All Talus Variants Guide — Complete Breakdown

Talus are living rock minibosses scattered throughout Hyrule. Each variant has unique environmental resistances, gem drops, and strategies. This guide covers every Talus type — how to identify them, where to find them, and how to kill them efficiently.

Talus Overview

All Talus share a common weakness: the ore node (glowing gem cluster) on their back or body. Destroying the ore node is the primary kill method.

Common kill method (all variants):

  1. Climb onto the Talus's back (jump on when it kneels/swings)
  2. Hit the ore node with melee weapons
  3. Or: Use Shock Arrows on the ore node from a distance to stagger it

Why Talus are worth farming:

  • Gem drops (including Diamonds) are valuable
  • All Talus respawn on Blood Moon
  • A circuit of 5-6 Talus = 600-2,000+ Rupees

Stone Talus

Difficulty: Easy (beginner-appropriate) Environment: Any biome (surface) Ore node location: On the back/top of the body

Description: The standard Talus variant. Gray stone body, single ore node exposed on its back. Common throughout Hyrule's plains, hills, and mountains.

Attacks:

  • Ground slam (AoE ring around it) — jump over the ring
  • Rock throw — dodge sideways
  • Charge: slow, easy to dodge

Kill strategy:

  1. When Talus raises an arm to slam, jump onto its body
  2. Climb to the ore node on its back
  3. Melee the ore node (3-4 two-handed hits = dead)
  4. Or: Shock Arrow to the ore node from range (3-4 hits stagger → ore node exposed)

Gem drops: Opal, Flint, Amber, Ruby (uncommon), Sapphire (rare), Diamond (very rare)

Best locations:

  • Hyrule Field (multiple, easily accessible early game)
  • Central Hyrule plains
  • Lanayru wetlands

Battle Talus

Difficulty: Medium Environment: Any biome (surface) Ore node location: On the back

Description: A Stone Talus variant that carries Bokoblins on its back/platform. The Bokoblins attack you while you're trying to reach the ore node, making combat multi-target.

Unique mechanic: Bokoblins on the Battle Talus platform will attack you with spears, bows, or bombs when you climb up.

Kill strategy:

  1. Use arrow shots from range to clear Bokoblins on the platform first
  2. Or: Bomb Arrow toward the platform to knock Bokoblins off
  3. Once platform is cleared (or if you can tank the Bokoblin attacks): climb up and hit the ore node
  4. Battle Talus sometimes has Moblins with Lynel weapons — kill those first from range

Gem drops: Same as Stone Talus, slightly better rates due to higher difficulty

Where to find: Akkala region, some Lanaryu areas, enemy camps

Igneo Talus

Difficulty: Medium-Hard Environment: Eldin Canyon / Death Mountain area Special mechanic: Body is HOT — touching the body deals constant fire damage

Description: A lava/fire variant Talus found exclusively in the Eldin volcanic region. The body surface is molten hot — you cannot climb on it without fire protection.

Unique challenge: You need either:

  • Flamebreaker Armor (all 3 pieces for full fire resist) or
  • Fireproof Elixir (Level 2, lasts 12 minutes) — OR —
  • Clever approach: hit the ore node from range only (no body contact required)

Kill strategy (fire protection):

  1. With Flamebreaker armor: climb normally, hit the ore node on its back
  2. Fast method: Use Yunobo's Charge — roll him directly at the ore node from range

Kill strategy (no fire protection):

  1. Shock Arrows to the ore node from distance — stagger the Talus
  2. When staggered, Talus kneels — ore node may be more exposed
  3. Continue Shock Arrow hits until ore node is destroyed
  4. NEVER touch the body — even a brief contact deals fire damage

Gem drops: Flint, Amber, Ruby (uncommon), Topaz (uncommon), Sapphire (rare), Diamond (very rare), Bubbulfrog drops (occasionally)

Locations:

  • Eldin Canyon (multiple)
  • Death Mountain base area
  • Near Goron City outskirts

Frost Talus

Difficulty: Medium Environment: Hebra Mountains / snowy regions Special mechanic: Body is freezing cold — touching deals cold damage and can freeze Link

Description: Ice-covered Talus found in cold biomes. The body surface is frozen — contact causes cold/freeze status.

