Best Food Recipes and Meals in Tears of the Kingdom

Cooking is one of the most powerful systems in Tears of the Kingdom. The right meal transforms combat, traversal, and survival. Cooking in TotK is straightforward — throw ingredients into a cooking pot and the game calculates the result based on what you put in. But knowing which ingredients produce which effects at maximum potency is what separates surviving from thriving.

This guide covers every major meal category with the best-in-slot recipes, exact ingredient lists, and effect durations.

Cooking Basics — How the System Works

The Cooking Formula

Every meal result depends on the dominant effect ingredient in the pot. The rules:

  1. One effect per meal — the dominant effect ingredient (or the most powerful one if multiples) determines the meal's buff type
  2. More effect ingredients = higher level — stacking 3 Spicy Peppers produces a stronger cold resist than 1
  3. Effect duration ingredients — adding "duration bonus" plants (Blue Nightshade, Hightail Lizard, etc.) extends effect time
  4. Hearty/Enduring override everything — these effects ignore other buff types; Hearty meals add bonus hearts, Enduring adds yellow stamina
  5. Critical success (Lucky Cook) — random chance to cook a "critical" version with extended duration or extra hearts; cooking during a Blood Moon increases crit chance

Effect Levels

Most buffing meals come in three tiers:

  • Level 1: Mild effect (e.g., +1 attack step)
  • Level 2: Medium effect (e.g., +2 attack steps)
  • Level 3: Strong effect (e.g., +3 attack steps, maximum)

Reaching Level 3 usually requires 3–4 effect-specific ingredients.

Duration Basics

Effect durations stack additively:

  • 1 effect ingredient: ~1:30 base duration
  • 2 effect ingredients: ~2:30
  • 3 effect ingredients: ~3:30
  • 4 effect ingredients: ~4:30
  • 5 effect ingredients: ~5:30
  • Duration bonus ingredients (Dragon Horns, certain plants): +10 minutes each

Heart Recovery Meals — Best Recipes

Heart recovery meals restore Link's hearts instantly. They're your primary combat healing tool.

Hearty Durian Meal (Best Single-Ingredient Recovery)

Hearty Durian is the highest heart-recovery ingredient in the game. Each Hearty Durian fully restores all hearts AND adds 4 bonus hearts.

Best recipe — Maximum recovery: | Slot | Ingredient | Effect | |------|-----------|--------| | 1 | Hearty Durian | Restore all + 4 bonus hearts | | 2 | Hearty Durian | Additional +4 bonus hearts | | 3 | Hearty Durian | Additional +4 bonus hearts | | 4 | Hearty Durian | Additional +4 bonus hearts | | 5 | Hearty Durian | Additional +4 bonus hearts |

Result: Hearty Fried Wild Greens (or similar name) Effect: Restores ALL hearts + 20 bonus yellow hearts Note: 5× Hearty Durian is overkill but ensures maximum possible HP buffer. 3× is sufficient for most content.

Where to find Hearty Durian: Faron region, especially the orchard area south of Lurelin Village. Also sold at some shops.

Royal Hearty Salmon Meunière (Balanced Recovery)

Best mid-game recovery meal: | Slot | Ingredient | Effect | |------|-----------|--------| | 1 | Hearty Bass | Bonus hearts + recovery | | 2 | Goat Butter | Quality amplifier | | 3 | Tabantha Wheat | Quality amplifier | | 4 | Rock Salt | Quality amplifier | | 5 | Hearty Bass | Additional bonus hearts |

Result: Hearty Salmon Meunière Effect: Restores 5–8 hearts + 2–4 bonus yellow hearts Best for: Early-to-mid game when Hearty Durians are scarce

Standard Heart Recovery (Bulk Cooking)

For large quantities of heart restoration food, use abundant ingredients:

Basic Heart Restoration Meal: | Slot | Ingredient | Effect | |------|-----------|--------| | 1-5 | Hylian Shroom (5×) | Restores 2.5 hearts each |

Result: Mushroom Skewer Effect: Restores 12.5 hearts (nearly fills most players' gauges) Best for: Mass-producing cheap healing from freely farmed mushrooms

Apple-based budget meal: | Slot | Ingredient | |------|-----------| | 1-5 | Apple (5×) |

Result: Simmered Fruit Effect: Restores 5 hearts Source: Apples are everywhere — drop from trees when cut or climbed

Energizing Mushroom Skewer (Best for Stamina)

| Slot | Ingredient | Effect | |------|-----------|--------| | 1 | Stamella Shroom | Restores 1/5 stamina wheel | | 2 | Stamella Shroom | Restores 1/5 stamina wheel | | 3 | Stamella Shroom | Restores 1/5 stamina wheel | | 4 | Stamella Shroom | Restores 1/5 stamina wheel | | 5 | Stamella Shroom | Restores 1/5 stamina wheel |

Result: Energizing dish Effect: Restores ~60% stamina + partial heart recovery Note: Mixed meals recover both stamina and hearts simultaneously

Enduring Meals — Yellow Stamina Bonus

Enduring meals add yellow bonus stamina on top of your current wheel. This extra stamina depletes first and enables actions that would normally exhaust you. Essential for long climbs and swimming to distant sky islands.

