Lake Hylia Guide — Hyrule's Central Lake

Lake Hylia is TotK's largest surface water body — a sprawling lake in south-central Hyrule connecting multiple regions. It holds shrines on its shores and islands, underwater chests along the lake floor, rare fish including Hearty Salmon, and bridges with hidden Korok puzzles. This guide covers the full lake and how to explore it.

Location and Access

Location: South-central Hyrule, between the Faron region and West Necluda

Access routes:

  • South from Hyrule Field (road from Lookout Landing → south → lake)
  • East from Gerudo Highlands (cross the mountains)
  • North from Faron (river connection)

Skyview Tower: Lake Tower (on the lake's western shore) — activate for lake region map

Lake Hylia Overview

Size: One of the largest water bodies in the game — swimming across takes 2–3 minutes.

Depth: The lake has multiple depth levels. Some areas are shallow; others drop to 20+ meters.

Water speed: Current is mild (unlike rivers). Swimming is consistent in all directions.

Why explore here:

  • Underwater chests along the lake floor
  • Hearty Salmon spawn in deep cold sections
  • Shrines on shore and islands
  • Korok puzzles on bridge structures
  • Interesting terrain features visible only from above (hoverbike)

Shrines

| Shrine | Location | Notes | |--------|---------|-------| | Kisinona Shrine | East shore | Observation platform puzzle | | Mayaotaki Shrine | West shore | Construction challenge | | Ukouh Shrine | Island in center-north | Ultrahand mechanics |

Island shrine access: The center island shrine requires either swimming (long) or hoverbike. Hoverbike is recommended — land directly on the island.

Underwater Exploration

Zora Armor for swimming: The Zora Armor set (from Zora's Domain questline) dramatically increases swimming speed and allows swimming up waterfalls. Highly recommended for Lake Hylia exploration.

Sidon's Ability: Sidon's sage ability (water barrier on the right trigger) can be used while swimming — it doesn't propel you but the barrier works underwater.

Underwater chests:

Several chests sit on the lake floor:

  • Southwest corner of the lake — 2 chests near the lake bottom
  • Near the central island — 1 chest embedded in the lakebed
  • East shore underwater — 1–2 chests near the cliff base

Depth to find them: 10–20 meters below the surface. Swim down from the surface using Zora Armor's enhanced dive.

Hearty Salmon Fishing

Hearty Salmon are one of TotK's best cooking ingredients — they give Yellow Hearts when cooked.

Spawn locations in Lake Hylia:

  • Deep cold sections of the lake (northwest portion near the shadow of the mountains)
  • Near underwater rocky formations
  • Rivers flowing INTO the lake from the Lanayru direction

Fishing method:

  1. Approach the lake slowly (don't sprint into the water — fish flee)
  2. Crouch at the water's edge → spot the Hearty Salmon (orange-red fish with heart markings)
  3. Use Ultrahand to grab the fish (water doesn't block Ultrahand range)
  4. Grab them before they flee

Alternative: Cook fish in a campfire located right at the lakeshore → the smell doesn't seem to alert fish further away.

Yield: 2–6 Hearty Salmon per Lake Hylia visit.

Bridge Structures and Koroks

Lake Hylia has two major bridges:

Lake Hylia Bridge (south): Long stone bridge crossing the lake's southern section

  • 3–4 Korok puzzles embedded in the bridge structure
  • Acorn Korok (find the acorn on the bridge piling)
  • Rock puzzle (move the out-of-place rock)
  • Pinwheel puzzle (shoot the balloons)

North lake bridge: Smaller, connects to the east shore

  • 1–2 Koroks
  • Often has a Bokoblin camp at one end (clear first, explore after)

Sky Islands Above Lake Hylia

Several sky island formations float above Lake Hylia:

Lake Hylia Sky Islands:

  • Accessible via hoverbike from the Skyview Tower launch
  • Contain Steward Constructs with Zonai Charges
  • Some contain unique chests not reachable from the lake level
  • One sky island has a Zonai dispenser (Fans or Wings often dispensed here)

Crash landing is safe: If your hoverbike battery runs out above the lake → you fall into the lake → no fall damage. The lake acts as a safety net for aerial exploration in this region.

Key Resources Near Lake Hylia

Ore deposits: Rocky shores and underwater walls have Amber and Opal deposits.

Spicy Pepper (cold): The north lake shore (mountain-adjacent) gets cold at night. Spicy Peppers grow near the shore there.

Chuchu Jelly: Ice Chuchus spawn in the cold north sections of the lake. Their Ice Chuchu Jelly is useful for ice arrow fuse.

Water Octoroks: Found in the lake — they inhale → spit rocks. Parry the rock → it deals massive damage to the Octorok. They also have a weapon repair mechanic: get a weapon to maximum durability loss → toss it to the Octorok → it eats it → spits it back restored (full durability + removes Fuse).

Quick Tips

  • Zora Armor for the lake — Lake Hylia without Zora Armor is a slow, stamina-intensive exploration experience. With Zora Armor, swimming is fast and the lake's full extent becomes accessible. Get the armor from Zora's Domain before extensive Lake Hylia exploration.
  • Hoverbike = safety net above the lake — unlike the Gerudo Desert or Eldin, flying over Lake Hylia with a battery-draining hoverbike is low-risk. If the battery dies → you land in water → no damage. Practice aerial maneuvers here.
  • Water Octorok weapon repair — drop your most damaged weapon into a Water Octorok's suction. It eats it, you fight the Octorok, it dies and spits out the weapon restored to full durability. A hidden weapon repair mechanic only available here and at a few other Octorok locations.
  • Southwest corner for underwater chests — the densest chest cluster is in the southwest section of the lake, 15–20 meters below the surface. Swim straight down from the southwest shore to find them.
  • Night fishing for Hearty Salmon — Hearty Salmon are slightly easier to spot at night (their orange color contrasts with the dark water). Fish by moonlight for better spotting.
