Best Shields Guide — Top Shields Ranked in TotK
Best Shields Guide — Top Shields Ranked
Shields in TotK serve two roles: blocking incoming damage and enabling Perfect Parry (deflecting projectiles and creating Flurry Rush openings). The best shields combine high guard stat, good durability, and useful fuse potential. This guide ranks every top shield type and explains where to find them.
Shield Stats Explained
| Stat | What It Does | |------|-------------| | Guard | How much damage is reduced when blocking | | Durability | How many hits the shield can absorb before breaking | | Fuse bonus | Additional effect from fusing materials to the shield |
Key insight: Guard stat affects both regular blocking AND the effectiveness of parried attacks. Higher guard = more punishment your shield can take before you need to replace it.
Shield Tier List
S-Tier
Hylian Shield — Guard: 90 The best shield in the game. The Hylian Shield has:
- Highest base guard in TotK (90 guard)
- Highest durability of any shield
- Iconic blue/gold design
- Can be fused for additional properties
Where to find it:
- In Hyrule Castle — the castle basement area, in a chest in the underground section
- Specifically: enter from Hyrule Castle's underground lake, navigate to the stockroom area
- Coordinates approximately: 0295, 0716, 0075 (underground passage area)
After breaking: The Hyrule Castle chest respawns after Blood Moon if you broke the original. Alternatively, the chest respawns on save/reload in some cases.
Warning: Hyrule Castle is the most dangerous area in the game. Prepare with strong armor, food, and weapons before attempting to retrieve the Hylian Shield.
A-Tier
Savage Lynel Shield — Guard: 62 Dropped by White-Maned and Silver Lynels:
- High guard (62)
- Excellent durability
- Best non-Hylian shield from regular enemy drops
Where to find: Kill White-Maned Lynels (multiple locations across Hyrule) or Silver Lynels (post-game, harder locations).
Royal Shield — Guard: 55 Found in chests or dropped by Royal Guard enemies in Hyrule Castle:
- Reliable mid-tier shield
- Good durability for its guard level
- Elegant appearance
Where to find:
- Hyrule Castle chests (various rooms)
- Some merchants post-game
- Treasure hunters and Depths chests
B-Tier
Knight's Shield — Guard: 40 Common shield found throughout Hyrule:
- Widely available early game
- Good durability for the guard level
- Consistent go-to before accessing better shields
Where to find: Enemy drops (Knights in Hyrule Castle area), chests throughout Hyrule, Bargainer Statue trades in Depths.
Royal Guard's Shield — Guard: 52 Found in Hyrule Castle as part of the Royal Guard set:
- Higher guard than Knight's Shield
- But lower durability than you'd expect for the guard value
- The Royal Guard set in general has style over substance
C-Tier — Functional Early Game
Soldier's Shield — Guard: 32 Common throughout the game, good starter option.
Wooden Shield — Guard: 2 Basically useless for blocking but allows fire shield fuse (shield can catch fire if you fuse flammable materials — doubles as a torch for caves).
Fusing Shields
Fusing materials to shields changes their properties significantly:
Top Shield Fuses
Bomb Shield (Bomb Flower fused):
- On Perfect Parry: triggers explosion that damages nearby enemies
- Extremely effective for Lynel parry strats — parry the charge, explosion hits Lynel
- The shield breaks the fused bomb on parry, so it's one-use per parry
Elemental Shield Fuses:
- Fuse Ruby to shield → fire shield (melts ice in cold areas, lights torches by pressing ZL)
- Fuse Sapphire → ice shield (freezes nearby water, cold resist when blocking)
- Fuse Topaz → thunder shield (can arc to nearby enemies, minor shock)
Mirror Shield (any reflective material):
- Fuse polished metal or mirror-type material to reflect certain beams
- Some Guardian-type puzzles require reflecting light
Shock Trap Shield:
- Fuse Electric Chuchu Jelly → on hit, electrifies attacker
- Useful against metal-armored enemies
Durability Tips
Extending Shield Life
- Perfect Parry instead of block: Blocking wears shields down; perfect parry (timing your parry right when the attack connects) does not consume durability
- Don't use shields you can't replace against non-critical enemies
- Board enemies: Jumping on Lynel's back and attacking doesn't use your shield at all
When to Sell vs. Keep
- Keep: Hylian Shield (irreplaceable for combat), Savage Lynel Shield (rare drops)
- Use freely: Knight's Shield, Soldier's Shield (widely available)
- Sell: Wooden Shield (5R), any zero-guard decorative shields
Perfect Parry — The Most Important Shield Mechanic
Shields are most valuable for Perfect Parry, not blocking:
- Draw shield (ZL)
- Press A just as an attack is about to connect
- Perfect timing = parry: deflects the attack, stuns some enemies, creates Flurry Rush opening
Parry key uses:
- Lynel sword charges (perfect parry staggers Lynel → mount for free damage)
- Arrow volleys (reflected back at the shooter)
- Gleeok projectiles
- Lizalfos thrown weapons

Shield vs. Dodge (Flurry Rush)
| Approach | Best For | |----------|---------| | Shield + Parry | Lynel fights, Arrow-heavy enemies, Gleeoks | | Dodge + Flurry Rush | Fast enemies, sword fighters, predictable attacks | | Neither (move constantly) | Phase 2 Gleeoks, wide AoE attacks |
For most situations, a combination of parry and dodge is optimal. The Hylian Shield makes blocking a viable third option even for heavy hits.
