Light Dragon — Zelda's Sacred Dragon

The Light Dragon is the fourth dragon in Tears of the Kingdom — and unlike Farosh, Naydra, and Dinraal, it is not a Spirit Dragon. The Light Dragon IS Princess Zelda. After using a Secret Stone to transform herself into a dragon in order to preserve and recharge the Master Sword across thousands of years, Zelda became the Light Dragon. Understanding this is the emotional core of TotK's story.

The Light Dragon carries the Master Sword embedded in its head, and it holds all 12 Dragon's Tears geoglyphs along its path. It is an endgame objective — but you can encounter it much earlier if you know where to look.

Light Dragon Overview

| Attribute | Value | |-----------|-------| | Element | Sacred / Holy (no elemental damage) | | Flight Path | Circumnavigates ALL of Hyrule at high altitude | | Altitude | Very high — above most Sky Islands, requires full stamina or Tulin's Gust | | Respawn | Does not despawn; permanently present once discovered | | Special | Carries the Master Sword; yields sacred dragon parts |

Finding the Light Dragon

The Light Dragon flies a massive circuit around all of Hyrule at very high altitude — higher than all other dragons. It is visible from the ground as a golden serpent in the sky.

Reliable sighting locations

| Location | Method | |----------|--------| | Observation towers | Climb any tall Sky Tower — the Light Dragon is visible from this height | | High Sky Islands | The dragon passes near Eventide Island, Akkala, Lanayru, and Hebra sky regions | | Necluda Sky | One of the most consistent intercept points — stand on the Necluda Sky Archipelago | | Central Hyrule | Patient observation from Hyrule Castle towers at dawn |

The Light Dragon has the longest circuit path of any dragon — expect a wait of several in-game days if you miss it. Setting up camp near a known intercept point and sleeping through cycles is the most efficient waiting strategy.

Pulling the Master Sword

The Master Sword is embedded in the Light Dragon's head. To pull it free:

Prerequisites

  1. Collect all 12 Dragon's Tears memories — the geoglyphs scattered across Hyrule. After viewing the final memory, a cutscene plays showing the Master Sword's location.
  2. Maximum stamina recommended — Pulling the sword requires maintaining grip on the dragon's head for approximately 10 seconds. A full stamina wheel plus one stamina vessel is the minimum; maximum stamina makes it safe.

Step-by-step

  1. Locate the Light Dragon (see above)
  2. Climb to the dragon's altitude — Use Tulin's Gust ability repeatedly from a high Sky Island to gain extra height, or dive from a Sky Tower and glide into position below the dragon
  3. Land on the dragon's back — Aim for the mid-body section, which is the most stable landing zone
  4. Walk forward to the head — Move carefully along the glowing golden back toward the head. The dragon's spines can serve as handholds
  5. Interact with the Master Sword — A prompt appears when you reach the embedded blade
  6. Hold the interact button for ~10 seconds — Zelda's love for Link powers the pull. Your stamina depletes during this; eat Endura meals beforehand or equip maximum stamina
  7. The Master Sword is yours — Base 30 damage, doubles to 60 against Gloom-corrupted enemies; recharges itself after 10 minutes of use

Tip: Eat two or three Endura Elixirs before attempting the pull. Endura provides bonus stamina above your maximum, giving you a full buffer even if you arrive with depleted stamina.

Light Dragon Parts

Unlike the three Spirit Dragons, the Light Dragon's parts carry sacred energy — they resonate with the Master Sword and holy attacks.

| Part | How to Farm | Primary Uses | |------|-------------|-------------| | Light Dragon Scale | Shoot body scales with an arrow | Shield fusion — adds holy aura, bonus damage to Gloom enemies | | Light Dragon Claw | Shoot the claws at the feet | Weapon fusion — sacred slash, bonus vs Phantom Ganon | | Light Dragon Fang | Shoot teeth in the mouth | Arrow fusion — holy precision shot, extra damage vs undead | | Light Dragon Horn | Shoot the horn at the head | Weapon fusion — highest sacred damage boost of any dragon part |

Farming schedule

The Light Dragon does not despawn between cycles — unlike the Spirit Dragons, it remains in the sky permanently. Each dragon part area (scale, claw, fang, horn) respawns after:

  • One Blood Moon (if triggered), or
  • One in-game day (~24 minutes real time)

You can only collect one part per body zone per cycle. To farm efficiently, target a specific body part per visit and fast travel to a Skyview Tower, climb to altitude, and collect the same part repeatedly across days.

