Epona
About Epona
Link's iconic companion horse from Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, and Breath of the Wild. Epona can only be obtained in Tears of the Kingdom by scanning a compatible amiibo — specifically the Link (Super Smash Bros), Link (Twilight Princess), or Link (Twilight Princess Rider) amiibo figures. Epona has perfect balanced 4/4/4 stats identical to the Giant White Stallion but with a gentle temperament instead of wild — making her the easiest top-tier horse to ride. She is the only horse in the game with a canonical name, cross-game history, and musical recognition (her iconic song plays when she appears). Her chestnut brown coat with white blaze and white leg markings has been her look across every Zelda game. Epona is the ultimate mount for Zelda series fans.
Where to Find Epona
Detailed Location
Epona spawns wherever you activate the amiibo rune and scan a compatible Link amiibo. She drops from the sky in a burst of light. Compatible amiibo: Super Smash Bros Link (any version), Twilight Princess Link, or Twilight Princess Link (Rider) on horseback. Scan in any open overworld location. After appearing, she stands nearby — ride her immediately to the nearest stable. Important: you can only use amiibo once per real-world calendar day. If Epona does not appear on first scan (some reports suggest it can take multiple attempts on different days), try again the next day. If she appears but you fail to register her before she despawns, you must wait for the next day's scan.
How to Tame Epona
1
Open the amiibo rune from the ability menu (right D-pad item wheel → amiibo icon).
2
Scan a compatible Link amiibo figure or NFC card (Smash Bros Link, Twilight Princess Link, or Link Rider).
3
Epona appears nearby in a shower of light. She has a gentle temperament and requires zero soothing — just mount with A.
4
Immediately ride her to the nearest stable without dismounting. A single accidental dismount before registration risks losing her.
5
Register at the stable for 20 Rupees. Once registered, she is permanently yours and can be retrieved from any stable in Hyrule.
6
If she does not appear on first scan, try again the next real-world day. Amiibo drops are randomized — Epona is not guaranteed every scan.
Unique Traits
•
The only canonically named horse in TotK with cross-game Zelda history.
•
Gentle temperament — no stamina required to tame. She accepts Link with zero bucking.
•
Perfect 4/4/4 stats identical to the Giant White Stallion, but with the handling ease of gentle temperament.
•
Distinctive chestnut brown coat with white blaze (face stripe) and white lower legs — her look from OoT and TP.
•
Plays Epona's Song motif when she appears from the amiibo scan.
•
Can only be obtained via amiibo — she does not spawn naturally in the game world.
•
Gentle temperament makes her the most responsive horse to directional inputs, especially at low bond levels.
Tips & Advice
•
Register Epona at a stable IMMEDIATELY after scanning — do not explore first. A single misstep can cost you until the next amiibo day.
•
Epona is the easiest 4/4/4 horse to obtain if you own compatible amiibo. No hunting, no 2-wheel stamina requirement.
•
Gentle temperament makes steering feel precise and instant — she responds faster than wild-temperament horses at the same bond level.
•
You can customize Epona's saddle and bridle at stables to any unlocked set. Her coat and markings cannot be changed.
•
Third-party NFC cards programmed with Smash Bros Link work identically to official amiibo if you do not own the figure.
•
If you have the amiibo, Epona is superior to the Giant White Stallion for pure riding due to the gentle temperament advantage.
