How to Pull the Master Sword from the Light Dragon

The Master Sword in TotK is embedded in the forehead of the Light Dragon — Zelda herself, transformed. Pulling it requires sustained stamina (2+ wheels) and knowing where to find the dragon flying at the highest altitude in Hyrule.

Master Sword Stats

| Stat | Value | |------|-------| | Attack | 30 base (40 near Gloom/Malice) | | Durability | Doesn't break — enters 10-min cooldown when depleted | | Special ability | Anti-Malice: boosted attack against Gloom/Ganondorf enemies | | Fuse support | Yes — can fuse materials, but usually not recommended |

The Master Sword is not the absolute highest attack weapon (fused weapons can exceed 90 attack) but it never permanently breaks, making it uniquely valuable for extended fights.

Stamina Required

Minimum: 2 full stamina wheels (10 stamina vessels = 2 wheels beyond starting) Recommended: 2.5-3 full wheels for comfortable margin

Alternative: Use Endura food to temporarily boost beyond your stamina cap:

  • 5x Endura Carrot cooked → Enduring meal with ~1 full yellow stamina wheel bonus
  • This lets you pull the Master Sword with as little as 1 full stamina wheel if you eat the Endura dish right before

Why stamina: Pulling the sword is a timed hold (hold A for ~15-20 seconds). Stamina drains during the hold. If it runs out before the sword is free, Link lets go — you must try again.

Where to Find the Light Dragon

The Light Dragon circles all of Hyrule at maximum altitude — higher than any Skyview Tower launch, slowly circling the entire map.

Without Dragon's Tears (Early Access)

You don't need to collect Dragon's Tears to find and board the Light Dragon. However, without them:

  • You can still board the dragon and pull the sword
  • The 12th Dragon's Tear on the dragon's head won't trigger without first finding the other 11

Finding it:

  1. Launch from any Skyview Tower
  2. Use Tulin's Gust repeatedly while paragliding to gain maximum altitude
  3. Look for a large white/golden dragon at the very top of the sky
  4. It moves slowly — plan your glide path to intercept it

Best towers for reaching it:

  • Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower (highest launch in the game)
  • Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower (northeast, good altitude)
  • Chain: Tower launch → Gust × 5 → glide into the dragon's path

With All 11 Dragon's Tears

After collecting 11 Geoglyph Dragon's Tears:

  • Impa reveals the 12th tear is on the Light Dragon
  • This gives you a clear waypoint marker for the dragon's location
  • Highly recommended to collect all 12 tears before pulling the sword — viewing the 12th memory requires touching the tear, and the True Ending requires all 12

Step-by-Step Pull Guide

Step 1 — Prepare

  1. Cook 5x Endura Carrot if you have fewer than 2 full stamina wheels
  2. Eat the Endura dish right before grabbing the sword (yellow stamina rings don't persist through menus)

Step 2 — Reach the Light Dragon

  1. Launch from the highest available Skyview Tower
  2. Paraglide and use Tulin's Gust repeatedly
  3. The Light Dragon flies a slow circuit — watch for it and angle toward its path
  4. You should be able to intersect its flight path as it crosses your glide path

Step 3 — Land on the Dragon

  1. Glide directly onto the dragon's back (large, flat scale surface)
  2. Once on the dragon, you can walk around it freely
  3. Navigate forward toward the dragon's head

Step 4 — Collect the 12th Dragon's Tear (Optional)

If you have 11 tears already:

  • The teardrop shape on the dragon's forehead is visible and glowing
  • Walk to it and interact → 12th memory plays
  • Watch the full memory (emotional payoff)

Step 5 — Pull the Sword

  1. Approach the Master Sword embedded in the dragon's forehead
  2. Interact to hold A and begin pulling
  3. Hold A continuously until the sword is pulled
  4. If stamina depletes: release, wait for your stamina to recharge slightly, try again
  5. With Endura Carrot meal active: pull is smooth in one continuous hold

Stamina-saving tip: If you exhaust regular stamina mid-pull, release A, let 1-2 seconds of recovery occur, then hold A again. The progress partially resets but not fully — multiple partial pulls still work.

Step 6 — Retrieve the Sword

Master Sword is now in your inventory as a weapon. Equip it from the weapon menu.

After Getting the Master Sword

Cooldown mechanic:

  • The sword has an energy gauge (shown as a special meter when equipped)
  • Using it depletes the energy
  • When energy hits zero: sword glows white, enters 10-minute cooldown (you can't use it until recharged)
  • Strategy: Use the sword for important fights, switch to backup weapons when it's on cooldown

Best use cases:

  • Boss fights (especially Ganondorf — anti-Malice boost)
  • Phantom Ganon encounters (direct counter to Gloom weapons)
  • Extended difficult fights where you can't afford weapon durability loss

Endura Carrot Locations

For players who need Endura Carrot to pull the sword early:

  • Sold at some horse stables (Woodland Stable, Akkala Stable areas)
  • Found on Sky Islands — growing on elevated platforms
  • The Light Dragon's back has Sundelion plants (not Endura Carrot) — bring the carrots from elsewhere
  • Cook 5x Endura Carrot at any campfire before the pull

True Ending — Dragon's Tears Connection

If you want the True Ending: Collect all 12 Dragon's Tears before fighting Ganondorf (the final boss). The 12th tear is on the Light Dragon's forehead — right next to the Master Sword.

Optimal sequence:

  1. Find and board the Light Dragon
  2. Touch the 12th Dragon's Tear (memory plays)
  3. Pull the Master Sword immediately after
  4. Proceed to fight Ganondorf with both the Master Sword AND all 12 memories
