----------|---------|-------| | Hyrule Castle Caves | Black, Silver | Underground passages | | Tabantha Caves | Red, Blue | West Tabantha bridge caves | | Gerudo Cave network | Blue, Black | Multiple cave entrances in Gerudo Highland | | Lanayru Caves | Red, Blue | Near East Lanayru waterways | | Depths cave sections | Blue, Black | Near mining outpost passages | | Akkala Citadel tunnels | Black | Inside citadel underground | | Mountain caves | All | Any large cave throughout Hyrule |

Combat Strategy

Standard Engagement

  1. Spot them before they spot you — look up when entering caves; the visual crawling motion is distinctive
  2. Shoot immediately — bow shot before they begin their drop prevents the drop-attack entirely
  3. Rush after the knockdown — 2-3 hit burst before they return to ceiling

When They Reach the Ground

If a Horriblin reaches the ground (after being knocked off or voluntarily dropping):

  • They fight like slightly faster Bokoblins
  • Standard flurry rush timing applies (3-hit combo → backflip on 3rd hit)
  • They return to ceiling when damaged — keep pressure to prevent this

Cave Group Encounters

In caves with multiple Horribleins, prioritize:

  1. The one closest to you on the ceiling (drop-attack imminent)
  2. Then work from closest to farthest

Area-of-effect opener: In caves, a bomb tossed at the ceiling drops all Horribleins in the blast radius simultaneously — creating a brief window where multiple grounded Horribleins can be hit at once.

Silver Horriblin — Elite Strategy

Silver Horribleins are the hardest cave enemy in the game (excluding bosses):

  • Rock throw from ceiling fires 3 rocks in rapid succession — dodge all three (lateral rolls)
  • Ground slam on landing creates a shockwave — jump to avoid
  • Faster ceiling return — they can re-attach to the ceiling 40% faster than Black variants

Best approach:

  1. Bomb Arrow to ceiling surface directly next to them — AOE knocks them off before they see you
  2. Rush immediately during fall (they can't defend while falling)
  3. Heavy weapon with high-damage fuse — Silver Horriblin has no weak point, only raw DPS

Drops

| Drop | Use | |------|-----| | Horriblin Horn | Fuse material — medium damage bonus | | Horriblin Claw | Fuse material — adds climbing ability bonus | | Blue Horriblin Horn | Better damage bonus; Great Fairy material | | Silver Horriblin Horn | Best fuse bonus from Horriblin line |

Special use: Horriblin Claw fused to a weapon gives it a slight climbing speed bonus — niche but genuine for players building a climbing-focused combat style.

Best Farming Route

For Horriblin material farming:

  1. Tabantha Caves — 3 Red/Blue Horribleins per cave, 4 cave entrances accessible from Tabantha Bridge area
  2. Akkala Citadel tunnels — 4 Black Horribleins in the underground passage
  3. Blood Moon respawn — all cave enemies including Horribleins reset after Blood Moon

Per-route yield: 8–12 Horriblin Horns, 3–5 Horriblin Claws per full cave sweep.

Tips

  • Always look up first — Horribleins aren't listed on the map; your only warning is the visual of them moving overhead
  • Caves are dark — carry Brightbloom Seeds; they illuminate the ceiling, making Horriblin spotting trivial
  • Ascend is strong here — the Ascend ability is uniquely powerful against Horribleins since you can come from below them through the ceiling
  • Combat synergy — Horribleins that fall into water are immediately vulnerable (they can't climb wet surfaces); position combat near water hazards where possible
  • Shield when entering — equip your shield on cave entry; the first Horriblin drop attack comes fast and shield absorption prevents the stagger