Endura Shroom Skewer (Best Enduring Meal)

| Slot | Ingredient | |------|-----------| | 1 | Endura Shroom | | 2 | Endura Shroom | | 3 | Endura Shroom | | 4 | Endura Shroom | | 5 | Endura Shroom |

  • 3× Tireless Frog gives full 2-wheel bonus
  • Adding Molduga Guts/Hinox Guts as a 5th ingredient boosts sell value (if making to sell) but doesn't change yellow stamina count
  • This is the highest sell-value elixir in the game — use if farming rupees

Spicy Meals — Cold Resistance

Spicy meals provide cold resistance, allowing Link to survive in freezing environments (Hebra, high altitude, Lanayru snowfields) without cold-resistant armor.

Effect Levels

  • Level 1 (Mild Cold Resist): Survives light cold (low altitude snow)
  • Level 2 (Medium Cold Resist): Survives moderate cold (Hebra foothills, Lanayru snowfield)

Fireproof Meals — Flame Guard

Fireproof meals protect against fire damage. Essential in Death Mountain's volcanic area and Fire Temple, where the environment itself deals continuous fire damage without protection.

How Fireproof Works

Unlike other resistance meals, Fireproof prevents the "on fire" status effect entirely, not just reducing damage. Without it, the volcanic Death Mountain summit is inaccessible without Flamebreaker Armor.

Best-in-Slot Fireproof Meal

Result: Fireproof Elixir Effect: Flame Guard Level 1 (protects from moderate fire, not extreme volcanic) Duration: 4:00–6:00 minutes Note: For Fire Temple and Death Mountain summit, use Level 2 (Smotherwing Butterfly included)

Sundelion Meals — Gloom Recovery

Sundelion is the most unique ingredient in TotK. When cooked, it restores Gloom-damaged hearts — the reddish-darkened maximum hearts caused by Gloom exposure in the Depths and from Gloom Hands/Phantom Ganon encounters.

Without Sundelion meals, Gloom damage is permanent until cleared by visiting a Lightroot, sleeping at an inn, or fast-traveling to the surface.

How Gloom Hearts Work

  • Gloom exposure (Depths floor, Gloom attacks) turns hearts red-brown and permanently reduces max HP
  • Sundelion meals cleanse these darkened hearts, restoring max HP
  • Regular heart recovery food does NOT restore Gloom hearts — only Sundelion does
  • Sundelion is essential for Depths exploration

Best-in-Slot Sundelion Meal — Maximum Recovery

| Slot | Ingredient | |------|-----------| | 1 | Sundelion | | 2 | Sundelion | | 3 | Sundelion | | 4 | Sundelion | | 5 | Sundelion |

Result: Sunny Fried Wild Greens Effect: Restores all Gloom hearts + 10 bonus Gloom hearts cleared Note: 3× Sundelion is sufficient for most Depths runs; 5× is maximum insurance

Where to find Sundelion: Sky Islands — Sundelion grows almost exclusively on sky islands. Key locations:

  • Great Sky Island (starting area — abundant)
  • Various named sky islands throughout Hyrule
  • Occasionally sold at sky-adjacent vendors

Sundelion + Heart Recovery Hybrid

For maximum Depths survival, combine Sundelion with strong heart recovery:

| Slot | Ingredient | |------|-----------| | 1 | Sundelion | | 2 | Sundelion | | 3 | Sundelion | | 4 | Hearty Truffle | | 5 | Hearty Truffle |

Result: Sunny Mushroom Risotto (variant) Effect: Restores ~8 Gloom hearts + 8 regular hearts + 2 bonus yellow hearts Best for: Extended Depths sessions — handles both Gloom recovery and general HP simultaneously

Sunny Elixir (Gloom Elixir)

| Slot | Ingredient | |------|-----------| | 1 | Sundelion | | 2 | Any critter | | 3 | Any critter | | 4 | Any critter | | 5 | Any critter |

Result: Sunny Elixir Effect: Restores 1–4 Gloom hearts per Sundelion included Note: Less efficient than full Sundelion meals but useful if Sundelion supply is limited

Hearty Meals — Bonus Hearts

Hearty ingredients add yellow bonus hearts on top of Link's maximum, extending effective HP beyond the heart cap. This is different from Enduring (yellow stamina).

