Tulin Guide — Sage of Wind Abilities, Uses & Tips in TotK
Tulin Guide — Sage of Wind
Tulin is the young Rito warrior who becomes the Sage of Wind after completing the Wind Temple. His ability — Gust — sends a directional burst of wind that propels Link forward while gliding, extending paraglider range dramatically. He's arguably the most universally useful of the four main sages.
Tulin's Ability — Gust
How it works: When near Tulin, press A while paragliding to trigger Gust. He fires a concentrated burst of wind in the direction you're facing, launching Link forward and upward (slightly).
Cooldown: Short — roughly 2-3 seconds between uses.
What Gust does:
- Extends glide range significantly (nearly doubles horizontal distance)
- Provides brief altitude gain (not a major lift, but prevents stalling)
- Can be used repeatedly — chain multiple Gusts for very long glide chains
- Works in any direction you're facing
How to Get Tulin
Prerequisite: Complete the Wind Temple main quest.
Quest chain:
- Reach Rito Village (northwest Hyrule, accessed via Hyrule Ridge → Tabantha Bridge)
- Speak with Teba and follow the main quest thread
- Investigate the blizzard affecting Rito Village
- Ascend to Hebra Peak and reach the Wind Temple (floating island)
- Complete the Wind Temple and defeat the boss Colgera
- Tulin joins as a sage companion
After the Wind Temple, Tulin automatically follows Link everywhere. His icon appears near Link on-screen.
Sage Summoning — How Companions Work
All sages follow Link automatically, but you need to summon their physical presence to use abilities:
- Look at Tulin's icon → the sage spirit appears nearby
- To use Gust, Tulin must be physically manifested near you
- If you summoned a different sage, re-summon Tulin for Gust access
- Only one sage can be "active" (physically present) at a time
Quick swap: Tap the sage icon on the HUD to cycle through sages.
Best Uses for Tulin's Gust
1. Extended Gliding (Primary Use)
Tulin's main value is massively extending paraglider range:
- From Skyview Towers: launch → glide → Gust repeatedly → reach destinations previously too far
- Cross large water bodies (Lake Hylia, Lanayru Sea) without swimming
- Reach Sky Islands that would otherwise require climbing tall structures
Technique: Time each Gust just as your glide starts to lose altitude. This chains altitude maintenance for extremely long glides.
2. Combat — Enemy Knockback
Gust in combat knocks back unshielded enemies:
- Blow Bokoblins, Lizalfos, and lighter enemies off cliffs or ledges
- Interrupt enemy attacks (timing-dependent)
- Combine with Bomb Arrows: Gust to create distance, Bomb Arrow to finish
Best use case: Enemies near ledges or water — Gust them off for instant kill / distance from danger.
3. Enemy Aerial Approach
Some enemies are on elevated positions or aerial platforms:
- Gust while gliding toward Sky Islands with enemies on them
- Approach Guardian Scouts on elevated terrain without losing altitude
- Reach Gleeok Phase 2 positions faster (glide to airborne Gleeok height with Gust assist)
4. Stamina Conservation
Normally, reaching high areas requires either climbing (stamina-heavy) or using Skyview Towers. With Tulin:
- Gust extends glide range → less climbing needed overall
- Maintain altitude longer → arrive at destinations with more stamina
- This makes the early/mid game much more accessible before getting stamina upgrades
5. Sailing Pads and Updrafts
Gust complements environmental wind mechanics:
- Add Gust to updraft riding for extra distance
- Chain Gust between multiple updrafts for cross-map glides
- Use Gust near Zonai fans to extend their wind assistance
Tulin vs. Other Sages for Exploration
| Sage | Ability | Best For | |------|---------|----------| | Tulin | Gust — extend glide | Exploration, traversal, everything | | Sidon | Water Barrier — absorb damage | Combat survivability | | Yunobo | Rock Roll — break ore/walls | Mining, specific puzzles | | Riju | Lightning Strike — electric AoE | Combat, Thunder Gleeok prep | | Mineru | Construct control | Depths combat, heavy lifting |
Verdict: Tulin is the default exploration sage. Keep him active unless you specifically need another sage's combat ability. His Gust affects every aspect of exploration and is useful in every region of the game.
Tulin Tips
Tip 1 — Great Sky Island early: Even before the Wind Temple, you can access Tulin's ability via a different mechanic. The Wind Temple itself is the path to his full sage power.
Tip 2 — Gleeok Phase 2: When Ice, Fire, or Thunder Gleeoks fly into Phase 2, use Gust to rapidly ascend to their height during glide. Cuts Phase 2 aerial approach time significantly.
Tip 3 — Korok Seed puzzles: Some Korok puzzles are in hard-to-reach locations (small sky platforms, cliff edges). Gust + precise paraglider control makes these easily accessible.
Tip 4 — Layered Gust chains: From maximum height (Skyview Tower peak), you can use 8-10 Gusts in a single long glide, covering enormous map distances. Great for reaching distant quest objectives without shrine fast travel.
Tip 5 — Keep Tulin active by default: Of all sages, Tulin's passive presence (even when his ability isn't triggered) provides the most quality-of-life benefit. He's the only sage whose ability assists purely non-combat activities consistently.