Dragon's Tears Geoglyphs

The 12 Dragon's Tears are massive geoglyphs visible only from high altitude — sacred drawings left across Hyrule recording Zelda's journey backward through time. Each geoglyph contains a Memory Medallion — interact with the puddle of light at the geoglyph to trigger a cutscene.

The memories are viewable in any order, but the 12th memory (the final one) triggers a special cutscene only after all 11 others have been seen.

All 12 Dragon's Tears Locations

| # | Memory Name | Region | Landmark | |---|-------------|--------|----------| | 1 | Tears of the Dragon | Necluda | Kakariko Village geoglyph east of village | | 2 | Where Am I? | Central Hyrule | Northwest Hyrule Field, large circle geoglyph | | 3 | Mineru's Counsel | Eldin | Death Mountain foothills, dragon-shape north of Eldin | | 4 | The Awakening of Mineru | Lanayru | East Lanayru, serpent geoglyph on plateau | | 5 | A Show of Fealty | Akkala | Akkala Highlands, multi-wing geoglyph | | 6 | Sonia Is Killed | Hyrule Field | Central west Hyrule, large circular geoglyph | | 7 | Zelda and Rauru | Tabantha | Tabantha Frontier, dragon-shape geoglyph | | 8 | Birth of the Demon King | Gerudo | Gerudo Highlands, massive geoglyph on plateau | | 9 | The Imprisoning War | Lanayru | East Lanayru Wetlands, serpent geoglyph | | 10 | Zelda's Wish | Hebra | South Hebra Mountains geoglyph | | 11 | The Secret Stone | Faron | South Faron near Lurelin, circular geoglyph | | 12 | Dragon's Tears (Final) | Hyrule Ridge | Northwest Hyrule Ridge — only unlocks after all 11 others |

Navigation tip: The Paraglider + Tulin's Gust + any Skyview Tower gives you the best aerial view. The geoglyphs are 200–500m across — you need to climb high enough to see the full shape before the memory medallion appears.

Light Dragon Parts — Best Uses

| Part | Best Fusion | Why | |------|-------------|-----| | Light Dragon Scale | Shield | Passive holy aura on any shield; reflects Gloom damage back to Phantom Ganon forms | | Light Dragon Fang | Arrow | Holy tracking shot — slight homing on undead targets; excellent for Queen Gibdo and Phantom Ganon archers | | Light Dragon Horn | Sword or Spear | Highest sacred-element damage boost; pairs with Master Sword for stacked anti-Gloom bonus | | Light Dragon Claw | Two-handed weapon | Sacred cleave — bonus damage on AoE swings against Gloom Hands clusters |

Combat Tips Near the Light Dragon

  • The Light Dragon does not attack Link — unlike the Spirit Dragons (Farosh shocks nearby targets), the Light Dragon is completely passive. You can stand on it indefinitely
  • No elemental damage from standing on it — the Light Dragon's golden energy is purely visual on its body. You cannot be hurt by landing or walking on it
  • Other enemies near the dragon — occasionally Aerocudas and Sky Octoroks patrol near the Light Dragon's altitude. Clear them before attempting the Master Sword pull to avoid interruption
  • The dragon glows brighter near Dawn — easier to track visually in early morning in-game time

Story Context (Spoilers)

After Zelda obtained Rauru's Secret Stone during her time in ancient Hyrule, she swallowed it and used the Draconification ability to transform herself into a dragon — sacrificing her humanity to preserve the Master Sword within her body across thousands of years until Link could retrieve it in the present. This is why the Light Dragon looks like Zelda's design motifs (white and gold coloring, her hair as the dragon's mane) and why pulling the Master Sword causes Zelda to return to her human form.

The Dragon's Tears memories record this sacrifice in reverse — you're watching Zelda's plan unfold from its end point back toward its beginning.