Best Hearty Ingredients

| Ingredient | Hearts Restored + Bonus | |-----------|------------------------| | Hearty Durian | All + 4 yellow hearts | | Hearty Truffle | All + 3 yellow hearts | | Hearty Bass | All + 2 yellow hearts | | Hearty Lizard | All + 1 yellow heart | | Hearty Radish | All + 1 yellow heart |

Maximum Hearty Meal

| Slot | Ingredient | |------|-----------| | 1 | Hearty Durian | | 2 | Hearty Durian | | 3 | Hearty Durian | | 4 | Hearty Durian | | 5 | Hearty Durian |

Result: Hearty Fried Wild Greens Effect: Restores ALL hearts + 20 bonus yellow hearts Best for: Pre-boss preparation, entering Lynel fights, Gloom Hands encounters

Where to find Hearty Durian: Faron jungle and southern Necluda; also drops from trees when climbing or cutting. High concentration south of Lake Floria.

Fairy Tonic — Universal Recovery

Fairies in their raw form provide emergency revives when Link falls in battle (automatic). But cooking Fairies creates a powerful tonic.

Fairy Tonic Recipe

| Slot | Ingredient | |------|-----------| | 1 | Fairy | | 2 | Fairy | | 3 | Fairy | | 4 | Fairy | | 5 | (optional) Fairy |

Result: Fairy Tonic Effect: Restores all hearts + small heart recovery bonus Sell value: 160 rupees per 4-Fairy tonic (excellent for selling)

Where to find Fairies: Near every Great Fairy Fountain (before and after unlocking), in certain forest caves, and sometimes sold by traveling merchants. Kakariko, Akkala, and Necluda Great Fairy areas have the best accessibility.

Best Elixirs for Combat

Pre-Boss Loadout

| Situation | Recommended Elixir | Why | |-----------|-------------------|-----| | Lynel fight | Mighty Elixir (Attack Up 3) | Maximize damage, shorter fight | | Lynel fight | Tough Elixir (Defense Up 3) | If struggling with survivability | | Fire Gleeok | Spicy Elixir (Cold Resist) | N/A; Fire Gleeok needs no resist | | Thunder Gleeok | Electro Elixir | Prevents weapon knockdown | | Ice Gleeok | Spicy Elixir (Cold Resist) | Prevents ice status | | Depths boss | Fireproof Elixir (if near fire) | Fire damage prevention | | Gloom Hands | Hearty Durian meal (pre-fight) | Extra HP buffer crucial |

Universal Combat Elixir Stack

Carry at least 5 of each for serious combat encounters:

  • 5× Mighty Elixir (Attack Up 3)
  • 5× Tough Elixir (Defense Up 3)
  • 5× Hearty Durian meal (20 bonus hearts)
  • 10× standard heart recovery meals

Cooking Tips and Tricks

Lucky Cook (Critical Cook)

Every meal has a random chance to succeed as a "Critical Cook," giving:

  • Extra hearts (recovery meals)
  • Extended duration (+~2 minutes for buff meals)

Blood Moon boost: During Blood Moon nights, the critical cook rate is significantly higher. Cook difficult/rare meals during Blood Moon for best results.

Don't Mix Effect Types

Putting two different buff ingredients in the same pot (e.g., Spicy + Mighty) cancels both effects, producing a plain recovery dish. Always keep buff ingredients of the same type together.

Exception: Duration bonus items (Dragon Horns, etc.) don't count as buff types and can be added to any meal.

Dragon Horn Duration Boost

Adding a Dragon Horn to any buff meal adds +10 minutes to the duration.

| Dragon | Horn Part | Duration Added | |--------|----------|----------------| | Dinraal | Shard of Dinraal's Horn | +10 minutes | | Naydra | Shard of Naydra's Horn | +10 minutes | | Farosh | Shard of Farosh's Horn | +10 minutes | | Light Dragon | Shard of Light Dragon's Horn | +10 minutes |

Best use: Add a Dragon Horn to a Mighty meal before a long Lynel session for 15+ minute attack boost.

Cooking Pots Location Tips

  • Every stable has a cooking pot outside
  • Lookout Landing main courtyard has a pot
  • Enemy camps with bonfires can be used after clearing the camp
  • Certain Depths rest areas have pots
  • Your house (if built) has a cooking pot

Batch Cooking Efficiency

Cook in batches of 5 identical meals to maximize pot efficiency. Don't cook single ingredients — always use all 5 slots.
