Royal Guard Armor Guide — How to Get It & Hyrule Castle Locations
Royal Guard Armor Guide — The Elite Blue-and-Gold of the Old Kingdom
The Royal Guard Armor is the prestige combat set of the old Hyrulean Kingdom — worn exclusively by the castle's elite guard unit before the Calamity destroyed them. Mechanically it shares its set bonus (Charge Atk. Stamina Up) with the Fierce Deity and Barbarian sets, making it the third strong option for charged-attack combat builds. All three pieces are found inside Hyrule Castle, making this a mid-to-late game set obtained during the Hyrule Castle exploration or on a dedicated chest-hunting run.
Quick Stats
| Stat | Value | |------|-------| | Set Bonus | Charge Atk. Stamina Up | | Per-Piece Bonus | Attack Up | | Upgradeable | Yes (Great Fairy Fountains) | | Fairy Level for Bonus | Level 2 (2-star) | | Category | Combat | | How to Obtain | Treasure chests inside Hyrule Castle |
How to Get the Royal Guard Armor — Hyrule Castle Locations
All three pieces are treasure chests inside Hyrule Castle. The castle is accessible at any point in the game — you do not need to complete any temples first. However, it's filled with Gloom (deal damage that reduces max temporary hearts), strong Bokoblin and Moblin variants, and Guardian Scouts.
Preparation before entering:
- Bring Sundelion-based meals (Sunny Fried Wild Greens, Sunny Veggie Rice Balls) to restore Gloom-afflicted hearts
- 8+ hearts recommended for safe traversal
- Flamebreaker Armor useful for the lower Sanctum lava areas
- Fire and Ice Arrows for elemental enemies scattered throughout
1. Royal Guard Cap
Location: Hyrule Castle — Second Floor, Guard Room corridor
The Royal Guard Cap is in a treasure chest in the Guard Room area on the second floor of the castle's main structure.
How to reach it:
- Enter Hyrule Castle from the main gate or via Ascend through the rock above the moat
- Navigate to the second floor via the main staircase in the entry hall
- The Guard Room corridor is northeast of the throne room — look for the long hallway with multiple armor display alcoves
- The chest is at the end of the corridor, past the Guardian Scout patrol
2. Royal Guard Uniform
Location: Hyrule Castle — Dining Hall, upper balcony
The Royal Guard Uniform chest is on the upper balcony overlooking the Dining Hall in the castle's east wing.
How to reach it:
- From the main hall, head to the castle's east wing and locate the Dining Hall (large room with a long central table)
- Use Ascend through the Dining Hall ceiling or find the staircase on the hall's north wall to reach the upper level
- The chest is on the balcony above the east side of the hall
3. Royal Guard Boots
Location: Hyrule Castle — Armory, underground level
The Royal Guard Boots are in the Armory, one level below the castle's main floor.
How to reach it:
- Find the downward staircase in the castle's west wing — the Armory is the large weapon storage room
- The Armory contains Gloom-corrupted Guardian Scouts; clear or dodge them
- The chest is against the back wall of the Armory behind weapon racks
Alternative: Use Ascend from the underground moat level to bypass the staircase approach entirely — the Armory floor is reachable from directly below.
Set Bonus — Charge Atk. Stamina Up
Identical to the Fierce Deity and Barbarian set bonuses. At 2-star upgrade, the full three-piece set reduces stamina consumed by charge attacks.
The practical benefit: charge attacks with two-handed weapons (Royal Claymore, Great Sword variants) drain less stamina per swing, allowing longer aggressive sequences before needing to disengage.
Per-piece Attack Up: Each individual piece also provides Attack Up (same as Fierce Deity and Barbarian per-piece bonuses). This stacks to a significant damage increase even before the set bonus activates.
Upgrade Costs
1-Star (⭐)
- Per piece: 3x Bokoblin Horn, 3x Bokoblin Fang
2-Star (⭐⭐) — Set Bonus Unlocked
- Per piece: 5x Moblin Horn, 5x Moblin Fang
3-Star (⭐⭐⭐)
- Per piece: 5x Lizalfos Horn, 5x Lizalfos Tail, 5x Blue Bokoblin Horn
4-Star (⭐⭐⭐⭐) — Max Defense
- Per piece: 5x Blue Moblin Horn, 5x Blue Lizalfos Horn, 1x Star Fragment
Total for full set 4-star: Significant horn/fang material investment across Bokoblin, Moblin, and Lizalfos variants. Plan to farm several Blood Moon cycles to complete all three pieces.
Royal Guard vs. Fierce Deity vs. Barbarian
All three sets share the same bonus. The differences are cosmetic and availability:
| | Royal Guard | Fierce Deity | Barbarian | |--|--|--|--| | Per-piece bonus | Attack Up | Attack Up | Attack Up | | Set bonus | Charge Atk. Stamina Up | Charge Atk. Stamina Up | Charge Atk. Stamina Up | | How to get | Hyrule Castle chests | amiibo / Akkala Depths | Lanaryu / Faron Depths | | Accessibility | Mid-to-late game | Early-mid (Depths run) | Mid-game (Depths) | | Appearance | Blue + gold regalia | White divine warrior | Skull + bone primal |
Recommendation: Functionally identical. Pick based on your preferred aesthetic or whichever you find first. The Royal Guard set has the strongest lore connection to the Calamity era, making it a fan favorite for thematic playthroughs.
Hyrule Castle as a Farming Run
Beyond the Royal Guard Armor, Hyrule Castle contains some of the game's highest-value loot:
- Royal Weapons scattered throughout (high base attack, found in chests and dropped by enemies)
- Ancient Blades in specific armory chests — instant-kill fusion components
- Large Zonaite deposits in certain chambers
- Gloom-resistant food pickups throughout (Sundelions, Sunshrooms)
If you're going in for the Royal Guard set, do a full castle clear simultaneously for maximum resource efficiency. The castle resets on Blood Moons, so chest items do NOT respawn — but enemy drops do.
Royal Guard Armor Lore
The Royal Guard of Hyrule Castle was the kingdom's elite defensive force, personally sworn to protect King Rhoam and Princess Zelda. Their distinctive blue-and-gold armor was commissioned from the finest Hyrulean smiths, using materials imported from across the kingdom's territories. The Guard uniform signified the highest honor available to a Hyrulean soldier — only the most skilled warriors were accepted into the corps. When Calamity Ganon awakened and the Guardian network was corrupted, the Royal Guard was the last line of defense. None survived. The armor pieces remaining in the castle were left behind when the Guard fell, preserved in their storage rooms by the same Gloom energy that corrupted everything else — suspended in place, untouched for the 100+ years that followed. Finding them is both a reward and a memorial to the soldiers who wore them.
