Best Meals to Cook — Top Recipes for Every Situation
Cooking transforms raw ingredients into powerful food that heals HP, boosts stats, and grants status effects. Knowing the right meals for each situation is one of the biggest skill multipliers in TotK. This guide covers the best meals for each use case.
How Cooking Works
Basic rules:
- Combine 1-5 ingredients at a cooking pot
- Effect type = the dominant ingredient category
- Effect level = number of effect-type ingredients (more = higher level)
- Duration = potency ingredient quality (monster parts for elixirs; for food, more of the same ingredient increases duration/level)
- 5 ingredients total = longer effect duration
Critical rule: Mixing effect types (e.g., Hearty + Mighty) cancels both effects — you get only HP recovery. Stick to one effect type per meal.
Best Meals by Situation
Max HP Recovery — Hearty Dishes
Recipe: 5x Hearty Durian Effect: Restores all hearts + adds 20 yellow (overheal) hearts Where to get Hearty Durian: Sold at some stores, found in southern Hyrule (Lurelin Village area, Faron region), growing near jungle areas
Why it's the best: 5x Hearty Durian = 20 yellow hearts. Before Lynel fights or boss encounters, eat this for a massive HP buffer.
Alternative: 5x Hearty Radish = 12 yellow hearts (cheaper, more available)
- Hearty Radish locations: Akkala, Lanayru, scattered in fields
Maximum Attack — Mighty Dishes
Recipe: 5x Mighty Banana Effect: Attack Up Level 3, maximum duration Where to get: Faron jungle and south Hyrule forest areas, sometimes sold at stores
Why use it: Attack Up 3 significantly increases damage output — essential for Lynel fights, boss speedkills, and content you're struggling with.
Alternative: 3x Mighty Banana + 2x anything (shorter duration but still Level 3)
- For combat efficiency, stacking with Barbarian Armor = 4+ attack levels total
Maximum Defense — Tough Dishes
Recipe: 5x Ironshroom OR Fortified Pumpkin Effect: Defense Up Level 3, maximum duration Ironshroom locations: Caves throughout Hyrule, especially Akkala and Lanayru caves Fortified Pumpkin locations: Lanayru Hills area, some farms
Why use it: When you're in a hard area and surviving is the priority over DPS.
Maximum Stamina — Enduring Dishes
Recipe: 5x Endura Carrot Effect: Enduring Stamina (yellow ring beyond your cap) — adds ~1 full extra stamina wheel Where to get: Horse stables (sold at some), Satori Mountain area, some Sky Islands
Critical use: Pulling the Master Sword from the Light Dragon. Eat this right before the pull.
Alternative: 3x Endura Carrot + 2x Stamella Shroom = slightly less enduring stamina but uses more common ingredients
Speed — Hasty Dishes
Recipe: 5x Hightail Lizard (cook = Hightail Elixir, not food) Actually: Use Hightail Lizard in ELIXIRS not food.
For Hasty Food: Use Swift Carrot or Swift Violet:
- 5x Swift Carrot = Speed Up Level 2, 8 minutes
- Swift Violet locations: High mountain areas (Hebra, Mount Lanayru), sells at Rito Village
Cold Resistance — Spicy Dishes
Recipe: 5x Spicy Pepper Effect: Heat Level 1 from cold (Cold Resistance Level 1) — 2+ peppers = Level 2 Alternatively: 5x Warm Safflina = Cold Resistance Level 2
Where to get Spicy Pepper: Grows freely near Eldin Canyon base, Akkala, warm areas. One of the most common and renewable cooking ingredients.
Why use it early: Before getting Snowquill Armor, this is your only cold survival option.
Heat Resistance — Chilly Dishes
Recipe: 5x Hydromelon OR 5x Chillshroom Effect: Heat Resistance (for Gerudo Desert daytime) Hydromelon locations: Gerudo Desert vendors, Kara Kara Bazaar, some stores Chillshroom locations: Cold caves, Hebra Mountains
Note: Desert Voe Armor provides permanent heat resist — cook these as backup or early-game solution.
Best Multi-Purpose Meal (Combat)
Recipe: 3x Mighty Banana + 1x Hearty Radish + 1x Stamella Shroom Effect: Attack Up Level 2 + a few yellow hearts + minor stamina Why: This combo gives you both offense and survivability buffer in one meal. Good for standard combat when you don't need maximum of any single stat.
Best Ingredients to Stockpile
| Ingredient | Effect | Source | |------------|--------|--------| | Hearty Durian | Max overheal | Faron jungle, stores | | Mighty Banana | Attack Up 3 | Faron jungle | | Spicy Pepper | Cold Resist | Eldin Canyon base (free, renewable) | | Endura Carrot | Enduring Stamina | Satori Mountain, stables | | Ironshroom | Defense Up | Caves everywhere | | Swift Carrot | Speed Up | Fields, stores | | Sundelion | Gloom Cure | Sky Islands |
Cooking Tips
Tip 1 — 5 of the same ingredient = max effect + max duration for that effect
Tip 2 — Critical cooking (lucky hearts): Sometimes cooking produces bonus yellow hearts randomly. This is uncontrolled but more likely during certain weather or conditions (Blood Moon cooking gives bonus).
Tip 3 — Don't mix effects: Hearty + Mighty = no effect (just basic HP). Always cook single-effect meals.
Tip 4 — Cheap mass cook: 5x Spicy Pepper = cheap Level 2 cold resist meal. Stack 20 meals' worth easily.
Tip 5 — Elixirs for Fireproof: There's no food that grants Fireproof status. Only Fireproof Elixir (Fireproof Lizard + monster part) works for Death Mountain.
