Master Sword Guide — How to Get and Awaken the Blade

The Master Sword is the most iconic weapon in Tears of the Kingdom and the only blade that regenerates instead of breaking permanently. It is embedded in the head of the Light Dragon high above Hyrule, and pulling it free requires significant stamina investment. Once obtained, it becomes your most versatile and reliable weapon for the entire game.

Finding the Light Dragon

The Master Sword is lodged in the forehead of the Light Dragon — a massive golden serpentine dragon that circles Hyrule at extreme altitude on a roughly 40-minute real-time loop. The Light Dragon is distinct from the three elemental dragons (Dinraal, Naydra, Farosh) by its brilliant golden scales and luminous white markings.

Unlocking the Dragon's Map Path

Complete the "Recovering the Hero's Sword" quest by visiting the Deku Tree in Korok Forest. After this, the Light Dragon's flight path appears permanently on your map, making interception straightforward.

For the full story context, collect all 12 Dragon's Tears (geoglyph memories) before pulling the sword. The memories reveal the Light Dragon's true identity and make the moment narratively complete.

How to Reach the Dragon

  • Skyview Towers: Launch from towers along the dragon's path. Lindor's Brow and Thyphlo Ruins towers offer the best intercept angles.
  • Sky Islands: Use high-altitude sky island chains as launch platforms. The Great Sky Island chain provides excellent altitude.
  • Recall on debris: Cast Recall on falling sky debris to ride it upward, then paraglide to the dragon.
  • Zonai Rockets: Attach rockets to a platform, ride it to extreme height, and glide to the dragon from above.

Tip: Land on the dragon's broad mid-section first, then walk forward along the spine toward the head. The dragon does not attack you — take your time.

Stamina Requirement

Pulling the Master Sword drains approximately 1.75 full stamina wheels. You need at minimum two full green stamina wheels (10 stamina upgrades from Goddess Statues) to have a safe margin.

| Stamina | Result | |---------|--------| | 1.5 wheels | Will fail — Link collapses | | 2.0 wheels (minimum) | Tight margin — succeeds with ~0.25 wheels remaining | | 2.5 wheels | Comfortable margin |

Supplementing with Endura Food

Temporary yellow stamina from Endura Carrots counts toward the pull. Cook five Endura Carrots together for maximum temporary stamina. Combined with even 1.5 green wheels, this is enough to pull the sword early.

Tip: Eat the Endura meal immediately before initiating the pull. Bonus stamina drains passively, so do not eat and then walk around the dragon.

Damage Values and Power States

The Master Sword has a base attack power of 30 that doubles in specific circumstances.

| Condition | Attack Power | |-----------|-------------| | Normal state | 30 | | Near Gloom / Demon King presence | 60 (blade glows blue) | | Fused with Silver Lynel Saber Horn | 85 (30 + 55) | | Powered up + Fused with Saber Horn | 115 (60 + 55) |

When the Sword Powers Up

The Master Sword automatically enters its 60-attack glowing state when Link is near significant Gloom:

  • The Depths (Gloom is pervasive underground)
  • Hyrule Castle interior
  • Gloom Hands encounters
  • Phantom Ganon fights
  • The final boss sequence against the Demon King

This makes the Master Sword the single best weapon for Depths exploration — you effectively carry a permanent 60-attack blade underground.

Master Sword Beam

At full hearts, swinging the Master Sword fires a projectile beam at no durability cost. Use it freely to handle weak enemies at range without consuming sword charges.

Cooldown Mechanics

When the Master Sword's durability depletes, it enters a 10-minute real-time cooldown instead of breaking. During cooldown:

  • The sword is grayed out in your inventory and cannot be equipped
  • The timer counts down even while in menus (but not if the game is fully closed)
  • After 10 minutes, the sword returns at full durability with any fused material intact

Durability Details

The Master Sword has 40 durability points in normal state. Each standard hit consumes 1 point. Charged spin attacks consume durability per hit in the spin sequence. The sword beam (at full hearts) does not consume durability.

Tip: When durability is low, switch to a backup weapon to preserve remaining Master Sword hits for high-value encounters. Save it for Gloom enemies where the doubled damage matters most.

Best Fuse Combinations

You can fuse materials to the Master Sword like any weapon. When durability runs out, the fused material persists through the cooldown cycle — expensive fuse materials are never lost.

| Fuse Material | Total Attack (Normal) | Total Attack (Powered) | Notes | |---------------|----------------------|----------------------|-------| | Silver Lynel Saber Horn | 85 | 115 | Best overall — highest one-hand damage | | Silver Lynel Mace Horn | 84 | 114 | Slightly less but easier to farm | | Gleeok Wing | 64 | 94 | Ranged wind effect on swing | | Light Dragon's Scale | 46 | 76 | Thematic but modest power | | Diamond | 55 | 85 | Mid-game solid option |

Recommended Fuse Strategy

  1. Early game: Fuse a Captain Construct Horn (+20) or strong monster horn until you can farm Lynels
  2. Mid game: Fuse a Blue-Maned Lynel Saber Horn (+45) after your first Lynel kill
  3. Late game: Fuse a Silver Lynel Saber Horn (+55) for maximum output

Recommended Progression Strategy

  1. Prioritize stamina upgrades early — choose stamina over hearts at Goddess Statues until you have 2+ wheels
  2. Visit Korok Forest to trigger the Deku Tree quest and unlock the Light Dragon's map path
  3. Collect Dragon's Tears for full story context (optional but recommended)
  4. Cook Endura meals as stamina insurance before the pull
  5. Pull the sword — eat Endura food at the hilt, then hold without releasing
  6. Fuse the best horn you have immediately after obtaining it
  7. Reserve the Master Sword for Gloom encounters where the 60-attack power-up activates

Connection to the True Ending

Pulling the Master Sword is required for the complete true ending. The final cutscene after defeating Ganondorf depends on the story thread established when you claim the sword from the Light Dragon. Players who skip the Master Sword see an incomplete resolution.

For maximum narrative impact, complete the Dragon's Tears quest line, pull the Master Sword, and then proceed to the final boss.
