Sage's Will Guide — Upgrading Sage Abilities

Sage's Wills are collectible orbs that upgrade the five Sage abilities in Tears of the Kingdom. Each Will is a physical item found primarily on Sky Islands, hidden in treasure chests or guarded by enemies. Collecting Sage's Wills and visiting each Sage's shrine location allows you to permanently strengthen Tulin's Gust, Sidon's Shield, Yunobo's Roll, Riju's Lightning, and Mineru's Construct.

How Sage's Wills Work

1. Find Sage's Wills — Scattered across Sky Islands, some Depths locations, and rare overworld chests
2. Visit the upgrade location — Each Sage has a unique upgrade location (their associated shrine or meeting point)
3. Exchange Wills for ability upgrades — Spend Wills to increase ability power/duration
4. No per-Sage restriction — Any Sage's Will can be applied to any Sage's ability (they are universal currency)

Total Sage's Wills in the game: 20 (community-verified count) Wills per upgrade tier: Each upgrade costs 4 Sage's Wills

Maximum upgrades available: 4 upgrades per Sage × 5 Sages = 20 total upgrades But: Only 20 Wills exist, so you must choose which Sages to fully upgrade first

Each Sage ability has 4 upgrade tiers, each costing 4 Sage's Wills:

Sage Ability Upgrades — What Changes

Tulin (Wind)

• Base: Short wind gust that propels Link forward
• Tier 2: Longer gust range, faster activation
• Tier 3: Double gust per activation (two bursts)
• Tier 4: Persistent wind current — Tulin maintains wind support during paraglide

Best for: Long-distance paragliding, sky island traversal, aerial combat

Sidon (Water Shield)

• Base: Water shield absorbs one hit
• Tier 2: Shield persists longer before fading
• Tier 3: Shield absorbs two hits
• Tier 4: Water shield grants Flurry Rush window on break

Best for: Survivability in tough fights, Water Temple encounters, Sludge combat

Yunobo (Rolling Strike)

• Base: One rolling strike per activation
• Tier 2: Faster roll initiation
• Tier 3: Roll penetrates through enemies (hits multiple targets)
• Tier 4: Charged roll — hold activation for a wider-radius explosion on impact

Best for: Rock-armor enemies (Marbled Gohma, Igneo Talus), camp clearing

Riju (Lightning)

• Base: One lightning strike at targeted area
• Tier 2: Larger strike radius
• Tier 3: Double strike (two simultaneous bolts)
• Tier 4: Area lightning storm — multiple strikes around Link for 5 seconds

Best for: Gibdo swarms, Thunder Gleeok, Queen Gibdo boss, flying enemies

Mineru (Construct)

• Base: Standard construct combat abilities
• Tier 2: Increased construct HP
• Tier 3: Additional construct weapons attachment slot
• Tier 4: Construct self-repair ability — auto-heals to 50% when critically damaged

Best for: Spirit Temple area, Depths exploration with construct combat, late-game boss fights

Where to Find Sage's Wills

Sage's Wills are found in:

• Sky Island treasure chests — The primary source; approximately 15 of 20 Wills are on Sky Islands
• Depths treasure chests — A few are in the Depths near Lightroots
• Overworld ruins — Rare; a few are in elevated ancient ruins accessible only by sky vehicle

Sky Island Locations by Region

North Sky Islands (above Akkala/Eldin)

• Island directly above the Eldin Canyon Skyview Tower — Chest guarded by a Captain Construct
• Remote island east of the Eldin sky cluster — Plain chest on a small platform

West Sky Islands (above Tabantha/Hyrule Ridge)

• Above Lindor's Brow Skyview Tower, the large island cluster — Flux Construct I guards the Sage's Will chest
• Small floating island visible from Tabantha Bridge — Paraglide northwest from the tower

South Sky Islands (above Faron/Necluda)

• Above the Rabella Wetlands Skyview Tower, the island chain continues south — chest at the chain's endpoint
• Dragon Head Island (large sky island above Faron) — inside the dragon-shaped rock formation

East Sky Islands (above Lanayru)

• Above Zora's Domain — accessible by launching from the Upland Zorana Skyview Tower
• Lanayru sky archipelago — Chest on the outermost island of the chain

Central Sky (above Central Hyrule)

• Great Sky Island (tutorial area) — revisit after gaining all abilities for hidden chest
• Sky platform above Hyrule Castle — accessible from castle battlements

Depths Locations

• Near the Abandoned Central Mine — in a chest guarded by Gold Construct
• Near the regional Lightroots — check the surrounding area of major Lightroots for small treasure alcoves

Priority Upgrade Recommendations

With only 20 Wills for 20 possible upgrades, choose strategically:

Best value upgrades (in order):

1. Tulin Tier 2 (4 Wills) — Double gust transforms sky island traversal. Pay for this first.
2. Riju Tier 2 (4 Wills) — Larger lightning radius makes Gibdo encounters and Queen Gibdo dramatically easier.
3. Sidon Tier 3 (8 Wills) — Two-hit shield is a game-changer for survivability in boss fights.
4. Yunobo Tier 3 (8 Wills) — Multi-target roll is essential if you fight lots of Construct or rock-armored enemies.

Save Mineru upgrades for last — The Construct is powerful by default and you'll use the Construct primarily in the Spirit Temple and nearby areas. Tulin and Riju upgrades are universally valuable.

Tips

• Use Tulin's Gust to reach remote Sage's Will islands — many Will locations require chained paragliding. Upgrade Tulin first with early-game Wills you find naturally.
• Sage's Wills glow with a pale blue light — visible from a distance on Sky Islands.
• Check under Sky Island platforms — Some Will chests are on the underside of islands, accessible via Ascend from below.
• Prioritize Sage upgrades before the final boss — Fully upgraded Sage abilities significantly change the difficulty of the Demon King fight.