Unique challenge: Cold biome environment requires Cold Resistance food/armor just to operate in the area. Contact with Frost Talus body adds additional freeze risk.

Kill strategy:

  1. Fire Arrows are highly effective — fire counters ice, deals bonus damage to the ore node
  2. Normal climbing with Cold Resist 2 armor: possible but risky (contact damage)
  3. Best method: Shock Arrows or Fire Arrows from range to destroy ore node without climbing

When staggered by fire arrows: The Frost Talus kneels — ore node is exposed for precision shots or quick climb.

Freeze status: If ice breath catches you, buttons rapidly to break free faster.

Gem drops: Flint, Amber, Sapphire (more common than Stone Talus), Ruby (occasional), Diamond (rare)

Locations:

  • Hebra Mountains (multiple)
  • Tabantha Snowfield
  • Some Lanayru highlands areas

Marbled Talus

Difficulty: Hard Environment: Any biome (surface) — relatively rare Special mechanic: Multiple ore nodes, requires destroying all of them

Description: The most powerful and rewarding Talus variant. Marbled Talus has a distinctive marbled/veined appearance and multiple ore nodes on its body — not just one. All nodes must be destroyed to kill it.

Key feature: Marbled Talus has the best gem drop rates in the Talus family. This is the primary farming target for Diamond and Sapphire.

Attacks (more aggressive than Stone Talus):

  • Multi-slam: hits multiple times in sequence
  • Ground pound: larger AoE
  • Rock throw: throws larger rocks at higher speed
  • Body roll: Rolls toward player (dodge sideways)

Kill strategy:

  1. Identify all ore node locations (there are 2-4 visible on the body when it stands upright)
  2. Shock Arrows: hit each node from range, stagger it between hits
  3. Climbing: more dangerous due to aggression, but fastest kill — hit all nodes rapidly while mounted
  4. Priority: destroy the primary node (usually the most exposed) — this deals the most damage

Gem drops (best of all Talus types):

  • Diamond: Higher drop rate than other variants
  • Sapphire: Common
  • Topaz: Common
  • Ruby: Common
  • Opal, Amber, Flint: Always

Locations:

  • Scattered throughout Hyrule — less common than Stone Talus
  • Look for Talus with unusual coloring (darker, marbled pattern vs. plain gray)
  • Some Akkala Highlands, Lanaryu areas, Faron

Rare Talus (Depths Variants)

In the Depths, Stone/Battle Talus appear with identical mechanics but:

  • Gloom environment — standing in Gloom reduces max HP
  • Lower visibility without Brightbloom Seeds
  • Same gem drops but riskier farming conditions
  • Worth farming if you're already in the Depths for other reasons

Talus Farming Circuit — Best Route

For maximum Rupees/hour via Talus kills:

Surface circuit:

  1. Hyrule Field Stone Talus (3-4 in the central plains)
  2. Akkala Talus (2-3 in the highlands) — check for Marbled Talus
  3. Lanaryu / Necluda Talus (2-3 more)
  4. Sell all gems (keep Diamonds, Sapphires, Topaz for armor upgrades unless you have surplus)
  5. Rest at campfire → Blood Moon → repeat

Best weapon for Talus ore nodes:

  • Two-handed weapons deal the most ore node damage per swing
  • Lynel Saber Horn fused to a claymore = most efficient single kill
  • Shock Arrows for ore node stagger before climbing

Talus Gem Drop Summary

| Variant | Diamond Rate | Best Gem Drop | |---------|-------------|--------------| | Stone Talus | Very Low | Opal | | Battle Talus | Low | Ruby | | Igneo Talus | Low | Ruby/Topaz | | Frost Talus | Moderate | Sapphire | | Marbled Talus | High | Diamond |

For diamond farming specifically: Target Marbled Talus exclusively. The drop rate difference vs. Stone Talus is significant.
