Eldin Region Guide — Death Mountain, Goron City & Fire Temple
Eldin Region Guide — Death Mountain & Fire Temple
Eldin is TotK's volcanic region — Death Mountain dominates the landscape, Goron City sits on its slopes, and the Fire Temple burns deep within. The entire region requires progressive fire resistance, with higher altitudes demanding more protection. This guide covers getting in, surviving, and getting everything Eldin has to offer.
Getting to Eldin
Main approach: North from Hyrule Field → Eldin Canyon. The Eldin Canyon Skyview Tower is at the southern base of the volcano — activate it first to reveal the region map.
Eldin Canyon road: The road from Hyrule Field passes through canyons with moderate heat. No fire damage at this altitude — Spicy food is overcaution here. Standard traversal is fine until the Goron City altitude.
Fast travel: Activate Eldin Canyon Tower + Eldin Mountains Tower. Mountains Tower is at higher altitude and reveals the more dangerous volcanic terrain.
Fire Resistance Tiers in Eldin
| Altitude Zone | Hazard | Resistance Needed | |--------------|--------|------------------| | Eldin Canyon (lower) | Heat — no fire damage | None required | | Goron City (mid) | Ambient fire damage | Tier 1 (Flamebreaker or Chilly food — note: heat ≠ fireproof) | | Death Mountain (upper) | Active fire damage | Tier 2 (Flamebreaker ★★ or Elixir) | | Crater Rim | Severe fire damage | Tier 2 + Fireproof Elixir |
Flamebreaker Armor (from Goron City shop):
- Base Flamebreaker Helm, Chestplate, Boots — each piece provides Tier 1 fire resistance
- Full set at ★★: Fireproof set bonus — prevents catching fire from direct flame attacks (distinct from heat damage resist)
- Without Flamebreaker: fire attacks from enemies and environmental hazards will set Link ablaze
Important distinction:
- Heat Resistance (Chilly food) = prevents ambient volcanic heat damage
- Fireproof (Flamebreaker set bonus / Fireproof Elixir) = prevents Link from catching fire when hit
- You need BOTH for Death Mountain summit and Fire Temple
Goron City
Goron City is the main hub — a carved stone town on Death Mountain's lower slopes.
Services:
- Flamebreaker Armor shop (all 3 pieces)
- Goron hot spring (restore hearts by standing in it)
- Inn (sleep advances time + full heart restore)
- Vendor (arrows, Bomb Flowers, fireproof food)
Main quest start: Talk to any Goron — they'll direct you to Yunobo (Goron hero). The Goron questline tracks Yunobo's odd behavior and ultimately leads to the Fire Temple.
Goron Questline
- Speak with the Goron elder at Goron City
- Learn Yunobo is acting strangely — find him at the abandoned mine to the north
- Snap Yunobo out of the Marbled Rock Roast trance (use water or Recall on the rock)
- Yunobo joins as Sage companion → leads to Fire Temple entrance
Yunobo's ability: After becoming a Sage, Yunobo can be commanded to roll into targets. Press Y → Yunobo charges the direction you aim. Breaks cracked boulders, activates rolling mechanisms, and deals heavy impact damage.
Death Mountain Resources
Death Mountain is TotK's best mining zone for high-tier gems:
Ruby: Most abundant high-value gem in Eldin. Volcanic cave walls are rich with Ruby ore nodes. Diamond: Less common but present at higher altitudes — specifically in the volcanic caves above Goron City. Fireproof Lizard: Exclusively found here. Check rock faces and cave exteriors. Smotherwing Butterfly: Eldin caves — critical for Fireproof Elixirs.
Best mining circuit:
- Start at Goron City
- Enter all caves on the east slope (3–4 cave entrances visible from the road)
- Mine every glowing ore node — Ruby and Flint primarily, occasional Diamond
- Loop around to northwest caves
- Return to Goron City area → reset after Blood Moon
Igneo Pebblit: Small fire-elemental rock creature spawned from Igneo Talus encounters or found at high altitude. Drops Igneo Pebblit Talisman — useful for fire resistance food/elixir.
