Best Horse Guide — Finding the Fastest Mounts in Hyrule

Horses are your fastest ground transport — far quicker than running, always available without stamina cost, and essential for covering Hyrule Field efficiently. But not all horses are equal. Stats vary wildly between individual horses. This guide ranks the best horse types, where to find them, and what to prioritize.

Horse Stats Explained

Each horse has four stats visible at the stable after registration:

| Stat | What It Does | Max Value | |------|-------------|-----------| | Speed | How fast the horse runs at full sprint | 5 stars | | Stamina | How many spurs (speed boosts) before tiring | 3–8 charges | | Strength | How much health the horse has (not directly shown) | — | | Pull | How well it responds to direction changes | 5 stars |

Most important stat for exploration: Speed. A 5-speed horse crosses Hyrule Field in a fraction of the time a 2-speed horse takes.

Most important for combat: Stamina. More spurs = longer sustained high-speed movement.

Best Horse Tier List

S-Tier — Best Mounts

5-Speed / High-Stamina Horses (Wild Black/Dark Colored)

  • The fastest horse type in TotK
  • 5 stars speed, 4–5 stamina charges
  • Where to find: Akkala Highlands meadows (northeast of Ulri Mountain Tower), Necluda hills, and some Hyrule Ridge meadows
  • Black horses with solid coloring or subtle markings tend to have better stats — but stats vary per individual horse even within color types
  • Tip: Check stat ratings at the stable after catching — only register horses with 5 stars speed

Giant Horse

  • The largest horse in the game — massive frame, intimidating presence
  • Stats: 5 strength, 5 stamina — but SLOW speed (1 star, cannot sprint)
  • Best for: Combat (extremely hard to knock off), walking over rough terrain, intimidation
  • Not for: Speed travel — this horse is not fast
  • Where to find: In the Taobab Grassland south of the Gerudo Plateau. A lone large horse stands out from the normal herd.

A-Tier — Strong Options

Spotted White/Brown Horses

  • Often have 4 speed, 4–5 stamina
  • Good all-around horses, easier to find than max-stat black horses
  • Widely available in Hyrule Field herds

Zelda's Golden Horse (White with white mane)

  • Obtained through a specific side quest from Haite at Snowfield Stable
  • Stats: 4 speed, 4 stamina — good but not max
  • Visual appeal: The royal white horse is iconic and beautiful
  • Requires completing a horse-retrieval quest, not just taming

B-Tier — Functional

Standard Field Horses (3 speed)

  • Available everywhere from the first hour
  • Useful early game before you can reach Akkala for 5-speed horses
  • Replace them once you find better

Where to Find 5-Speed Horses

Akkala Highlands meadows (Best source):

  1. Fast travel to Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower
  2. Fly north-northeast toward the Akkala meadows
  3. Black horses in this region frequently have 5-speed stats
  4. Tame with Stealth food (Silent Shroom meal) → crouch → approach from behind → mount → soothe

Necluda hills:

  1. East of Kakariko Village, in the open hill areas
  2. Dark-colored horses here also have good stat chances
  3. Check the Dueling Peaks area meadows

Hyrule Ridge:

  1. West of Hyrule Castle, in the open ridge grasslands
  2. Multiple horse herds spawn here consistently

How to Tame High-Speed Horses

Fast horses are skittish. Standard approach without stealth will send them bolting immediately.

Stealth method (recommended):

  1. Eat a Stealth Level 2–3 meal (5x Sneaky River Snail or Silent Princess)
  2. Crouch before entering the horse's detection radius
  3. Walk slowly toward the horse from behind or the side
  4. Press A to mount when close enough
  5. Rapidly press A to soothe as it bucks
  6. If it bucks you off, repeat — the soothe counter carries over between attempts

Bond meter: After catching, a bar shows your bond level. Higher bond = horse responds better. Feed your horse apples at stables or in the field to increase bond. Max bond = the horse stops and waits when you whistle.

Horse Customization (Stables)

At any stable, you can:

  • Change gear: Saddle and bridle (cosmetic + minor bond boost)
  • Rename: Any registered horse can be renamed
  • Board: Store horses you're not actively using

Special gear: After building Tarrey Town, horse armor becomes available from certain vendors. The Royal Bridle and Saddle set (obtained from a specific quest involving the Malanya spring) improves horse stats when equipped.

Malanya — Horse God

Malanya is the Horse God, found at a Great Fairy Fountain specifically for horses:

  • Location: East of Akkala Stable area, near the Akkala Tech Lab region
  • Function: Revives dead horses (horses that died during gameplay)
  • Cost: 1,000 Rupees to revive a horse

Important: If your horse dies, DON'T despair. Visit Malanya before the situation is lost from memory. It's worth the 1,000 Rupees for a max-stat horse.

Horse vs. Other Transport

| Method | Speed | Stamina Cost | Best For | |--------|-------|-------------|----------| | 5-Speed Horse | Fast | None | Hyrule Field, open roads | | Paraglider + Tower | Very Fast | Stamina | Long aerial traversal | | Hoverbike | Fast | Energy Cell | Any terrain | | Running | Slow | Stamina | Short distances |

Horses beat running everywhere on flat ground. Use horses for road travel and paraglider for aerial/cross-country.
