Perched atop the frigid peak of Mount Lanayru — one of the tallest mountains in Hyrule at 539 meters — this tower demands serious cold preparation and ample stamina to reach. The journey is entirely the challenge: multiple switchback sections, sheer ice faces that require consecutive climbing stamina, and level 2 cold damage throughout the upper half of the ascent. Map region unlocked: Eastern Lanayru including Lanayru Bay, the eastern sea coastline, and all coastal Sky Island chains visible to the east. Once you reach the summit platform, activation is immediate — the view is among the most expansive in the game. From here: Lanayru Bay and the eastern ocean stretch to the east; Zora's Domain glitters to the northwest; the Akkala Highlands mark the horizon to the far northeast; and on clear days the distant shape of Eldin's volcanic smoke is visible to the northwest. Naydra (the ice dragon) emerges from the mountain chasm near the base at dawn (05:00 in-game) and ascends past the tower elevation during its morning circuit — making this tower both an exploration fast-travel point and the premier Naydra farming intercept location in the game. Sapphires and Diamonds are embedded in the rock faces near the summit at 400–539 meters altitude. A secret hot spring on the north face restores cold resistance and heals all hearts.
Activation Puzzle Walkthrough
The Obstacle
The tower itself has no terminal puzzle — the challenge is entirely environmental. The tower is located at extreme high altitude (539 meters) near the summit of Mount Lanayru, a level 2 cold zone throughout the upper half of the ascent. The path requires ascending steep, icy switchback trails and sheer ice cliff faces with significant stamina expenditure. Without adequate cold protection, Link takes continuous freezing damage in the upper 200 meters. Without adequate stamina, the cliff faces above 400 meters altitude are unclimbable without stops.
The Solution
Equip the full Snowquill Armor set (all three pieces from Rito Village armor shop) for guaranteed level 2 cold resistance — the upper mountain is unforgiving without it. Alternative: cook Spicy Pepper + Spicy Pepper + Raw Meat for a 12:30-duration cold-resist meal, or Spicy Pepper + Raw Meat + Goat Butter for a standard cold-resist meal (5+ minutes). Navigate the ascent from the south side via the stone path that branches off the Lanayru Wetlands road — this southern approach has the most gradual elevation gain with the fewest sheer cliff segments. Bring at minimum three stamina-recovery meals (Endura Carrots cooked together, Staminoka Bass, or any endura-stamina recipe) for the final steep scramble above 450 meters. The terminal activates immediately on interaction once you reach the summit platform — no additional puzzle. Map region unlocked: Eastern Lanayru coast, the Necluda Sea eastern arc, and all coastal Sky Island chains.
Tips
Full Snowquill Armor set (all three pieces from Rito Village shop) is strongly recommended — the upper half of Mount Lanayru is a level 2 cold zone where single-piece cold protection is inadequate.
Cook multiple Spicy Pepper + Spicy Pepper + Raw Meat meals for maximum 12:30 cold-resist duration as backup — have at least two cooked before beginning the ascent.
Approach from the south side via the stone path branching from the Zora's Domain road — follow the carved stone markers that indicate the ancient mountain trail. This southern approach is the most gradual.
Bring three or more stamina-recovery meals (Endura Carrot, Staminoka Bass, or Energizing Honey equivalents) for the steep upper scramble above 400 meters — the cliff faces here have nearly vertical sections.
Naydra (ice dragon) emerges from the mountain base chasm at dawn (05:00 in-game). Camp on the summit platform overnight and wait for a guaranteed Naydra intercept at the tower launch altitude.
Sapphire and Diamond ore nodes glitter in the rock faces between 400 and 539 meters altitude — scan cliff surfaces during the ascent for blue and white glinting nodes worth mining.
A hidden hot spring on the north face of Mount Lanayru (look for steam rising from a rocky basin below the cliff) provides free cold-resistance restoration and full heart healing without using food.
After launching from the tower, glide east to discover coastal shrines along the Necluda Sea and identify Sky Island chains above the eastern ocean.
