Hylian Set — Your First Real Armor

The Hylian armor set is the entry-level upgrade from Link's default outfit in Tears of the Kingdom. It's sold at armor shops in Hateno Village and provides solid early-game defense without any elemental resistances. For new players, it's the first recommended armor investment before exploring beyond the Great Sky Island.

The Hylian set has no elemental resistance or set bonus. Its value is purely defensive — 9 total defense vs the default outfit's 4 is a meaningful early-game upgrade.

A ★★ Hylian set (24 total defense) remains competitive through mid-game. Full ★★★★ gives 60 total defense — still below specialized sets but strong as a general-purpose option.

When to Use the Hylian Set

Use Hylian Set when:

• Exploring generic overworld areas with mixed enemy types
• No specific elemental threat present
• Early game before specialized sets are available
• Farming common enemies where set bonuses don't matter

Replace with specialized sets when:

• Entering cold areas (Cold Resistance needed — Snowquill set)
• Entering desert (Heat Resistance — Desert Voe set)
• Attempting shrines requiring stealth (Stealth set)
• Fighting Lynels (Attack Up set — Barbarian or Ancient Hero)

The Hylian set shines in the early-to-mid game (the first 10–20 hours). It's outclassed by specialized sets for endgame content but is an excellent transitional armor before you've unlocked region-specific gear.

At base level, Hylian, Soldier, and most regional sets have the same defense. The Hylian set's advantage is its availability — it's one of the cheapest and easiest sets to acquire at game start.

Tips

• Buy it immediately when you reach Hateno — 210 Rupees is easily earned from early Bokoblin camps and ore deposits
• Upgrade with Amber — Amber is common early (mine ore veins, sell extra Opals for Amber at shops) and the Hylian set's ★★ upgrade stays relevant for 15+ hours
• Dye it at Hateno Dye Shop — the Hylian set can be dyed any color at Kochi Dye Shop right next to the armor shop, for 20 Rupees per color per piece
• Don't neglect other sets — the Hylian set is a starting point, not a destination. As you unlock Great Fairies and region-specific sets, transition accordingly
