Thyphlo Ruins Skyview Tower

Akkala
Hard

Hidden within the perpetually dark Thyphlo Ruins in northern Hyrule, just south of the Korok Forest. Map region unlocked: Northern Hyrule including the Korok Forest region, southern Akkala, and the northern Hyrule highlands. This tower is TotK's most atmospheric challenge — the complete magical darkness transforms navigation into a tense, suspense-filled exploration experience unlike any other tower location. The ruins themselves are ancient Zonai-era stone structures half-buried in centuries of accumulated soil and overgrown vegetation. Stone tablets with partial ancient inscriptions are scattered throughout the ruins — many contain incomplete records of Zonai surveys and astronomical observations. The darkness conceals both Gloom-infused enemies and environmental treasures in equal measure. Three shrines located within the ruins are also affected by the darkness and require Brightbloom navigation for discovery. The Thyphlo Ruins connect to the Korok Forest via underground passages — the forest's Lost Woods disorientation effect shares an origin with the same ancient curse darkening the ruins. Above the ruins, the magical darkness does not extend into the sky: once launched from the tower, you emerge into normal daylight and can see the entire Great Hyrule Forest canopy and northern Hyrule clearly.

Activation Puzzle Walkthrough

1

The Obstacle

The Thyphlo Ruins are subject to an ancient magical curse that plunges the entire zone into total, impenetrable darkness — you cannot see more than 1–2 meters in any direction. The darkness is complete even with the Purah Pad active and cannot be countered with normal torches or the Pad flashlight alone. Large stone debris blocks several of the paths leading to the tower at the center of the ruins. Gloom-touched plant life (thorns, vines) creates additional maze-like obstacles. Enemies inside the ruins — Gloom-infused Constructs with glowing red eyes — are partially camouflaged by the darkness.

2

The Solution

Collect a large stock of Brightbloom Seeds before entering (found in caves throughout Hyrule, especially in Lanayru cave networks). Throw seeds ahead of you as you walk — each seed illuminates a 10-meter circle for several minutes. Navigate using your mini-map constantly: the tower icon appears on the mini-map once you are within discovery range, and the icon shows your position relative to the ruins center where the tower stands. The tower is located roughly at the geographic center of the ruins square. Use Ultrahand to drag stone debris blocks away from the path when you encounter them. When you encounter Gloom Constructs (identified by their glowing red eyes in the darkness), engage at range with bow shots aimed at the eyes. The terminal activates immediately on contact once you reach it. Map region unlocked: Northern Hyrule, the Korok Forest region, and the southern Akkala approaches.

Tips

Stock 25–30 Brightbloom Seeds minimum before entering — you will use significantly more than expected when navigating dead ends and enemy detours.

Throw seeds in arcing trajectories well ahead of you to illuminate the path without stepping into unknown darkness blindly — establish a lit corridor before advancing.

Use your mini-map constantly throughout the ruins — the tower icon appears once within discovery range and shows your position relative to the ruins center.

After activating the tower, drop back into the ruins from above (via re-entry from the exterior) to explore in darkness for three hidden shrines and numerous treasure chests with Brightbloom lighting.

Gloom-infused Constructs patrol inside the ruins — their glowing red eyes are visible in the darkness even without seeds. Use bow shots aimed at the eyes for ranged engagement before they close to melee range.

After launching, you exit into full daylight above the ruins — glide north to survey the Great Hyrule Forest canopy and identify Korok Forest entry points.

Ancient stone tablets inside the ruins contain partial Zonai text about the civilization and their surveys of the ruins area — worth reading and photographing for Hyrule Compendium entries.

The ruins boundary is marked by a visible treeline transition — once you step inside the treeline, darkness begins immediately. Note your compass entry direction so you can find the exit if needed.
