Cotera

Location

Located on a hill above Kakariko Village in the Necluda region at surface coordinates approximately (1848, -977). Cotera's fountain sits at the top of a wooded hillside path, past the Goddess Statue and up the trail behind the village. Kakariko Village is a safe, central location with shops, side quests, inn services, and story connections -- making Cotera the most accessible Great Fairy for players who prioritize story progression. The path to her fountain winds through dense forest behind the village, and the bud itself rests in a natural stone hollow filled with warm golden light. Players who completed Breath of the Wild will recognize this location instantly -- Cotera has tended this hillside for generations.

Unlock Quest: Serenade to Cotera

Cotera requires the Stable Trotters to serenade her fountain above Kakariko Village. The transport challenge here involves navigating steep hillside terrain around the village and getting a musician -- a flutist who carries a large frame harp -- up the winding path to the fountain above. The harp is too bulky to carry up the trail by hand, requiring a vehicle. The hill path has multiple tight switchback corners and a steep final approach section where standard wheeled vehicles tend to flip. This is considered a moderate-difficulty transport challenge -- easier than Mija's snowfield but harder than Kaysa's flat meadow.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

1

Travel to Kakariko Village in the Necluda region, southeast of Lookout Landing. The village is accessible via the road from Dueling Peaks Stable or by descending from the plateau above.

2

Speak with the Stable Trotters harpist in or near Kakariko Village -- she is usually near the village entrance, looking worriedly at the steep path above. She explains the harp is too heavy and the path too steep to manage on foot.

3

Build a vehicle capable of climbing the hill path behind Kakariko Village. Fans provide forward thrust, and a flat low-profile platform keeps the musician and harp stable on inclines. Avoid tall builds that tip backward on steep sections.

4

Consider using fans angled slightly downward for better traction on the slope, or attach a rocket booster for the steepest segment near the top. A steering stick is essential for navigating the switchback corners.

5

Drive or carry the musician up the winding hillside path past the Goddess Statue to Cotera's fountain at the top of the hill. The path curves twice -- take each turn slowly to avoid sliding off the edge.

6

Once the musician arrives at the fountain, the serenade will be performed and Cotera will emerge from her golden flower bud to the sound of harp music echoing down to the village below.

Armor Upgrade Costs — All 4 Tiers

Tier 1

First Upgrade

10 Rupees

The entry-level armor enhancement increasing defense by one star. Requires common materials and 10 rupees. Cotera's proximity to Kakariko Village makes her ideal for early-game players purchasing the Stealth Armor from the village shop. The Stealth Armor at tier 1 provides a meaningful improvement to sneak attack bonuses for the Yiga Clan hideout, nearby Hinox encounters, and Lynel approaches. If Cotera is your first Great Fairy unlock, prioritize whichever armor set you are actively wearing -- even one tier on your default starting armor is a visible improvement against early Necluda enemies.

Example Materials Required

Tier 2

Second Upgrade

50 Rupees

The second-tier enhancement doubling the first-upgrade defense bonus. Requires uncommon enemy drops and costs 50 rupees. Requires two Great Fairies awakened. Cotera is ideally positioned for upgrading the Stealth Armor to tier 2 -- where it reaches full night-speed bonus activation -- right after completing the Kakariko Village story quests. The Stealth set at tier 2 provides a full stealth movement bonus that activates regardless of time of day, making it the best exploration armor set until the Depths areas. The Sheikah-themed Rubber Armor (lightning resistance) also upgrades well at Cotera given the nearby Faloraa thunder plains.

Example Materials Required

MaterialQuantity
Fire Keese Wingx5
Hinox Toenailx3
Mighty Thistlex5
Electric Keese Wingx3
Swift Violetx3
Tier 3

Third Upgrade

200 Rupees

The third-tier enhancement with a substantial defense increase. Requires rare drops from Hinox, Lynel, and boss-tier monsters, plus 200 rupees. Requires three Great Fairies awakened. Cotera as the third fairy is common for players who follow the Kakariko story thread before exploring the Tundra. Tier 3 on the Stealth Armor fully maximizes the stealth movement bonus and adds the sneak-strike damage multiplier, which doubles the damage of all sneak attacks -- a transformative offensive benefit for a set primarily considered defensive.

Example Materials Required

Tier 4

Fourth Upgrade (Max)

500 Rupees

The maximum armor enhancement requiring all four Great Fairies and the rarest materials. Costs 500 rupees per upgrade. The Light Dragon's Scale -- one of the rarest upgrade materials -- is used in several Kakariko-adjacent armor sets including the Gloom-resistant armor worn during Ganondorf encounter sequences. The Light Dragon circles the upper atmosphere of Hyrule on a fixed route and can be ridden after completing the relevant main story sequence. Star Fragments are an alternative rare material for many tier 4 recipes -- farm them by camping on high Sky Island peaks at midnight and listening for the audio cue of a falling star.

Example Materials Required

MaterialQuantity
Silver Lynel Hornx2
Star Fragmentx2
Light Dragon's Scalex1
Dragon Talonx1
Lynel Mace Hornx1

Tips for Cotera

1

Cotera is the most accessible fairy due to Kakariko Village's central location and proximity to early-game quests. Players who follow the main story through Lookout Landing and into Kakariko will reach Cotera naturally before most other fairies.

2

The hill path to the fountain is steep with two sharp switchbacks. Use fans angled slightly forward and downward -- this gives better hill-climbing thrust. Alternatively, attach a rocket booster for the final steep section and let it fire on the incline.

3

Kakariko Village has a shop (arrows, materials), an inn (heart recovery), a dye shop (armor color customization), and the Goddess Statue (Heart Container exchange). Stock up on supplies while visiting Cotera rather than making a separate trip.

4

Cotera was also present in Breath of the Wild, tending the same hilltop location above Kakariko. Veteran players will feel an immediate sense of recognition -- though her flower bud and fountain design have been beautifully updated in Tears of the Kingdom.

5

After unlocking all four Great Fairies, Tier 4 upgrades become available. This is the maximum armor enhancement level and requires the rarest materials in the game -- Dragon parts, Star Fragments, and White-Maned Lynel drops.

6

The Stealth Armor set (purchasable at the Enchanted armor shop in Kakariko Village) is one of the best early-game investments. Upgrading it at Cotera for improved sneaking unlocks the full sneakstrike multiplier at tier 3 -- which effectively doubles your damage when attacking from stealth.

7

Lore note: Cotera is the most beloved of the four Great Fairies among Kakariko's Sheikah population. She is mentioned in several Sheikah manuscripts found in the village as a protector spirit who shielded the hillside from a great fire centuries ago. Impa's family has maintained a tradition of leaving offerings of Sunshrooms at her bud on the first day of each season.

8

A useful routing tip: unlock Cotera on the way from Lookout Landing toward Hateno Village, then continue east to Hateno, then loop back north toward Akkala for the second or third fairy. This covers the southeast map efficiently.
