Great Sky Island

The Great Sky Island is where Link awakens at the start of Tears of the Kingdom, floating thousands of meters above Hyrule in the sky. This self-contained tutorial zone introduces all four of Link's new foundational abilities — Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, and Recall — through a carefully sequenced series of shrine puzzles and open-world challenges. The island is not a single flat surface but a complex multi-tiered environment with distinct micro-climates: temperate forested areas on the lower levels, a snowy peak at the island's summit requiring cold-resistance preparation, cave systems rich with early ore and Zonai capsules, and the ancient Temple of Time at the center of the upper plateau. The Room of Awakening below the temple is where Link first regains consciousness and finds Rauru. After completing all four shrines and receiving the Paraglider, Link descends to Hyrule below — but the Great Sky Island can be revisited at any time via sky travel. It contains several Koroks and additional treasures unreachable without the full ability set. The island's stonework and architecture are pure ancient Zonai in style, covered in glowing green engravings and geometric motifs.

Ukouh Shrine (Ultrahand tutorial)

In-isa Shrine (Fuse tutorial)

Gutanbac Shrine (Ascend tutorial)

Nachoyah Shrine (Recall tutorial)

Dangers

Level 1 cold at the snowy summit section — collect Spicy Peppers before ascending

Falling off island edges (use Paraglider or Recall to survive)

Construct enemies (tutorial difficulty, but they teach combat mechanics)

Low starting health (3 hearts) and limited stamina

Recommended Gear

Archaic armor set (found on the island in treasure chests)

Spicy Peppers (found in the forested area) cooked into warming meals for the cold summit

Zonai devices discovered through shrine puzzles

Tree branches and basic weapons found throughout the island

Exploration Tips

1

Complete all four shrines before descending to gain all abilities. Skipping any shrine means missing a core tool for the whole game.

2

Collect Spicy Peppers from the forested lower area and cook them before ascending to the snowy summit section.

3

The Mining Cave has ore deposits and early Zonai capsule dispensers — worth a full exploration pass.

4

Practice Ultrahand and Fuse extensively here. These abilities underpin the entire rest of the game.

5

You can return to the Great Sky Island at any time after descending — it has Koroks and items locked behind abilities you may not have had on first visit.

6

The forested sections of the island have mushrooms, apples, and wildlife — harvest everything before descending.
