What to Sell & What to Keep Guide in TotK
What to Sell & What to Keep — Complete Guide
TotK floods you with materials but many are critical for armor upgrades. Selling the wrong thing early is a common mistake that forces grinding later. This guide tells you exactly what to sell freely and what to keep.
SELL FREELY — These Have No Important Uses
Amber (10R each)
Sell all of it. Amber has minimal armor upgrade uses and is the most common gem drop from ore nodes. You'll never run out.
- Exception: Keep 10-20 if you specifically need them for early Great Fairy upgrades (some sets use Amber at 1-star)
Flint (5R each)
Sell all of it. Flint is only useful for starting fires (cook next to it) — but campfires and Zonai flame emitters make flint obsolete. No armor upgrades use flint.
Monster Parts (excess)**
- Bokoblin Horn/Fang: Keep ~20, sell the rest. Used in basic elixirs but you'll get hundreds.
- Moblin Horn/Fang/Guts: Keep ~20 Guts, sell most Horns/Fangs.
- Lizalfos Tail (regular): Keep ~20, sell excess.
Keese Wings
Sell excess — they drop in huge quantities. Keep 10-20 for elixir use.
Chuchu Jelly (all types)
Sell excess — used in some armor upgrades but drop so commonly you'll always have surplus. Keep 20-30 of each color.
Basic Frog/Lizard Body Parts
Sell all — not used in any important recipe in large quantities.
KEEP ALWAYS — Never Sell These
Dragon Parts (All Four Dragons)
- Dinraal's Scale/Claw/Fang/Horn
- Farosh's Scale/Claw/Fang/Horn
- Naydra's Scale/Claw/Fang/Horn
- Light Dragon's parts
Why: Required for 4-star armor upgrades. Extremely rare (one per Blood Moon per dragon). Selling even one is a significant setback.
Star Fragments
Never sell. Required for 4-star armor set upgrades. You get maybe 20-30 total in a full playthrough. Each 4-star upgrade requires 1-3 Star Fragments.
Lynel Parts (All Types)
- Lynel Horn, Hoof, Guts
- Savage Lynel Saber Horn, Bow pieces
- Lynel Guts: 70R sell value but the fuse and upgrade values far exceed this
Why: Lynel Saber Horn = best weapon fuse in game. Lynel Guts = rare elixir ingredient. Never sell unless you have 20+ in inventory already.
SELL SURPLUS — Keep First 10-20, Sell the Rest
Gems
| Gem | Sell Value | Keep for | |-----|-----------|---------| | Opal | 60R | Great Fairy upgrades (some sets) — keep ~30 | | Ruby | 210R | Armor upgrades (Snowquill) — keep ~20 | | Sapphire | 260R | Armor upgrades (various) — keep ~20 | | Topaz | 180R | Armor upgrades (Lightning set) — keep ~20 | | Diamond | 500R | Armor upgrades (4-star various) — keep ALL |
Diamond rule: Never sell. Every Diamond will eventually be needed for a 4-star upgrade. You can earn rupees other ways — Diamonds from ore are rate-limited.
Hinox Parts
- Keep ~10-20 Hinox Guts (good elixir ingredient = long duration)
- Sell excess Toenails and Teeth (lower value)
Talus Drops
- Keep ~20 of each gem type for armor upgrades
- Sell excess Amber, Opal
CONTEXT-DEPENDENT — Check Before Selling
Zonaite / Large Zonaite
- Don't sell Large Zonaite (40R) — convert at Crystal Refinery for Energy Cell upgrades (much more valuable)
- Regular Zonaite: Sell if you've maxed your Energy Cell and have 500+ in inventory
Bubbul Gems
- Don't sell — trade to Kilton/Koltin for rewards including bonus items and armor pieces
Poe (blue flames in Depths)
- Cannot sell — only trade at Bargainer Statues for weapons, Depths items
Ancient Materials (found in Depths ruins)
- Check upgrade requirements before selling — some 4-star upgrades need them
Weapons — Sell vs. Keep
Sell
- Traveler's Sword, Club, and basic enemy weapons below 20 attack
- Any unfused weapon you're about to replace
- Royal Guard weapons with no fuse (low durability, not worth keeping unfused)
Keep
- Fused weapons with Lynel Saber Horn or other S-tier fuses
- Master Sword (never drops anyway)
- Ancient Blade (extremely rare one-shot weapon)
What Merchants Buy
Some merchants buy weapons directly. The sell value is small (Royal weapons sell for ~200-400R) — only sell weapons if you're truly at max inventory.
When to Stop Selling Gems
Once you start doing 2-star and 3-star armor upgrades at Great Fairies, you'll realize gems disappear fast. At that point:
- Stop selling Sapphires (armor needs ~10+ for a full set)
- Stop selling Rubies
- Keep Topaz for Lightning Helm upgrades
- NEVER sell Diamonds
Early game: selling a few gems for rupees is fine. Mid-game: stop selling gems and start stockpiling for armor upgrades.
