Flamebreaker Armor Guide — Goron City Shop, Flame Guard & Death Mountain
Flamebreaker Armor Guide — Surviving Death Mountain
The Flamebreaker Armor is TotK's fire resistance set — sold at Goron City's Ripped and Shredded shop. Death Mountain's exterior and the Fire Temple require Flame Guard protection. Without it, the volcanic environment sets Link on fire constantly. This guide covers purchase, upgrades, and the Firebreaker set bonus.
Where to Buy Flamebreaker Armor
Shop: Ripped and Shredded — armorer in Goron City Location: Goron City, Eldin region (see Eldin Region Guide for full directions)
| Piece | Cost | |-------|------| | Flamebreaker Helm | 1,400 rupees | | Flamebreaker Armor | 700 rupees | | Flamebreaker Boots | 1,000 rupees | | Full set | 3,100 rupees |
Most expensive armor shop in TotK — 3,100 rupees total. Start farming rupees before you arrive.
Priority buy order:
- Flamebreaker Armor (700r) — cheapest, gives Flame Guard level 1
- Flamebreaker Boots (1,000r) — adds second level
- Flamebreaker Helm (1,400r) — completes the set
Flame Guard Levels — What You Need Where
| Flame Guard Level | What It Covers | |------------------|---------------| | Level 1 (1 piece) | Lower Death Mountain slopes, approaching lava pools | | Level 2 (2 pieces) | Mid-Death Mountain, most surface lava areas | | Level 3 (full set) | Death Mountain Caldera, Fire Temple interior, active lava flows |
Note: Flame Guard only protects from environmental fire hazards (hot floors, lava proximity). It does NOT protect from direct fire attacks from enemies — those still deal damage.
Fireproof Elixir alternative:
- Fireproof Lizard + monster part = Fireproof Elixir
- Gives temporary Flame Guard (level 1)
- Useful for approaching Goron City without Flamebreaker Armor
- Fireproof Lizards found on Death Mountain base slopes
Set Bonus — Fireproof
At ★★ (all 3 pieces upgraded to ★★):
- Fireproof — complete protection from fire damage in hot environments; also prevents catching fire from fire attacks at certain intensities
With the set bonus + full upgrade:
- Stand in lava for extended periods without damage
- Fire Keese, Fire Chuchu, and fire-based environmental attacks don't set Link on fire
- The Fire Temple becomes significantly more manageable
Upgrade Materials
Great Fairy required.
| Level | Materials per piece | |-------|-------------------| | ★ | 3× Bokoblin Fang, 5× Amber | | ★★ | 3× Fireproof Lizard, 3× Lizalfos Horn | | ★★★ | 4× Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horn, 4× Ruby | | ★★★★ | 4× Marbled Gohma Leg, 4× Hinox Horn |
Marbled Gohma Leg (★★★★): Dropped by Marbled Gohma, the Fire Temple boss. You fight it naturally during the Fire Temple questline. You'll have at least 1 leg after the first kill — keep it for the upgrade.
Death Mountain Exploration Without Full Set
If you can't afford all 3 pieces yet:
Approach with partial armor:
- 1 piece + Fireproof Elixir = Flame Guard level 2 (covers most exploration)
- 2 pieces = Flame Guard level 2 (reliable for all except the caldera rim)
- Full set = safe everywhere on Death Mountain
Fireproof Elixir farming:
- Fireproof Lizards live on the rocks above Goron City (north face of Death Mountain)
- They're fast — sneak with Stealth Armor or crouch to approach
- Combine with Bokoblin Horn for a medium-duration elixir
Fire Temple — Armor Requirements
The Fire Temple (inside Death Mountain) requires at minimum Flame Guard level 2:
- Many interior rooms have lava floors or fire hazard tiles
- Boss arena (Marbled Gohma) has active lava geysers
- Flamebreaker set recommended but not strictly mandatory — skilled players can survive with 1 piece + elixirs
Fire Temple entrance: Inside the Death Mountain Caldera — accessible after clearing the crater approach (Flame Guard level 3 needed for the crater itself).
Flamebreaker vs Other Fire Resistance Sources
| Option | Coverage | Duration | Notes | |--------|----------|----------|-------| | 1× Flamebreaker piece | Level 1 | Permanent | Cheap entry point (700r) | | 2× Flamebreaker | Level 2 | Permanent | Good for most Death Mountain | | Full Flamebreaker ★★ | Level 3 + Fireproof | Permanent | Best — recommended for endgame | | Fireproof Elixir | Level 1 | 5-10 min | Accessible early, not sustainable | | Spicy food (wrong type) | 0 fire resistance | — | Spicy food is for COLD, not fire |
Common mistake: Players confuse Spicy food (cold resistance) with fire resistance. They are different. Fire resistance requires Flamebreaker Armor or Fireproof Elixir.
Quick Tips
- 3,100 rupees is steep — farm rupees at Akkala Citadel Lynel or sell gems before heading to Goron City. See Rupees Guide.
- Flamebreaker Armor piece first — the chest piece at 700r is the biggest bang for the first rupee. It alone opens up Death Mountain exploration significantly.
- Fireproof Lizards for the gap — while saving for the full set, Fireproof Elixirs bridge the coverage gap. Farm them on Death Mountain base.
- Don't skip ★★ — the Fireproof set bonus is one of the most powerful in TotK. Getting all 3 pieces to ★★ before entering the Fire Temple makes the dungeon trivially safe.
- Ruby deposits in Eldin — Eldin has some of the best Ruby deposits in the game. Farm Ruby while exploring (sell value 210r each) to offset the 3,100r cost of the full armor set.
