Phantom Armor Guide — Depths Labyrinths & High Defense

The Phantom Armor set replicates Ganondorf's Demon King appearance — a striking dark armor with high defense stats. All 3 pieces are hidden in Depths labyrinths (the underground mirror of the surface labyrinths). This guide covers every chest location and whether the Phantom set is worth pursuing over other options.

What Phantom Armor Does

Per piece: High base defense — one of the highest base defense values of any armor in TotK Set bonus at ★★: Attack Up — adds a damage bonus on top of the defensive stats Unique trait: Cannot be upgraded at Great Fairy fountains — the armor is fixed at its base stats

Important limitation: Phantom Armor cannot be upgraded. This makes it less appealing for endgame (upgraded Soldier's Armor or Barbarian Armor outperforms it). The Phantom set's value is its base defense — it's strong mid-game without needing upgrade materials.

Phantom Armor Locations — Depths Labyrinths

The 3 Phantom Armor pieces are in the underground versions of the same 3 labyrinths that hold Barbarian Armor on the surface. Enter via the chasm at each labyrinth or the corresponding surface labyrinth entry.

Northeast Depths Labyrinth — Phantom Helm

Access:

  1. Enter the Northeast Labyrinth chasm (same location as the surface Northeast Labyrinth, Akkala region)
  2. Or: enter the Northeast surface labyrinth and drop into a chasm inside the maze

Inside the Depths:

  • The labyrinth layout mirrors the surface but inverted-color Depths aesthetic
  • Gloom is present — bring Sundelion meals or Brightbloom Seeds
  • The Phantom Helm chest is in the interior chamber — same position as the surface Barbarian Helm chest but underground

Navigation: Same right-hand-rule applies. The interior chamber is at the maze center.

Northwest Depths Labyrinth — Phantom Armor (Chest Piece)

Access:

  1. Drop into the Northwest Labyrinth chasm (Northwest Hyrule, north of Eldin)
  2. Or: enter the surface Northwest Labyrinth and find the chasm inside

Inside the Depths:

  • Lighter Gloom concentration than deeper Depths areas
  • Some Gloom-covered floor sections — step carefully or clear Gloom with Brightbloom Seeds
  • The chest is at the interior of the maze

South Depths Labyrinth — Phantom Greaves

Access:

  1. Drop into the South Labyrinth chasm (South Hyrule, Necluda/Faron border)
  2. Or: enter the surface South Labyrinth and find the interior chasm

Inside the Depths:

  • Warmest of the three environments (no cold damage concern)
  • Standard Depths navigational challenge — bring Brightbloom Seeds for visibility
  • The Phantom Greaves chest is in the interior chamber

Navigating Depths Labyrinths

The Depths versions of the labyrinths are darker and have Gloom hazards, but follow the same layout logic:

Key tips:

  • Brightbloom Seeds — throw them ahead to illuminate dark corridors
  • Right-hand rule — works in the Depths versions same as surface
  • Aerial shortcut — if you can get above the labyrinth walls in the Depths (Ascend through the ceiling in certain areas), you can see the layout from above
  • Gloom management — carry 5+ Sundelion meals before entering any Depths labyrinth

Phantom Armor vs Other Armor Sets

| Armor | Base Defense | Upgradeable | Set Bonus | |-------|-------------|-------------|-----------| | Phantom Armor | High | No | Attack Up (★★) | | Soldier's Armor | Medium | Yes (to ★★★★) | — | | Barbarian Armor | Low-Medium | Yes (to ★★★★) | Charge Attack Stamina | | Royal Guard | Highest base | Yes | — |

Verdict:

  • Early-mid game: Phantom Armor is excellent — high defense without needing upgrade materials
  • Late game: Upgraded Soldier's Armor (★★★★) or upgraded Barbarian Armor (★★★★) outperforms Phantom Armor since they can be upgraded
  • Aesthetic use: Many players wear Phantom Armor for its Ganondorf visual theme

Collecting All 3 — Efficient Route

Recommended order (minimizes backtracking):

  1. Northeast Depths Labyrinth (Phantom Helm) — start from Tarrey Town area → drop into the Akkala chasm
  2. Northwest Depths Labyrinth (Phantom Armor) — travel west underground or return to surface and approach from Eldin
  3. South Depths Labyrinth (Phantom Greaves) — drop south through the Central Hyrule Depths toward Necluda

Alternative: Do surface labyrinths first (Barbarian Armor pieces), then drop into the underground from each labyrinth's interior chasm — efficient double-dip that gets both surface and underground armor pieces per labyrinth visit.

Complementing Phantom Armor

Since Phantom Armor can't be upgraded, consider pairing it with other gear:

Best pairing setups:

  • Phantom Helm + Barbarian Armor + Barbarian Tights — mix chest armor for attack bonus while keeping Phantom's high helm defense
  • Full Phantom set — use the set bonus Attack Up at ★★ (flat ★★ means they come at that level from the chest — no Great Fairy needed)
  • Phantom Greaves + Soldier's Armor top — high legs defense + upgradeable upper body

Quick Tips

  • No Great Fairy needed — Phantom Armor bypasses the upgrade system entirely. If you haven't unlocked Great Fairies yet, this is the best way to get strong armor quickly.
  • Depths labyrinth = Depths first-time challenge — the first time you enter a Depths labyrinth, have 5 Brightbloom Seeds and 3 Sundelion meals minimum. It's easy if prepared.
  • Do both labyrinths per visit — when you go to a labyrinth chasm, clear both the surface labyrinth (Barbarian Armor) AND the Depths labyrinth (Phantom Armor) in one trip.
  • Phantom set is NOT the final armor — don't over-invest in trying to "improve" the set. It's excellent at base but gets outscaled. Use it until you can fully upgrade alternatives.
