Riju Guide — Sage of Lightning

Riju is Chief of the Gerudo and becomes the Sage of Lightning after completing the Lightning Temple. Her ability — Riju's Fury — creates a lightning field that electrifies Link's next arrow, causing a thunder strike on any surface hit near enemies.

Riju's Ability — Riju's Fury

How it works: Activate Riju's presence → she channels a lightning field around Link. When Link fires an arrow (ZR), lightning strikes at or near the arrow's landing point, dealing shock damage in a small area.

Key mechanic: The lightning doesn't have to hit the enemy directly — it triggers on the surface near the impact point. This means:

  • Fire into the ground near enemies = lightning hits them
  • Fire at metal objects near enemies = chained shock
  • Fire near large groups = area of effect lightning

Cooldown: Moderate — the lightning effect lasts for one arrow per activation. After use, re-summon Riju for the next lightning arrow.

How to Get Riju

Prerequisite: Complete the Lightning Temple main quest.

Quest chain:

  1. Reach Gerudo Town (far southwest Hyrule, beyond the Gerudo Desert)
  2. Enter Gerudo Town (requires vai disguise or Gerudo access)
  3. Investigate the strange phenomena in the Gerudo region
  4. Find and activate all Gerudo Statues
  5. Complete the Lightning Temple (in the Gerudo Desert)
  6. Defeat Queen Gibdo (boss)
  7. Riju joins as a sage companion

Best Uses for Riju's Fury

1. Crowd Control — Multiple Enemies

Riju's lightning is area-effect — it hits multiple enemies within shock radius:

  • Enemy clusters: fire at the ground between them → all hit
  • Moblin camps: one arrow with Riju = everyone staggered
  • Flying enemies in groups (Keese swarms) — fire near the flock, lightning arcs

This is where Riju shines over other sages — she affects entire groups, not single targets.

2. Thunder Gleeok Setup

Against Thunder Gleeoks (normally lightning-immune), Riju's lightning still deals damage through the electric-immune phase because her lightning type bypasses the Gleeok's standard immunity window:

  • Fire arrows with Riju's Fury toward the Gleeok's body during Phase 1
  • Lightning strike stuns or interrupts head attacks
  • During Phase 2 (airborne), firing toward the Gleeok with Riju active creates lightning strikes near its body

Note: The Thunder Helm protects you from the Gleeok's own lightning, while Riju's lightning attacks the Gleeok.

3. Metal Enemy Exploit

Metal-wearing enemies (some Bokoblin variants, Guardian Scouts) are vulnerable to chain lightning:

  • Fire near a metal enemy → lightning arcs through metal objects to adjacent enemies
  • Destroys metal weapons in enemy hands (they drop them)
  • Stuns the enemy briefly (follow up with melee)

4. Queen Gibdo Revisit / Gerudo Clearance

For farming purposes, Riju's lightning is particularly effective in the Gerudo Desert:

  • Blue-Maned Lynels in the area
  • Gibdo swarms (lightning is highly effective against Gibdos — they dissolve on shock)
  • Sand Seal harassment (area shock near groups)

5. Lynel Phase — Stagger Assist

Against Lynels (especially White-Maned and Silver variants):

  • While Lynel is moving, fire with Riju's Fury at the ground near it
  • Lightning strike interrupts certain Lynel movement phases
  • Follow up with headshot → mount Lynel for free melee combo

Riju Tips

Tip 1 — Aim at the ground, not the enemy: Riju's lightning triggers on impact point, not the arrow target. Aim at the ground between enemies or just in front of the target, not at the enemy directly. This ensures the lightning area hits the intended target.

Tip 2 — Open areas are best: The lightning strike area works best in open terrain (desert, plains). Enclosed spaces (caves, dungeons) with low ceilings can sometimes clip the lightning. Outdoor fights are ideal.

Tip 3 — Combine with Electric-resist: When using Riju's Fury aggressively in close-quarters fights, nearby lightning can occasionally arc back toward Link. Have Rubber Armor or Thunder Helm active to prevent self-damage.

Tip 4 — Re-summon quickly: Each Riju activation only lasts for one arrow. After firing, immediately re-summon Riju for the next shot. With practice, you can maintain near-continuous lightning arrows in a firing sequence.

Tip 5 — Lightning Temple callback: During the Lightning Temple, Riju's lightning was used to charge specific mechanisms and stun enemies. This same logic applies in the overworld — use her near electrically-interactive objects or constructs.

Riju's Fury vs. Shock Arrows

| Method | Pros | Cons | |--------|------|------| | Riju's Fury | Free (no ammo), AoE, re-triggerable | One shot per activation | | Shock Arrows | No cooldown between shots, precise targeting | Costs arrow materials (Topaz or Electric Darner) |

Best of both: Use Riju's Fury for groups and area clearing. Use Shock Arrows for precision targets (Gleeok head gems) or when Riju's cooldown is active.

Riju vs. Other Sages

| Scenario | Best Sage | |----------|-----------| | Crowd control (groups) | Riju | | Gibdo swarms | Riju | | Thunder Gleeok fights | Riju (plus Thunder Helm) | | Boss fights (tanking) | Sidon | | Exploration / gliding | Tulin | | Mining / fire enemies | Yunobo |

Riju is the premier combat sage for open fights with multiple enemies. Tulin remains better for pure exploration.

Lightning Temple Quick Reference

| Item | Detail | |------|--------| | Temple location | Gerudo Desert underground (beneath the Lightning Monument) | | Boss | Queen Gibdo | | Boss weakness | Phase 1: Use Riju's lightning in the light beams to power them up, then attack the Gibdo cocoons. Phase 2: Avoid lightning, shoot the Gibdo directly | | Boss reward | Riju joins as Sage of Lightning | | Dungeon reward | Vow of Riju — Riju's Fury |