Akkala Citadel (East Eldin boundary)
The Akkala Citadel sits at the border between Eldin and Akkala. Contains:
- A Blue-Mane Lynel on the upper ramparts — mid-game combat challenge
- Multiple high-tier weapon chests (Royal Claymore, Knight's weapons)
- East Akkala Stable nearby for resupply
The Citadel rewards visiting if you have 2+ stamina wheels and a stocked inventory — the Lynel here drops Lynel Saber Horn.
Fire Temple
Location: Deep inside Death Mountain, accessible after completing the Goron questline with Yunobo.
Requirement: Flamebreaker Armor (full set recommended) + Fireproof Elixirs for deep sections.
Core mechanic: Use Yunobo to smash cracked walls and activate rolling metal gong mechanisms throughout the multi-floor mine interior.
Temple Navigation
The Fire Temple is a vertical mine with 5 floors. Each floor has 1 gong that must be struck to unlock the boss room. The gongs are activated by rolling Yunobo into them (or into a cracked wall that connects to the mechanism).
Key puzzle: Several gong mechanisms require a mine cart track. Use Ultrahand to direct mine carts along the rails — Yunobo can ride in them for precision shots at ceiling gongs.
Shortcuts: Cracked walls are everywhere. Before solving the intended puzzle path, try Bomb Flower arrows on every cracked wall — several open direct routes to gongs that bypass 2–3 room chains.
Boss: Marbled Gohma
Phase 1:
- Gohma hangs on the ceiling covered in Marbled Rock armor
- Aim Yunobo (Y button) at the glowing orange eye in its body — Yunobo's roll cracks the armor plates
- After 3–4 Yunobo hits, armor falls off → Gohma crashes to the floor
- Immediately melee the exposed orange eye for burst damage
Phase 2 (50% HP):
- Gohma retreats to the lava pool briefly, regenerates partial armor, re-emerges
- Same Yunobo cycle: hit the eye with Yunobo → wait for crash → melee burst
Watch for: Stalactite drops from the ceiling (Gohma triggers them periodically). Stalactites create shadow circles on the floor — move out of shadow before impact.
Recommended equipment:
- Mighty Elixir or Mighty food active during the fight
- Strong melee weapon (Lynel weapon or Gibdo Bone Fused sword)
- Fireproof Elixir (active throughout for lava-adjacent areas)
Reward: Yunobo becomes permanent Sage companion + Rock Roast quest completion.
Eldin Sky Islands
The Eldin region has a sky island cluster above Death Mountain visible from the Eldin Mountains Skyview Tower:
- Lower Eldin Sky Islands: Accessible from Eldin Canyon Tower launch + Paraglider
- Upper volcanic sky islands: Require hoverbike or Tulin + extended glide from Mountains Tower
Sky island rewards:
- Zonai Device capsules (multiple dispensers)
- Bomb Flower clusters
- Zonaite ore nodes
- Unique shrine above the volcanic sky cluster
Quick Tips
- Fireproof Elixir priority: Before entering any area above Goron City altitude, have 3+ Fireproof Elixirs. Catching fire mid-climb is lethal.
- Flamebreaker shop timing: Buy the full Flamebreaker set before ascending — it costs ~650 rupees total but the fire resistance is essential. Don't skip it.
- Hot spring recovery: Goron City's hot spring restores hearts for free — use it as your campfire rest area between Death Mountain runs.
- Igneo Talus location: There's a fixed Igneo Talus at the base of Death Mountain's south approach. Farm it for Igneo Stone (50+ attack Fuse material) and Ruby drops.
- Eldin Mountains Tower for sky access: Launch from the mountain tower (not canyon tower) for the most sky island altitude. You'll reach the volcanic sky cluster in 2–3 glide stages.
- Mine ore before Fire Temple: The Death Mountain caves have the best pre-boss resupply of Ruby (sell for rupees if needed) and Fireproof Lizards (for Fireproof Elixirs).
