Ultrahand Guide — Mastering TotK's Core Ability

Ultrahand is TotK's central building mechanic — it lets Link grab, move, rotate, combine, and position objects. It's the foundation of Zonai builds, most shrine puzzles, and many combat strategies. This guide covers everything beyond the basics.

How Ultrahand Works

Activation: Hold the Ultrahand button (default: L) → cursor appears → aim at an object → A to grab.

Controls while holding:

  • Stick: Move the object in 3D space (relative to Link's position)
  • ZL/ZR: Tilt the object along one axis
  • L/R: Rotate the object along another axis
  • A: Attach to another object (if in contact)
  • B: Cancel / drop the object
  • Y: Detach a previously attached object (separate app mode)

Reach limit: Ultrahand has a maximum range — approximately 8-10 meters. Beyond this, objects can't be grabbed.

Precision Placement

The biggest skill gap in Ultrahand is precision — aligning objects exactly where you need them.

Grid Snapping

TotK uses a loose grid snap when objects are near each other. When one surface is close to another → objects snap together in the nearest valid orientation. Use this for:

  • Aligning planks end-to-end (bridge building)
  • Stacking objects (base → wall)
  • Attaching Zonai devices to flat surfaces

Tip: Approach the attachment surface slowly. Let the snap trigger automatically rather than forcing alignment manually.

Rotation Precision

Free rotation is difficult — small inputs cause large rotations. For precise angles:

  1. Grab object → lift it clear of other objects
  2. Use very small stick inputs for fine rotation
  3. Return to the attachment point with the correct orientation

Vertical Stacking

For building height (stacking blocks or Zonai devices vertically):

  1. Place the base object
  2. Grab the second object
  3. Approach from above and lower it directly down onto the base → snap alignment

Shrine Puzzle Patterns

Ball in Gap Pattern

The most common Ultrahand shrine puzzle:

  • A ball must be moved through a gap or into a hole
  • Grab the ball → maneuver slowly through the gap
  • Rotate if the ball needs a specific orientation (some balls are non-spherical)

Bridge Building

  • Multiple planks must be connected into a bridge
  • Grab first plank → attach to a fixed anchor point
  • Grab second plank → attach end-to-end with first
  • Repeat until bridge spans the gap

Key: Snap-to-grid handles most alignment automatically. Don't overthink manual positioning.

Moving Platform Timing

Some shrines have Ultrahand-interactive moving platforms:

  • Grab the platform while it's at the correct position
  • Hold it in place → cross
  • Release when you're safely on the other side

Lever and Fulcrum

Some shrines use:

  • A long bar balanced on a fulcrum (lever)
  • Place weight on one side → other side rises
  • Use Ultrahand to place heavy objects precisely

Vehicle Building Techniques

Hoverbike Construction

The most important Ultrahand build in the game:

  1. Place 2 Zonai Fans flat (blades facing down)
  2. Position them at 45-degree angles, angled away from each other
  3. Place a Steering Stick in the center-top of the two fans
  4. Stand on the Steering Stick → activate

Ultrahand precision for hoverbike:

  • The fans must be oriented correctly or the bike tilts
  • Use the rotation controls to angle them evenly
  • Test fly over flat ground before attempting the final angle

Tank Construction

  1. Place a flat platform (base)
  2. Attach 4 wheels (2 on each side, front and back)
  3. Attach a Steering Stick on top
  4. Attach a Zonai Cannon or Beam Emitter at the front (optional — for combat)

Wheel alignment: Wheels must be perpendicular to the direction of travel. Rotate each wheel precisely before attaching.

Bridge Vehicles

For crossing chasms:

  1. Long flat platform (multiple plank pieces)
  2. Attach fans underneath (pointing down) for lift
  3. Steering Stick on top

Combat Uses

Environmental Weapon

Grab any heavy object (rock, stone pillar, crate) → throw at enemy clusters:

  • Rock throw: Deals 20-40 impact damage on hit, stagger
  • Metal spike throw: Higher damage, knockback
  • Large boulder: Area impact, staggers multiple enemies

Against Bokoblins: A thrown boulder can one-shot standard Bokoblins or stagger Blue/Black variants.

Platform Shield

Grab a large flat object → hold it between Link and enemies → it absorbs incoming arrows or rocks.

Trap Setting

Place a heavy object above a patrol path:

  1. Lift heavy rock with Ultrahand
  2. Hold it above the enemy patrol route
  3. Wait for enemy to walk under → drop it

Works well on oblivious patrolling Bokoblins.

Catapult Design

For ranged area damage:

  1. Build a simple lever (plank on fulcrum)
  2. Place heavy object on one end (Ultrahand)
  3. Jump on the other end OR use Zonai Spring to activate
  4. The heavy object launches forward → impacts enemy area

Advanced Tips

Detach and Reattach

The Ultrahand Detach mode (separate from the grab mode) lets you:

  • Separate attached objects without destroying them
  • Modify a build mid-use (swap components)
  • Remove a damaged component and add a fresh one

Shortcut: Hold the Ultrahand modifier and aim at an attached component → Detach option appears.

Combining with Recall

Ultrahand + Recall = powerful puzzle solver:

  1. Throw an object with Ultrahand
  2. If you threw it to the wrong location → Recall it back
  3. Try again from a better angle

This eliminates the frustration of mis-throwing in puzzle contexts.

Position Memory

Ultrahand objects don't reset unless you leave the area for a long distance or fast travel. Builds placed in the world persist:

  • Leave a hoverbike at a location → return later → it's still there
  • Placed bridges stay until the area unloads

Practical use: Build a bridge or platform at a useful location → complete other tasks in the area → return to use it.

Quick Tips

  • Snap, don't fight — TotK's Ultrahand snap-to-grid is your friend. For vehicle building, bring components close to each other and let the snap align them. Fighting manual rotation is slower and less accurate.
  • Ultrahand range awareness — objects beyond 8-10 meters can't be grabbed. Position yourself close to objects before attempting Ultrahand. If the cursor doesn't highlight, move closer.
  • Rock throwing is underused — every rock in Hyrule is a free bomb with Ultrahand. Clearing Bokoblin camps with thrown rocks preserves weapon durability for tougher encounters.
  • Recall the failed throw — if you Ultrahand-threw an object to the wrong spot, Recall it immediately (within 8 seconds) rather than manually relocating it.
  • Test vehicles over flat ground — always test a new Zonai vehicle on flat terrain before using it in a complex situation. Misaligned components reveal themselves quickly on flat ground before they cause a crash mid-flight.
