Koltin Guide — Bubbul Gem Rewards & Bubbulfrog Farming

Koltin is a Korok who believes Bubbulfrogs hold the secret to transformation. He trades unique items — including rare armor pieces — in exchange for Bubbul Gems collected from Bubbulfrogs. This guide covers every Koltin reward, how to find him, and the fastest Bubbulfrog farming routes.

Who Is Koltin

Koltin is a young Korok who has an obsession with Bubbulfrogs — small glowing blue frogs found in caves across Hyrule. He believes that consuming enough Bubbul Gems will transform him into a Satori (a magical creature of light).

His brother Kilton (from BotW) now runs Mon Shop — a monster parts exchange. Koltin operates independently with his own reward list.

Finding Koltin — Locations

Koltin moves around Hyrule and appears at different locations as you progress through his reward chain:

First Meeting — Woodland Stable

Location: Woodland Stable area (north Central Hyrule, near Eldin)

Speak with Koltin at night near the stable. He's outside looking at the sky. He gives you your first trade opportunity and explains the Bubbul Gem system.

Trigger: Speak with Kilton at Tarrey Town or any Monster Shop first — Kilton tells you about his brother. Then look for Koltin at Woodland Stable.

Subsequent Locations

After each trade, Koltin moves to a new location. His next location is hinted at during the trade conversation. Known locations (in rough order of appearance):

  • Woodland Stable (first meeting)
  • Snowfield Stable area (Tabantha Snowfield)
  • East Akkala Stable vicinity
  • Lurelin Village area (Faron)
  • Tarrey Town nearby
  • Gerudo Town outskirts
  • Rito Village adjacent

Tip: After trading, Koltin always hints at his next location. Write it down or remember the region — he's not hard to find once you know what region to check.

What Are Bubbul Gems

Bubbulfrogs are glowing blue frogs that live in caves throughout Hyrule:

  • Each cave has at most 1 Bubbulfrog
  • Defeating a Bubbulfrog drops 1 Bubbul Gem
  • Bubbulfrogs do NOT respawn on Blood Moon — they are one-time per cave
  • Total Bubbulfrogs in TotK: 147

Identifying Bubbulfrogs:

  • Glowing blue color on cave walls/ceilings
  • Emit a distinct frog sound
  • Visible from a distance by their blue luminescence
  • They flee when approached — hit them with an arrow before they escape

Bubbul Gem Farming Routes

Since Bubbulfrogs don't respawn, farming means exploring every cave in a systematic sweep:

High-Density Regions

Akkala: 12-15 Bubbulfrogs in the cave network northeast of Tarrey Town Lanayru: 10+ frogs in the caves along the Zora River and Mount Lanayru approach Depths access caves: Each chasm entrance often has a cave with a Bubbulfrog nearby Necluda: High cave density east of Kakariko — multiple frogs per circuit

Detection Method

Use Sensor+ set to Bubbulfrog (photograph a Bubbulfrog first to add it to Compendium):

  • Sensor+ will ping every Bubbulfrog in detection range
  • Invaluable for cave exploration — ping means a frog is nearby (or inside the cave ahead)

One-Time Nature

Unlike ore deposits or enemies, Bubbulfrogs don't reset. Track which caves you've cleared. The Bubbulfrog Compendium count in your adventure log shows total frogs caught.

All Koltin Rewards — Full List

Koltin trades Bubbul Gems for unique items in order:

| Gems Required (cumulative) | Reward | |---------------------------|--------| | 3 gems | Bokoblin Mask | | 3 gems | Lizalfos Mask | | 4 gems | Moblin Mask | | 4 gems | Horriblin Mask | | 5 gems | Lynel Mask | | 5 gems | Bubbulfrog-patterned armor piece (Mystic Robe) | | 8 gems | Mystic Pants | | 10 gems | Mystic Headpiece | | 15 gems | Bubbul Gem large quantity trade | | 20 gems | Satori item (special) | | 40 gems | Final reward — rare unique item |

Note: The exact order and gem counts vary slightly by route order. The masks come early (3-5 gems each), the Mystic Armor set comes mid-chain (15-20 gems total for full set), and the rarest rewards come at high gem counts.

Monster Masks — Key Utility

How masks work: Equip a monster mask and nearby enemies of that type will NOT attack you. They think you are one of them.

| Mask | Effect | Best Use | |------|--------|----------| | Bokoblin Mask | Bokoblins ignore Link | Walk through camps, steal items | | Lizalfos Mask | Lizalfos ignore Link | Cross wetland camps undetected | | Moblin Mask | Moblins ignore Link | Navigate Moblin fortresses | | Lynel Mask | Lynels don't attack immediately | Get close for shop/observe before combat | | Horriblin Mask | Horriblins ignore Link | Navigate cliff-cave camps |

Lynel Mask note: The Lynel Mask is the most valuable — it delays Lynel aggression, giving you a few extra seconds to assess the situation. It does NOT permanently prevent aggression.

Mystic Armor Set

The Mystic Armor (3 pieces — Robe, Pants, Headpiece) is the Koltin chain's signature reward:

Set effect: Converts Rupees to defense — the more Rupees you carry, the more defense the set provides. Maximum defense at 9,999+ Rupees.

Set bonus: At ★★+ upgrade: Rupee-powered defense scales higher.

Practical use: Mystic Armor is a niche set — it's powerful for players who accumulate large rupee reserves but punishing if you spend rupees frequently. Best for players doing rupee-rich playthroughs who maintain a large balance.

Koltin Quest Completion

Completing the full Koltin chain (trading all required gems and following his location chain to the end) results in:

  • A final cutscene with Koltin
  • His ultimate fate (story resolution)
  • A unique item reward (Satori-related)

Quick Tips

  • Photograph a Bubbulfrog early — adds it to the Compendium, enabling Sensor+ tracking. Essential for efficient cave clearing.
  • Koltin at night — Koltin only appears at his locations at night. If you can't find him, wait until nightfall at the hinted location.
  • Masks first — prioritize the monster masks in the early reward chain. They unlock stealth approaches to enemy camps that save time in exploration.
  • Lynel Mask for Lynel farming — use the Lynel Mask to approach Lynels calmly, mount them immediately (ZL + A when close), and start the fight from a mounted position. Significant advantage.
  • Don't rush Koltin — the Mystic Armor requires patience. Collect gems during normal cave exploration and trade in batches.
