Mija
Location
Located near Snowfield Stable in the frigid Tabantha Tundra region, far northwest of Hyrule. Mija's fountain is nestled in the snowy landscape near the stable at surface coordinates approximately (-3138, 2553). Cold resistance is required to survive the area -- equip Snowquill Armor or cook cold-resistant meals before visiting. The fountain itself is partially frozen over during Link's arrival, which underscores the severity of the cold in this region. Her flower bud is dusted with snow and surrounded by frost-covered ferns. The isolation of this location -- far from any major settlement -- makes Mija the most remote and challenging Great Fairy to reach, but the reward (tier 3 unlock) is proportional to the effort.
Unlock Quest: Serenade to Mija
Mija requires the Stable Trotters to perform a serenade at her frozen fountain. The challenge here is transporting a musician through the harsh snowfield terrain, where cold, ice, and deeply uneven ground make vehicle construction more demanding than the earlier quests. The musician at Snowfield Stable is a violinist who keeps his instrument packed away in a padded case -- he refuses to walk through the snowfield on foot. The vehicle you build must handle ice patches that send wheeled platforms skidding, and frozen slopes that tilt an unstable craft off course. This is widely considered the hardest of the four transport challenges.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough
1
Travel to Snowfield Stable in the Tabantha Tundra region. Equip cold-resistant gear -- at minimum two pieces of Snowquill Armor or a Level 2 cold-resistance cooked meal -- before heading out.
2
Speak with the Stable Trotters violinist at or near the stable. He explains the route to Mija's fountain and warns about the ice patches and wolf packs in the area.
3
Build a vehicle capable of traversing snowy terrain. Sleds with fans work significantly better than wheels on ice and compacted snow -- flat boards glide smoothly where rubber wheels spin out. Attach two rear fans for propulsion and a steering stick for directional control. Horizontal stabilizers on the sides prevent the sled from rolling on icy slopes.
4
Load the violinist onto your sled. He will sit near the center -- keep the weight balanced to prevent the front from lifting under fan thrust.
5
Transport the violinist through the snowfield to Mija's fountain. Watch for ice patches that make steering sluggish, and frozen slopes on the eastern approach that require extra fan power. Clear any wandering wolves before starting the drive to avoid combat interruptions.
6
Once the violinist reaches the fountain, the serenade will begin and Mija will awaken from her frost-covered flower bud in a shower of purple crystalline light.
Armor Upgrade Costs — All 4 Tiers
First Upgrade
10 Rupees
The entry-level armor enhancement that increases defense by one star. Requires common materials and just 10 rupees. Given Mija's cold-region location, she is particularly relevant for upgrading the Snowquill Armor set (purchased in Rito Village) and the Frostbite Shirt armor sold in the Tabantha area. Even tier 1 upgrades on cold-resistance armor improve survivability in the high Hebra peaks where enemies hit harder and cold damage stacks. If you are unlocking Mija as your first or second fairy, batch-upgrade all your cold and ice-damage armor at once.
Example Materials Required
| Material | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Lizalfos Horn | x3 |
| Ice Fruit | x3 |
| Chillfin Trout | x3 |
| Cane Sugar | x3 |
| Bokoblin Horn | x3 |
Second Upgrade
50 Rupees
The second-tier enhancement doubling the first-upgrade defense bonus. Requires uncommon enemy drops and costs 50 rupees. Requires two Great Fairies awakened. Mija is often the third fairy players unlock, meaning tier 2 is already accessible when they reach her -- allowing immediate tier 2 upgrades on cold-region armor sets. The Snowquill set at tier 2 provides full cold resistance (eliminating the need for cold-resist meals in most Tundra areas), which is a major quality-of-life upgrade for extended Tabantha Tundra and Hebra exploration.
Example Materials Required
| Material | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Blue Lizalfos Horn | x5 |
| Ice-Breath Lizalfos Tail | x3 |
| Winterwing Butterfly | x5 |
| Electric Keese Wing | x3 |
| Blue Bokoblin Horn | x3 |
Third Upgrade
200 Rupees
The third-tier enhancement providing substantial defense against elite enemies. Requires rare drops from Hinox, Lynel, and boss-tier monsters, plus 200 rupees. Requires three Great Fairies awakened. Unlocking Mija as the third fairy grants tier 3 access across all three currently unlocked fountains simultaneously -- a significant milestone. Players tackling the Spirit Temple, Hyrule Castle, or Silver enemy hunts in the Depths should prioritize getting their primary armor to tier 3 at this point. Mija's tier 3 unlock is often the catalyst for a major armor upgrade session before the endgame.
Example Materials Required
| Material | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Black Lizalfos Horn | x5 |
| Frost Gleeok Horn | x2 |
| Frox Fang | x2 |
| Black Bokoblin Horn | x3 |
| Lynel Guts | x1 |
Fourth Upgrade (Max)
500 Rupees
The maximum armor enhancement. Requires all four Great Fairies awakened and the rarest materials in the game, plus 500 rupees per upgrade. Mija as the fourth and final fairy unlocked triggers tier 4 availability across all fountains -- the most impactful single unlock in the game for armor progression. Farosh's Horns and Scales (used in Snowquill tier 4 and various other sets) are efficiently farmed by intercepting Farosh's daily sky patrol route near Lake Hylia or Floria River. Batch your Dragon part farming before the final tier 4 upgrade session to minimize travel time.
Example Materials Required
| Material | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Silver Lynel Mace Horn | x2 |
| Star Fragment | x2 |
| Shard of Farosh's Horn | x1 |
| Silver Lynel Horn | x1 |
| Dragon Fang | x1 |
Tips for Mija
1
Cold resistance is mandatory. Equip at least two pieces of Snowquill Armor or cook Spicy Pepper + Meat meals for Level 2 cold resistance before entering the Tabantha Tundra. Level 1 resistance is not enough for the deeper tundra near Mija's fountain.
2
Sleds work far better than wheeled vehicles on ice and snow. Use a flat rectangular board as your base with two fans mounted at the rear. The smooth underside glides over ice patches that would send wheeled vehicles spinning sideways.
3
Mija is often the third fairy players unlock due to the remote, harsh location. Plan your route from Rito Village or Tabantha Bridge Stable -- both offer supply restocking before the northern trek.
4
The snowfield has Ice-Breath Lizalfos, wolves, and occasional Blue Hinox. Clear the patrol path before starting the musician transport to avoid combat while operating your sled vehicle.
5
After unlocking three Great Fairies, Tier 3 upgrades become available across all unlocked fountains -- a massive defense boost requiring mini-boss materials like Hinox Guts and Lynel Hooves. Stock up before visiting Mija if possible.
6
Stock up on Zonai devices from the nearby Zonai dispensers in the Hebra region before building your transport sled. Fans and steering sticks are the essential components -- bring extras in case the build needs adjusting.
7
Lore note: Mija is described in ancient Rito oral tradition as the 'Frost Fairy' who blessed the first Rito singers with the ability to hit crystalline high notes. She is said to weep tears of ice when deeply moved by music, which is why her fountain freezes over during her long dormant periods.
8
If the snowfield approach is too difficult, reach Mija from the sky -- paraglide from a Hebra Sky Island to land near Snowfield Stable, bypassing the ground traverse entirely.
