Best Temple Order Guide — Which Temple to Do First in TotK
Best Temple Order Guide — Optimal Sequence
TotK has 5 temples (Wind, Fire, Water, Lightning, Spirit) that can technically be done in any order. However, the optimal order significantly affects difficulty, gear acquisition, and story flow. This guide recommends the best sequence and explains why.
The 5 Temples at a Glance
| Temple | Sage Unlocked | Key Reward | Difficulty | |--------|--------------|-----------|-----------| | Wind Temple | Tulin | Gust ability | Easiest | | Fire Temple | Yunobo | Rock Roll ability | Medium | | Water Temple | Sidon | Water Barrier ability | Medium | | Lightning Temple | Riju | Lightning Strike ability | Hard | | Spirit Temple (Depths) | Mineru | Construct ability | Hardest |
Recommended Temple Order
1. Wind Temple (FIRST — Always)
Why first:
- Tulin's Gust is the most universally useful sage power in the game
- Gust dramatically improves ALL subsequent exploration
- The Wind Temple is the easiest of the five
- Wind Temple = direct early quest from Rito Village, accessible from game start
What Tulin enables:
- Extended paraglider range (nearly doubles distance)
- Easier Sky Island exploration (needed for all other temples)
- Faster traversal across every region
Boss: Colgera — hit the ice rings on its underside while it circles. Easy with bow.
2. Fire Temple (SECOND — Recommended)
Why second:
- Unlocks Yunobo's Rock Roll — destroys ore nodes, breaks cracked walls
- The Fire Temple's location (Death Mountain) gives access to the best ore mining area
- Completing it unlocks Goron City commerce and side quests
- Flamebreaker Armor is sold in Goron City — essential for Death Mountain and Fire Gleeok fights
Pre-requisites:
- Flamebreaker Armor (buy at Goron City before entering)
- Fireproof Elixirs as backup
Boss: Marbled Gohma — use Yunobo's charge to hit the eye, then dodge the legs
3. Water Temple (THIRD — Recommended)
Why third:
- Sidon's Water Barrier is excellent for subsequent boss fights (especially Lynels)
- The Water Temple is moderately difficult — manageable with Wind + Fire sage abilities
- Completing it unlocks Zora's Domain quests and the Zora Armor set
- Zora Armor (waterfall climbing) opens new exploration routes
Pre-requisites:
- Nothing special — accessible from Lanayru region
- Have arrows for the aerial approach sections
Boss: Mucktorok — expose the small creature on the sludge like's back, attack it
4. Lightning Temple (FOURTH)
Why fourth:
- The most complex temple in terms of puzzle design
- Gerudo Desert requires heat resistance and good gear to navigate safely
- The Gerudo region is harder to access than the first three
- Riju's lightning ability is powerful but less universally needed than Tulin/Sidon
Pre-requisites:
- Desert Voe Armor (heat resistance) — from Gerudo Town secret shop
- Access to Gerudo Town (requires vai disguise puzzle)
Boss: Queen Gibdo — Phase 1 uses Riju's lightning in light beams; Phase 2 dodge lightning
5. Spirit Temple (LAST — Always)
Why last:
- Requires collecting 4 Guidance Stones scattered throughout the Depths first
- Located deep in the Depths — hardest to access
- Mineru is powerful but situational; other sages are more universally useful
- The Spirit Temple completes the questline before the final dungeon
Pre-requisites:
- 4 Guidance Stones (scattered in Depths regions — requires Depths exploration)
- Brightbloom Seeds for Depths navigation
- Sundelion dishes for Gloom protection
Boss: Master Kohga IV — his most complex fight, uses all previous Kohga mechanics
Why Temple Order Matters
Sage ability synergies:
- Tulin's Gust helps reach all other temples more easily
- Sidon's barrier makes Lynel farming safer (better weapons for harder temples)
- Yunobo's charge breaks mine obstacles in cave approaches to some temples
Gear unlock sequence:
- Flamebreaker (Fire Temple area) → needed for Fire Gleeok farming
- Zora Armor (Water Temple area) → waterfall climbing unlocks new areas
- Desert Voe (Lightning Temple area) → desert exploration
Skipping Temple Order (Any%)
For players who want to rush specific content:
Skip to Spirit Temple early: You can technically reach the Depths without other temples, but you'll be severely under-geared. The Spirit Temple requires 4 Guidance Stones which force you to explore the full Depths anyway.
Skip to Lightning Temple early: Possible but hard — you won't have Sidon's barrier or Yunobo's Rock Roll, making the approaches harder.
Standard recommendation: Wind → Fire → Water → Lightning → Spirit.
What Each Temple Unlocks Post-Completion
| Temple | Post-Completion Unlock | |--------|----------------------| | Wind | Rito Village quests, northwest exploration | | Fire | Goron City full access, Eldin mining optimal | | Water | Zora's Domain full quests, Zora Armor | | Lightning | Gerudo Town full access, Thunder Helm quest | | Spirit | Full Depths exploration, pre-final dungeon |
