Max Hearts Guide — How to Get Maximum Hearts in TotK
Max Hearts Guide — Reaching Maximum Health in TotK
The maximum number of hearts in Tears of the Kingdom is 40 hearts — the base 3 from the tutorial plus 37 additional heart containers. Getting there requires finding and completing all 152 Shrines to collect Lights of Blessing and trading them at a Goddess Statue. This guide explains how it works and how to reach max hearts efficiently.
How Hearts Work in TotK
Starting hearts: 3 (after completing the Great Sky Island tutorial)
How to get more:
- Complete Shrines to earn Lights of Blessing
- Collect 4 Lights of Blessing
- Trade them at any Goddess Statue for either:
- +1 Heart Container (+1 maximum heart)
- +1/5 Stamina Vessel (+1/5 of a stamina wheel)
The choice: Every 4 Lights of Blessing is one upgrade — you pick Hearts or Stamina. There are 152 Shrines = 152 Lights of Blessing = 38 upgrades total.
Maximum Hearts — The Numbers
Formula:
- 3 base hearts (tutorial)
- 152 Shrines = 152 Lights of Blessing = 38 upgrade choices
- If ALL 38 upgrades go to hearts: 3 + 38 = 41 hearts — but this exceeds the cap
The actual maximum hearts you can hold: 40 hearts
This means you can get 40 hearts AND still have some stamina upgrades:
- 37 heart upgrades + 1 stamina upgrade = 40 hearts + 1/5 extra wheel
- Or any other combination that totals 38
Maximum stamina (if you take no hearts beyond base 3):
- 38 stamina upgrades × 1/5 wheel each = 7.6 extra wheels
- Total: 2 base wheels + 7.6 = cannot exceed 3 full wheels (the stamina cap is 3 wheels)
- Maximum stamina = 3 full wheels (requires ~25 stamina upgrades)
Practical recommendation: Most players take 30 hearts and upgrade stamina with the remaining 8 choices. This gives 30 hearts + 3 full stamina wheels — the balanced endgame build.
Hearts vs. Stamina — The Choice
See the full breakdown in Hearts vs. Stamina Guide.
Summary:
- Hearts: Essential for survivability. Below 10 hearts, most boss fights are very difficult.
- Stamina: Needed for climbing, paragliding, and horse taming. More than 1 extra wheel is useful.
- Recommended split: 20–30 hearts, then remaining upgrades to stamina
Fastest Path to Max Hearts
Step 1 — Activate All Skyview Towers
Towers unlock map regions and make shrine hunting dramatically easier. Activate all 15 Skyview Towers first.
Skyview Towers (15 total):
- Lookout Landing
- Hyrule Ridge
- Lindor's Brow
- Eldin Canyon
- Ulri Mountain
- Akkala Tech Lab
- Lanayru
- Popla Foothills
- Mount Lanayru
- Gerudo Canyon
- Gerudo Highlands
- Rabella Wetlands
- Rospro Pass
- Pikida Stonegrove
- Typhlo Ruins
Step 2 — Follow Regional Shrine Clusters
Shrines cluster by region. Completing all shrines in one region at a time is more efficient than random exploration.
Regional shrine counts: | Region | Shrines | Notes | |--------|---------|-------| | Hyrule Field / Central | 20 | Highest density, accessible early | | Necluda | 16 | Mixed surface and cave | | Akkala | 12 | Spread across highlands | | Eldin | 10 | Some inside Death Mountain | | Lanayru | 14 | Includes underwater and sky | | Gerudo | 14 | Desert + highlands | | Hebra | 12 | Cold resistance needed | | Faron | 14 | Jungle + sky islands | | Sky Islands | ~16 | Scattered across all regions | | Depths | ~12 | Deeper Depths area shrines |
Step 3 — Use the Shrine Sensor
The Shrine Sensor (Purah Pad app) pulses when you're near an undiscovered Shrine. Activate it and follow the pulses.
Upgrade the sensor: After collecting enough Poe Souls in the Depths and spending them at Bargainer Statues, you can upgrade the Purah Pad to detect specific shrine types.
How to Exchange Lights of Blessing
- Collect 4 Lights of Blessing from Shrines
- Find any Goddess Statue (found in villages, at the Temple of Time on Great Sky Island, and in some caves)
- Interact with the statue → choose Heart Container or Stamina Vessel
- Done — your maximum hearts or stamina increases immediately
Goddess Statue locations:
- Lookout Landing (main one you'll use early)
- Rito Village
- Goron City (inside)
- Zora's Domain
- Gerudo Town
- Kakariko Village
- Hateno Village
- Tarrey Town (after completing)
- Temple of Time (Great Sky Island)
- Various Depths statues (some exchange Poe Souls for upgrades instead)
Heart Containers vs. Lights of Blessing
Some players confuse these terms. In TotK there are no standalone "Heart Containers" dropped by bosses (unlike older Zelda games). Instead:
- Every 4 Lights of Blessing = trade for one heart upgrade
- Boss kills give Sage powers, not hearts
- The ONLY way to increase maximum hearts is through Goddess Statues using Lights of Blessing
