Weather Guide — Rain, Lightning, Cold, Heat & How to Use Each
Weather Guide — Every Weather System Explained
TotK's weather isn't just cosmetic. Rain slows climbing, lightning kills you on metal terrain, cold kills Link above certain altitudes, and heat kills Link in the desert. Each system has counters — and each can be exploited for combat and traversal advantages. This guide covers all of it.
Rain
What Rain Does
- Climbing penalty: Rock faces become slippery — stamina drains 50% faster, jump-climbs feel sluggish
- Fire extinguishing: Fire Arrows, flame weapons, and campfires are extinguished by rain
- Swimming: Rain has no effect on swimming speed or diving
- Paraglider: Rain doesn't affect Paraglider performance
- Stealth: Rain noise masks some of Link's footstep sounds (minor stealth bonus)
Rain Regions
| Region | Rain Frequency | |--------|---------------| | Faron | Very frequent — often raining | | Lanayru coast | Moderate — rain events | | Central Hyrule fields | Moderate — passes quickly | | Gerudo Desert | Almost never (dry climate) | | Hebra | Snow instead of rain |
Dealing with Rain
Wait it out: Sleep at any campfire (or portable pot) until the weather changes. Most rain events last 5–10 in-game minutes (1–2 real minutes).
Push through: With Climbing Gear at ★★, the rain penalty drops from 50% to ~25% — manageable.
Ascend instead: Ascend ability lets you phase through cave ceilings and cliff overhangs — bypasses rain-affected climbing entirely.
Use rain offensively:
- Electric arrows near rain-soaked enemies do chain damage
- Shock Fruit arrows hit one enemy in water, chain to all nearby wet enemies
- Lynel fights in rain = electric weapons are extra deadly
Lightning Storms
What Lightning Does
Lightning strikes the highest metal object in a 50m radius near Link. If Link is holding metal weapons, wearing metal armor, or standing next to metal objects:
- Lightning strikes Link → instant 2–3 heart damage + paralysis stagger
Lightning Safety Rules
- Drop metal weapons when you see the purple storm clouds (hit ZL → drop weapon)
- Don't run with metal weapons in open fields during storms
- Wooden weapons are safe — lightning won't target them
- Climbing inside a cave during storms = 100% safe
Lightning as a Combat Tool
Metal weapons = lightning rods. You can:
- Drop a metal weapon near enemies — lightning strikes it, chains to nearby enemies
- Place a pile of metal Fused debris in an enemy camp during a storm — all enemies in range take lightning damage
- Throw your metal weapon TOWARD enemy groups — if it lands near them during a storm, they get struck
Silver Moblin strategy: Metal Moblin horns fused to arrows, fired at a cluster, become multiple lightning rods during a storm. One storm = entire camp eliminated.
Cold & Freezing
Cold Damage Zones
TotK has 3 cold tiers:
- Tier 1 Cold: Mild cold — Rito area, lower Hebra, Mt. Lanayru lower slopes. No damage unless standing still for extended time. Spicy Pepper (raw) handles this.
- Tier 2 Cold: Moderate cold — upper Hebra, Lanayru snowfields, Death Mountain peaks at night. Deals periodic heart damage. Requires Tier 1 cold resistance (Snowquill armor or Spicy food).
- Tier 3 Cold (Extreme): High-altitude Hebra peaks, deep winter storms. Damages Link even with Tier 1 protection. Requires Tier 2 cold resistance (upgraded Snowquill or strong Spicy recipes).
Cold Resistance Sources
| Source | Resistance Tier | |--------|----------------| | Spicy Pepper (raw) | Tier 1 | | Spicy food (1–2 Sunshroom) | Tier 1 | | Spicy food (3+ Sunshroom / Warm Safflina) | Tier 2 | | Snowquill Armor (base) | Tier 1 | | Snowquill Armor (★★+) | Tier 2 | | Spicy Elixir (high potency) | Tier 2 |
Cold Advantages
- Frost weapons (Frost Fruit fused) freeze enemies in cold regions faster
- Ice-type enemies (Ice Wizzrobe, Frost Pebblit, Frost Talus) take extra fire damage in cold regions
- Cold terrain = no heat drain — climbing cold mountain faces doesn't add extra stamina drain like hot regions do
Heat & Fire
Heat Damage Zones
- Gerudo Desert daytime: Heat damage during the day. Night is safe. Requires heat resistance.
- Death Mountain approach: Above the Goron City elevation, fire damage starts. Requires Flamebreaker Armor or fireproof food.
- Volcano crater rim: Continuous fire damage even with Flamebreaker — very short survival window without maximum fire resistance.
Heat Resistance Sources
| Source | Resistance Tier | |--------|----------------| | Chilly food (1–2 Hydromelon) | Tier 1 | | Chilly food (3+ Hydromelon / Cool Safflina) | Tier 2 | | Flamebreaker Armor (base) | Tier 1 | | Flamebreaker Armor (★★+) | Tier 2 | | Fireproof Elixir | Fireproof (not heat-resist) — different mechanic |
Important: Heat Resistance and Fireproof Resistance are different:
- Heat Resistance (Chilly food, Flamebreaker) — protects from ambient volcanic/desert heat
- Fireproof (Fireproof Elixir, Flamebreaker set bonus) — prevents catching fire from fire enemy attacks
You need BOTH for Death Mountain summit: Flamebreaker armor (heat resist) + Fireproof Elixir (prevents fire-attack ignition).
Heat Combat Advantages
- Fire weapons in cold/wet areas: massive bonus damage
- Fire Fruit arrows instantly melt ice-armored enemies (Ice Lizalfos, Frost Gleeok)
- Campfire lighting in deserts: easier (no rain to extinguish)
Wind
Wind is primarily a Paraglider mechanic:
- Updrafts (upward wind columns): Launches Paraglider upward — common near cliffs, fires, and certain sky islands
- Thermal columns above campfires: Light a fire → thermal updraft rises → Paraglide up for free height
- Tulin's Gust: Sage ability creates a forward wind burst while gliding — most reliable wind traversal
- Wind in open plains: No significant gameplay effect on ground movement
Exploiting Updrafts
Campfire launch:
- Place/light a campfire (or find an existing one)
- Stand near it — an upward thermal column appears
- Open Paraglider — Link rides the thermal upward
- Free height gain without stamina cost or Zonai energy
Death Mountain thermals: The volcanic heat at Death Mountain creates natural thermals — Paraglide near volcanic vents for sustained upward draft.
Sky Island wind columns: Many sky islands have circular wind columns beneath them (Zonai infrastructure). Flying into them with Paraglider provides extra lift.
Weather Forecasting
There's no in-game weather forecast UI, but patterns are predictable:
- Rain in Faron every 5–10 minutes of real time
- Lightning storms: visible as dark purple sky in the approaching region — 30–60 seconds warning
- Cold damage zones are fixed by altitude, not weather events
- Blood Moon overrides weather: always clear red sky on Blood Moon nights
Using a campfire to skip weather: At any campfire, rest until morning/noon/evening — skips to that time of day AND changes the weather. Rest "Until Morning" on a rainy Faron day to skip the rain.
